Weybridge, house by house

Weybridge’s character comes from a long run of development. Oatlands village, east of the centre, was largely built between the 1820s and 1850s on the old Oatlands Palace deer park. The railway arrived in 1838, and the west side of the High Street filled in during the 1880s and 1890s when the Portmore Park estate was broken up. From 1911, W. G. Tarrant laid out St George’s Hill with one-acre minimum plots, producing the large Arts and Crafts-influenced detached houses the estate is known for. Council housing followed in the 1920s, and Weybridge and Walton built more than a thousand homes after the Second World War.

Today the two town wards are dominated by flats, while St George’s Hill is mainly detached. Requests here are wide-ranging: whole-house aluminium replacements on big detached homes, slim casements for Victorian villas, and like-for-like replacements in purpose-built blocks.

Conservation and planning

Elmbridge Borough Council handles planning in Weybridge. There are two conservation areas in the town itself, Weybridge (Town Centre), around the historic core and the Grade II* listed St James’s Church, and Weybridge (Monument Green), centred on the greens at the north end of the High Street. Templemere, Brooklands and the Wey Navigation are also conservation areas in or near the town. If your home is within one, is listed, or is a flat, check with Elmbridge Borough Council before changing windows or doors. Elmbridge will join the new East Surrey Council on 1 April 2027. Our planning guide covers the general position.

St George’s Hill is a private estate with its own covenants, so owners there may also need consent from the residents’ association. We are happy to provide drawings and specifications.

Where the Wey meets the Thames

The Wey joins the Thames just north of the town centre, and the lower-lying roads towards the rivers and Desborough Island sit only a few metres above the water. Powder-coated aluminium copes well with damp riverside air, and door thresholds deserve extra thought on lower plots. Check the Environment Agency flood map for your address if you are unsure.

What we would suggest for Weybridge homes

Large detached houses

Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium windows, an outward-opening casement with slim sightlines, suit the many-paned elevations of Arts and Crafts and 1930s houses. For the garden side, Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors handle very large glass panels, or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors open a whole wall.

Victorian and Edwardian villas

Slim aluminium casements, or Cortizo and Alunet systems, keep proportions close to the original. Where planners or covenants insist on keeping existing windows, secondary glazing is a practical alternative.

Flats and post-war houses

UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system are efficient and economical, and a composite front door adds security.

We do not make timber windows. Woodgrain UPVC, aluminium and composite doors are our timber-look options. Extensions are well suited to orangeries, conservatories and roof lanterns.

Costs

Aluminium windows start from £400, lead times start from 10 days, and each installation carries a 10-year guarantee. Big sliding doors and bespoke colours take longer. See our double glazing cost guide for what drives the final figure.

Survey and installation

We travel from Fifield for the survey, measure everything ourselves and talk through options on site. After you approve the quote, the frames are built in our workshop and installed by our own fitters, who protect floors, remove old frames and leave the house tidy.

We also work in Oatlands, St George’s Hill, Brooklands, Byfleet and New Haw. Nearby pages include Walton-on-Thames, Addlestone and Cobham, plus our Surrey windows and doors page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need consent to change windows on St George's Hill?

Possibly from two places. Planning rules come from Elmbridge Borough Council, which joins East Surrey Council in April 2027. The estate also has private covenants, so the residents' association may need to approve visible changes. We can supply drawings, colour samples and product specifications to support both.

Are aluminium windows suitable for a Weybridge conservation area?

They can be, but it depends on the building and the council's view. In the Town Centre and Monument Green conservation areas, check with Elmbridge Borough Council before changing materials or style. Slim aluminium casements are sometimes acceptable on later buildings, while listed buildings usually need a specialist approach.

What is the largest sliding door you can fit?

Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 is built for large glass panels and suits wide openings to the garden on Weybridge's bigger houses. The practical size depends on your opening, the steel or lintel above, access for delivery and glass weight. The surveyor will measure and advise on the best panel arrangement.

How long does it take you to reach Weybridge?

Our workshop is at Fifield, near Windsor. Weybridge is roughly 17 miles away by road, usually 30 to 35 minutes via the M25. The surveyor and installers come from Fifield for each visit, and we plan fitting days to make the most of each journey.

Can you replace windows in a Weybridge flat?

Yes, with the right consents. Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, so check with Elmbridge Borough Council whether planning permission is needed. You will usually need written consent from the freeholder or managing agent too. Once those are in place, we survey, make and fit as normal.
