Tonbridge grew up where the River Medway could be forded, around an 11th-century motte-and-bailey castle that still anchors the town. Today it is a busy railway junction with lines to London, Ashford, Hastings and Redhill, and its housing reflects every stage of that story, from listed buildings on the High Street to Victorian railway terraces and post-war estates. Inspired Glazing makes and fits aluminium windows, sliding and bifold doors, UPVC windows and composite doors across Tonbridge and the villages around it.

Tonbridge housing, street by street
- The historic centre. Many High Street buildings have 18th-century brick fronts hiding older timber frames from the 16th and 17th centuries. Many are listed.
- Victorian terraces around Douglas Road and Barden Park, built as the railway expanded. Narrow frontages benefit from slim frames that let in as much light as possible.
- Victorian villas in areas such as The Slade and Dry Hill Park, with taller openings and bays.
- Post-war estates north of the centre, where UPVC or aluminium casements and new garden doors are common upgrades.
The Tonbridge Conservation Area
Tonbridge’s conservation area was first designated in 1969 and has been extended several times since. It runs from the River Medway in the south to Yardley Park Road in the north, taking in the castle, the High Street and the riverside. The local building materials are sandstone for the castle, church and school buildings, and local clay brick with tiled roofs for most homes.
The planning authority is Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, please check with the council before choosing new windows or doors. We will happily provide drawings and product details for your discussions.
Living near the Medway
Flooding is part of local history here. Major floods in 1968 led to the Leigh Barrier upstream of the town, and further defences have been built since, though flooding returned in December 2019. If your home is near the river, mention it at the survey. We will look at sill heights, drainage details and door thresholds, and talk through whether a level or low threshold makes sense for your situation.
Villages around Tonbridge
Hildenborough
North-west of the town, in Tonbridge and Malling borough, and one of the parishes that takes in part of the Kent Downs National Landscape. A mix of period cottages and larger 20th-century family homes.
Hadlow
East of Tonbridge in the Medway valley, known for Hadlow Tower, the 153-foot Grade I listed folly added to Hadlow Castle in 1835. The village has a conservation area, and older properties need careful treatment.
Leigh
West of Tonbridge, Leigh is actually in Sevenoaks District rather than Tonbridge and Malling, so planning questions go to Sevenoaks District Council. Many of its 19th-century buildings around the large village green were built by the Baily and Morley families, and the village has its own conservation area.
East Peckham
To the east, in hop country. The oast houses and granaries at the Hop Farm at Beltring are listed, and converted oasts and barns nearby often call for bespoke window shapes and wide glazed doors.

From our workshop to your home
We are based in Fifield, near Windsor, and do not have a Kent office. Tonbridge is around 55 miles away, typically an hour or a little more via the M25 and A21 when traffic is reasonable. After a free survey, your frames are built in our workshop and installed by our own fitters, who remove the old units and tidy up before they leave. Lead time is from 10 days and our guarantee lasts 10 years.

Frequently asked questions
Who handles planning for windows in Tonbridge?
Tonbridge, Hildenborough, Hadlow and East Peckham are covered by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council. Leigh, although close to Tonbridge, falls under Sevenoaks District Council. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, check with the right council before ordering. We can provide drawings and product specifications to support your enquiry or application.
Is my home near the Medway a problem for new doors?
It does not stop you having new doors, but it is worth planning for. Tonbridge has a history of flooding, so at the survey we look at threshold heights, drainage and how the door sits against the ground outside. Tell us if your property has flooded before, and we will discuss the most suitable threshold option.
Can you make windows for a converted oast near East Peckham?
Yes. Because we fabricate our aluminium windows and doors in our own workshop, we can make the bespoke shapes and sizes that oast and barn conversions often need. If the building is listed, Listed Building Consent will be required, so speak to the council early. A survey lets us measure each opening accurately.
Should I choose aluminium or UPVC for a Victorian terrace in Tonbridge?
Both can work. Aluminium gives slimmer frames, more glass and a wide range of colours, which suits narrow Victorian frontages. UPVC is usually the lower-cost option and needs little maintenance. If you are in the conservation area, check with Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council first. We can quote both so you can compare side by side.
How quickly can you fit new windows in Tonbridge?
Our usual lead time is from 10 days, counted from final survey and order to installation. A typical house is fitted over one or more days depending on the number of windows and doors. As we travel from Fifield near Windsor, we plan early starts so the team has a full day on site.
