Double Glazing in Canterbury: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Inspired Glazing provides double glazing in Canterbury, making aluminium windows and doors in its own workshop and fitting them with its own team, alongside UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories. We do not have a Canterbury branch. We work from Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor, which is roughly 90 miles from the city by road and around an hour and fifty minutes via the M25 and M2, so surveys and installations are always arranged in advance around the journey.

A historic city with very varied houses

Canterbury Cathedral, St Augustine’s Abbey and St Martin’s Church together form a World Heritage Site, and the walled centre is full of medieval, timber-framed and Georgian buildings, many of them listed. Most people buying windows, though, live outside the walls. Wincheap, St Dunstan’s, Northgate and the streets off the London Road are largely Victorian terraces. The roads around Old Dover Road and St Augustine’s Road have larger Victorian and Edwardian villas. Beyond them come interwar semis, post-war estates such as Hales Place, and newer development on the edges of the city, including Thanington and Kingsmead.

Canterbury also has a large rented sector serving its universities, and landlords tend to want hard-wearing, low-maintenance frames that are simple to look after between tenancies.

Traffic is the other everyday issue. The ring road follows the line of the city walls, and the A2 and the main routes in from Whitstable, Sturry and Wincheap carry heavy traffic for much of the day. Homes facing those roads benefit from laminated acoustic glass, which we can fit in aluminium or UPVC frames. For houses close to the Great Stour, which runs through the city and the Westgate Gardens, tell us at survey if your ground floor has ever taken on water, so we can discuss door thresholds.

Planning in and around the city

Canterbury City Council is the planning authority. The Canterbury City conservation area covers the historic core and much of its setting, and there are further conservation areas in surrounding villages. Inside the walls, assume consent will be needed until you hear otherwise: listed buildings need listed building consent, and flats have no householder permitted development rights. South of the city, villages such as Bridge and Chartham sit within the Kent Downs National Landscape. Check with Canterbury City Council before ordering anything for an older or protected property, and see our planning guide for replacement windows.

Choosing products for Canterbury properties

Period terraces and villas

The Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium window, an outward-opening casement, gives slim sightlines that sit well in Victorian and Edwardian openings. We also make Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows. Where original windows must stay, secondary glazing is an option. We do not make timber windows or doors.

Semis, estates and rental homes

UPVC windows and doors in the Selecta Advance 70 system are a robust, low-upkeep choice, and a composite door adds security at the front.

Extending towards the garden

Bifold doors from Smart Visofold or Cortizo, Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns all suit family homes with space at the back.

Villages and suburbs we cover

We work throughout Canterbury and in Sturry, Harbledown, Bridge, Chartham, Blean and Littlebourne. On the coast, see double glazing in Whitstable and Herne Bay; to the south-west, Ashford. The Kent windows and doors hub has the full list.

What happens after you get in touch

We arrange a free survey on a day we are already working in east Kent. The surveyor measures every opening, checks the brickwork and reveals, and talks you through glass, colour and handles, plus any planning questions to raise with the council. A written quote follows; aluminium windows start from Β£400, and our cost guide explains how size, style and glazing affect price.

When you go ahead, aluminium frames are fabricated in Fifield with lead times from 10 days. Our own fitters drive down with the whole order, take out the old frames, install and seal the new ones and leave the rooms tidy. Where a job takes more than a day, we book consecutive days so the work is finished in one run. Every installation carries a 10-year guarantee, and we are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner with Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a Canterbury office or showroom?

No. Our workshop and office are at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor, and that is our only base. Canterbury is roughly 90 miles away by road, around an hour and fifty minutes' drive, so our own team travels from Fifield and plans surveys and installations in advance.

Can I replace windows in a house inside Canterbury's city walls?

It depends on the building. The historic centre is in the Canterbury City conservation area and many buildings are listed, which means consent is likely. Flats have no permitted development rights. Speak to Canterbury City Council before ordering; we can provide drawings and product details for any application.

What windows suit a Victorian terrace in Wincheap or St Dunstan's?

Slim aluminium casements such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 keep the proportions of a Victorian front, while woodgrain-finish UPVC offers a more traditional look at lower cost. If the street is in a conservation area, check with Canterbury City Council whether there are restrictions on style or materials.

Do you work with landlords of student houses in Canterbury?

Yes. Many landlords choose UPVC windows and composite doors for durability and low maintenance between tenancies. We can survey while tenants are in, quote clearly per property and plan fitting around term dates where possible, so disruption to occupants is kept to a minimum.

Are Bridge and Chartham covered, and are there extra rules there?

Yes, we cover both. They lie within the Kent Downs National Landscape, and some properties are in conservation areas or listed. Ordinary replacement windows on an unlisted house often fall within permitted development, but check with Canterbury City Council for your address before committing.
