A fast-growing town with an old core
Bicester is two very different places at once. The historic centre, around Market Square, Sheep Street, Church Street, the Causeway and Kings End, has been a conservation area since 1969 and holds over a hundred listed buildings. Around it, growth in the twentieth century came largely from RAF Bicester and the large ordnance depot, which brought post-war housing to the edges of the town.
The newest layers are bigger still. Kingsmere in the south-west has been built in two phases of more than 1,500 and around 700 homes, Elmsbrook to the north-west welcomed its first eco-town residents in May 2016, and Graven Hill on former Ministry of Defence land was planned as a self-build neighbourhood. Bicester gained Garden Town status in 2014, with thousands more homes planned.
That mix shapes what people ask us for. Owners in recent homes rarely need new windows yet, but often want wider garden doors or a garden room. Owners of post-war semis and 1980s and 1990s houses tend to be replacing first-generation double glazing that has steamed up or stiffened.
The newer neighbourhoods have their own quirks. Elmsbrook homes were built to high environmental standards, with features such as solar panels, rainwater harvesting and district heating, so any change to doors or glazing there should keep that performance in mind. Graven Hill self-builders often come to us at the design stage, wanting large sliding doors or a slim aluminium window style for a house they are still planning. We are happy to quote from drawings and then confirm sizes on site once the openings are built.
What we fit in Bicester homes
- Aluminium casements: our main window is the Reynaers SlimLine 68, an outward-opening casement with slim sightlines. We also make Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows.
- UPVC: UPVC windows and doors in the Selecta Advance 70 system, a sensible choice for estate houses on a budget.
- Front doors: composite doors in a wide range of colours and styles.
- Garden openings: bifold doors from Smart Visofold or Cortizo, and Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors for wide panes of glass.
- Extra space: conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns.
We also supply secondary glazing, garage doors, fascias, soffits and guttering, blinds and shutters. We do not make timber windows; for a timber look we offer woodgrain-finish UPVC or aluminium, or a composite door.
Planning in Bicester and Cherwell
Cherwell District Council is the planning authority for Bicester. As well as the town centre, Cherwell has designated RAF Bicester as a conservation area, along with the Oxford Canal where it runs through the district. If your house is listed, inside a conservation area or on a development with conditions on its appearance, check with Cherwell District Council before ordering. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so window changes there can need consent and the freeholder’s agreement. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows sets out the general rules.
Local government is also changing. Local government in Oxfordshire is being reorganised, so check which council handles planning at the time you apply. Until then, Cherwell handles planning.
Neighbourhoods and villages we cover
Alongside the town and Langford Village we travel to Chesterton, Caversfield, Stratton Audley, Kirtlington and Arncott. Nearby pages cover double glazing in Kidlington, Oxford and Brackley.

Frequently asked questions
How far do you travel to reach Bicester?
Our only base is our workshop at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor. Bicester is roughly 45 miles away by road, usually around 55 minutes up the M40, so our surveyors and fitters drive from Fifield for each visit. We book survey and installation dates with you in advance.
Can I replace windows in the Bicester conservation area?
Often yes, but the rules depend on your property. The town centre has been a conservation area since 1969, and listed buildings always need listed building consent for window changes. Check with Cherwell District Council before you order, and we will help you choose a design that has the best chance of approval.
My Kingsmere house is fairly new. Is there anything worth upgrading?
Windows on newer homes are usually fine for years, so most Kingsmere and Elmsbrook enquiries we see are about doors and space: wider bifold or sliding doors to the garden, a composite front door, or a roof lantern over an extension. Check any planning conditions on your development before changing the outside of the house.
What does an aluminium window cost in Bicester?
Aluminium windows start from £400 each. The final price depends on size, opening style, glass specification, colour and how many windows you replace together. Travel from Fifield does not change our pricing approach. A free survey gives you a written quote, and our double glazing cost guide explains what drives the figure.
How long does it take from survey to fitting?
Once you have approved the quote and final measurements, our aluminium frames are made in our Fifield workshop with lead times from 10 days. We then agree a fitting date. A few windows usually take a day; a full house or a set of garden doors can take longer, and we plan the days in advance.
