Slough’s housing, area by area
Slough grew fast in the twentieth century. The council notes that the Slough Trading Estate began in the 1920s and drew workers from across the country, and that after the Second World War housing estates in Britwell and Langley were built to rehouse Londoners who had lost their homes in the bombing. That history shapes what we see on surveys.
Britwell, Langley and the post-war estates
According to Slough Borough Council, Britwell was built on farmland after the war, and its first tenants moved in in 1956. Post-war houses like these usually have plain, regular openings that suit straightforward replacements: UPVC casements for value, or slim aluminium if you want more glass and less frame. If you own a former council house, check the title for any covenants about the outside appearance before you order.
Cippenham, Upton and Wexham
These areas mix semi-detached and terraced family houses from several decades, many with bay windows, side doors and rear extensions. Older homes may have uneven openings, so every window is measured individually rather than assumed to be a standard size. A bay is the job where a careful survey matters most, because the corner posts often carry load. For rear extensions, an aluminium bifold or a large sliding patio door opens the house to the garden.
Chalvey, the town centre and new flats
Central Slough has many flats, from converted Victorian houses to new blocks. Flats raise two issues that houses do not, which are covered in the planning section below.
Colnbrook, Langley and the Burnham border

Planning, flats and conservation areas in Slough
Planning in Slough is handled by Slough Borough Council, a unitary authority. For most houses, replacing windows and doors with ones of a similar appearance falls under permitted development, as the Planning Portal explains. There are three main exceptions.
- Flats and maisonettes. Householder permitted development rights apply to a “dwellinghouse”, and the General Permitted Development Order states that this does not include a building containing flats or a flat within one. If you are a leaseholder, the Planning Portal adds that you may also need permission from your landlord or management company, so check your lease and speak to the freeholder before ordering.
- Conservation areas. Slough Borough Council lists five conservation areas: Colnbrook, St Bernard’s School, St Mary’s Church (Langley), Sussex Place/Clifton Road, and Upton Park/Upton Village.
- Listed buildings. These need listed building consent for significant works, inside or out.
We want to be upfront about the conservation areas. The council’s Upton character survey and its Sussex Place/Clifton Road appraisal prefer painted timber and describe UPVC and aluminium as inappropriate substitutes. The Sussex Place appraisal also states that replacement windows and doors for flats there will need planning permission. We do not make timber windows. If your home is in one of these areas, talk to the council’s planning team before you choose anything. Aircraft noise around Colnbrook and Langley
Heathrow runs its own noise insulation offer, called Quieter Neighbourhood Support. Heathrow says its Residential Insulation Scheme offers “up to 100% funding of eligible insulation costs where they are recommended by a free independent survey”. Its postcode checker page lists eligible works, including replacement primary windows or secondary glazing and external doors, funded on a like-for-like basis. Conservatories, garages and out-buildings are excluded. Colnbrook was one of the areas in Heathrow’s 2013 Quieter Homes pilot. Use Heathrow’s postcode checker to confirm whether your address qualifies today.
If your home isn’t covered, or you want to go further, we can fit sound-reducing windows with acoustic laminated glass and different pane thicknesses. Secondary glazing on the inside of existing windows is another option, and it suits flats where the outside can’t change. Ask us whether triple glazing is available in your chosen system and sizes.
