If you are pricing double glazing in Hastings, Inspired Glazing can survey, make and fit aluminium windows and doors, UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories for homes across the town and St Leonards. We should be clear from the start: we are based at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor, and that is our only workshop and office. Hastings is roughly 90 miles away by road, around two hours via the M25 and A21, so every survey and installation here is booked in advance and planned around the journey.

Sea air, steep streets and old buildings
Few towns in the South East ask as much of a window as Hastings does. Homes along the seafront and up the hills take salt-laden wind straight off the Channel, and the Old Town is squeezed into a narrow valley between the East and West Hills. That combination punishes poor seals, cheap hardware and frames fitted out of square. Powder-coated aluminium and well-made UPVC both cope with coastal exposure far better than tired single glazing, but the fitting and the sealing around the reveal decide whether a window stays dry in a south-westerly gale.
What the housing looks like
The town is several towns stacked together. The Old Town keeps medieval and Georgian houses, some timber-framed and weatherboarded, along streets like All Saints Street and the High Street. St Leonards was laid out from 1828 by James Burton as a planned resort, so its western end has stuccoed Regency terraces and villas. Victorian expansion after the railway filled the hills with tall terraces and big bay-fronted houses, many since split into flats. Further out, Ore, Hollington and Silverhill add interwar semis, post-war estates and later infill.
Conservation areas and Article 4 in Hastings
Hastings Borough Council handles planning for the town and has designated a number of conservation areas, including the Old Town and areas of St Leonards such as St Leonards West. The council also has Article 4 directions dating from 1993 that apply to parts of the town, and these can bring changes to windows and doors under planning control. Listed buildings always need listed building consent. Because so much of the Victorian stock is now flats, remember that flats have no householder permitted development rights, so replacement windows may need permission and the freeholder’s consent. Check with Hastings Borough Council before ordering; our guide to planning and replacement windows explains the general picture. Fairlight and Westfield sit in Rother district, so check with Rother District Council there.
Matching products to Hastings homes
- Victorian and Edwardian bays. The Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium window, an outward-opening casement, keeps slim sightlines in tall bay openings. We also make Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows in our workshop.
- Converted flats and post-war houses. UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system are a cost-effective upgrade, subject to freeholder agreement for flats.
- Exposed front doors. A composite door handles weather well and gives a timber look without the upkeep. We do not make timber windows or doors.
- Sea and garden views. Where a rear wall faces a view, Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds or Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors open it up.
- More space. We also build conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns, and fit secondary glazing where primary windows must stay.
Where we work around Hastings
As well as Hastings and St Leonards-on-Sea, we cover Ore, Hollington and Silverhill, and travel out to Fairlight and Westfield. Along the coast we also have pages for double glazing in Bexhill-on-Sea and Eastbourne, and inland for Hailsham. Our Sussex windows and doors page covers the wider county.
How a job works at this distance
Because of the two-hour drive, we group Hastings surveys onto days when we are already in East Sussex. The surveyor measures each opening, checks the condition of the reveals and sills, and talks through glass, colours and handles. You then get a written quote; aluminium windows start from Β£400, and our double glazing cost guide shows what changes the figure. Aluminium frames are fabricated in Fifield with lead times from 10 days. On installation days our own fitters travel down early with the full order, so the house is not left open while parts are fetched. Larger jobs run over consecutive days.
Our work carries a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and hold Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have a showroom in Hastings?
No. Our only premises are the workshop and office at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor. Hastings is roughly 90 miles away by road, around two hours' drive, so our own team travels down for surveys and fitting, and we plan those visits in advance around the journey.
Will I need permission to replace windows in St Leonards or the Old Town?
Possibly. Both have conservation areas, and Hastings Borough Council has Article 4 directions covering parts of the town, which can bring window changes under planning control. Listed buildings need listed building consent, and flats have no permitted development rights. Check with Hastings Borough Council before you order.
Which window material copes best with the salt air on the seafront?
Powder-coated aluminium and good-quality UPVC both resist coastal weather far better than old single-glazed frames. Aluminium gives slimmer frames for big Victorian bays; UPVC is usually the lower-cost option. In either case, careful sealing around the opening matters as much as the frame itself on an exposed elevation.
Can you replace windows in a converted flat in Hastings?
Yes, but flats have no householder permitted development rights, so you may need planning permission, and your lease will usually require the freeholder's written consent. If the building is in a conservation area, check with Hastings Borough Council too. We can provide drawings and specifications to support both requests.
How long does it take from survey to installation?
After the survey and your go-ahead, aluminium windows are made in our Fifield workshop with lead times from 10 days. Because Hastings is around two hours away, we then book the installation for a day or run of days that suits both you and our travel plan.
