What is a composite door?

A composite door is built from several materials bonded together rather than a single one. Most have a tough glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) outer skin with a realistic woodgrain or smooth finish, wrapped around an insulated core and a reinforced frame. The result is a door that looks like painted timber but does not warp, rot or need repainting, and is far better insulated than an old timber or UPVC panel door.

Composite front door styles

• Contemporary: flat or lightly grooved panels, slim vertical glazing strips and long bar handles, often in anthracite grey or black. A good match for modern homes and renovated 1930s semis.
• Traditional: raised or moulded panels, Georgian-style top lights and classic door knockers and letter plates, suited to Victorian and Edwardian terraces across Windsor, Maidenhead and Reading.
• Cottage: vertical boarded or ledge-effect designs with small square glazing, ideal for country cottages in Buckinghamshire, the Surrey Hills and the Kent Weald.

Composite door colours

Front door colour does a lot of work on kerb appeal. The colours we are asked for most are anthracite grey, black, deep green, duck egg blue, red and white, and many composite doors can be finished in one colour outside and white inside so the hallway stays light. If you live in a conservation area, a heritage colour such as a deep green, blue or black often sits more comfortably on the street.

Glass, side panels and top lights

Glazing lets daylight into the hall. You can choose clear, obscure or decorative glass in the door itself, and add matching side panels or a top light to frame the entrance. Glass in or near a door must be safety glass to meet Building Regulations (Approved Document K), so we specify toughened or laminated glazing as standard.

Security and energy efficiency

Our composite front doors are fitted to PAS 24, the British security standard for doorsets, with multi-point locking and anti-snap cylinders. Replacement external doors also have to meet the energy limits in Approved Document L of the Building Regulations, which for a door means a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or better. A well-fitted composite door with good seals also cuts the draughts that make an entrance hall cold.

Composite vs UPVC vs aluminium front doors

• Composite gives the most traditional, solid look and feel, with a thick insulated slab and a wide choice of styles and colours.
• UPVC panel doors are usually the most economical option and suit back doors and utility rooms well.
• Aluminium doors give a sleek, modern entrance with slim frames, and pair well with aluminium windows such as our Reynaers SlimLine 68.

Do I need planning permission for a new front door?

On most houses, replacing a front door with one of similar appearance does not need planning permission. In some conservation areas, Article 4 directions bring front doors under planning control, and listed buildings always need listed building consent.
