Double Glazing in Amersham: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Double glazing in Amersham means dealing with two quite different towns. We fit aluminium, UPVC and composite windows and doors across both the Old Town in the Misbourne valley and Amersham-on-the-Hill above it. Everything is fabricated at our own workshop in Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 18 miles away by road and usually around 35 to 40 minutes’ drive via the M40, and fitted by our own installers.

Old Town and the town on the hill

The Old Town has more than 150 listed buildings and keeps much of its seventeenth and eighteenth-century look. Behind many frontages sit older timber-framed houses with flint and local brick, re-fronted as fashions changed. Up the hill is a different story. Amersham-on-the-Hill began after the Metropolitan Railway arrived in 1892, grew slowly until mains water came in 1915, and then filled out with Arts and Crafts houses by the architect John Harold Kennard, the 1920 Elm Close homes, and the 1930s parades and houses that gave the area its Metro-land character. Later decades added detached family homes and cul-de-sacs towards Chesham Bois and Little Chalfont.

Conservation areas and the Chilterns

Much of the Old Town lies within the Amersham Old Town Conservation Area, and Chesham Bois, just north of the hill, has its own conservation area too. Planning in both is handled by Buckinghamshire Council. If your house is listed or inside a boundary, check with Buckinghamshire Council before choosing a product; window style, glazing bars and colour on the street-facing side are the usual points of discussion. The countryside around the town falls within the Chilterns National Landscape, which can affect larger projects such as extensions and orangeries. Our planning permission guide covers the basics.

What Amersham owners usually ask us

On the hill, a sensible upgrade is to replace tired 1980s and 1990s UPVC with slimmer frames that look more at home on a 1930s elevation. In the Old Town, it is more often a single rear door, a garden room or secondary glazing behind windows that must stay. Larger detached houses towards the edge of town tend to want wide glass to the garden. Each of those calls for a different product and a different conversation with the council, so we start every survey by understanding the house before talking about frames. If you already know you want to keep the street side unchanged and update the back, tell us early, because that can simplify both planning and price.

Matching products to Amersham houses

Metro-land and Arts and Crafts homes

Many 1920s and 1930s houses on the hill originally had slim steel or leaded casements. Our Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium windows are an outward-opening casement with narrow sightlines, which keeps the proportions close to those originals. Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows give further options on profile and opening style.

Detached family houses

For larger homes facing the garden, Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors handle big glass panels well. If you want the opening to fold right back, we fit Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors.

Value-led replacements

UPVC windows and doors on the Selecta Advance 70 system suit later houses where budget matters most, and woodgrain finishes are available. For entrances, composite doors are robust and low-maintenance. We do not make timber windows or doors.

Beyond windows we also install conservatories and orangeries, roof lanterns, porches, secondary glazing, garage doors and rooflines.

From survey to fitting

  1. Survey: we visit, measure every opening and talk through styles, colours and any conservation questions.

  3. Fabrication: aluminium frames are made in Fifield, with lead times from 10 days.
  4. Installation: our own team drives over from Fifield to fit, clean up and hand over, with a 10-year guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a showroom near Amersham?

No. Our only premises are the workshop at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor. Amersham is roughly 18 miles away by road, usually around 35 to 40 minutes' drive, and our surveyors and fitters travel from there. We bring samples and colour swatches to the survey so you can see the products in your own home.

Which windows suit a 1930s Metro-land house in Amersham?

Many of these houses had slim steel or leaded casements originally. Reynaers SlimLine 68 is an outward-opening aluminium casement with narrow frames, so it keeps similar proportions while improving insulation and security. Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows are alternatives. We can also add glazing bars where you want to echo the original pattern.

Is my Amersham Old Town house in a conservation area?

Much of the Old Town sits within the Amersham Old Town Conservation Area, and the town has more than 150 listed buildings. Check with Buckinghamshire Council to confirm whether your address is affected and what consent you need. We are happy to supply drawings and product information to support your application.

How long will I wait for new aluminium windows in Amersham?

Because we fabricate aluminium windows in our own Fifield workshop, lead times start from around 10 days after the survey is confirmed. Larger orders, special colours or projects needing planning consent can take longer. Once your frames are ready, we agree an installation date that suits you and our team drives over from Fifield.

Can you fit a conservatory or orangery in the Chilterns around Amersham?

Yes, we install conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns. Much of the countryside around Amersham is within the Chilterns National Landscape, and that can affect whether an extension needs permission. Check with Buckinghamshire Council at the planning stage. We can provide the design details the council is likely to ask for.
