Double Glazing in St Albans: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Choosing double glazing in St Albans means thinking about the age of your house as much as the product. We build our aluminium windows and doors at our own Fifield workshop, near Windsor, and our own installers fit them. We also supply UPVC windows and doors, composite front doors, conservatories and secondary glazing, which is often the answer for the oldest buildings in the city.

Twenty centuries of building in one city

St Albans began as Verulamium, the second-largest town in Roman Britain, and grew up again around the abbey, which became a cathedral in 1877. The medieval and Georgian streets near the Clock Tower, Fishpool Street and Holywell Hill hold some of the oldest houses we are ever asked to quote for.

The railway reached the city in 1858, and the population jumped by more than a third between 1891 and 1901. That boom left Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas in neighbourhoods such as Fleetville, Bernards Heath and the streets around Clarence Park. Boundary extensions in 1913 and 1935 brought in more land, and after the Second World War the city expanded quickly as families moved out of London, with neighbourhoods such as Marshalswick, which extends into Sandridge parish, filling with family homes in the decades that followed.

Conservation areas and Article 4 directions

St Albans City and District Council is the planning authority, and there are 19 conservation areas across the district. The St Albans Conservation Area itself is large and divided into numbered character areas, running from Verulamium to Gombards and the Spencer Park Estate. The council has also made Article 4 directions on two areas within central St Albans, removing some permitted development rights so that external changes need planning permission.

In practice, if you live in central St Albans, check with St Albans City and District Council before you replace windows or doors. The council publishes guidance on repairing or replacing doors and windows, and its mapping service shows whether your address is affected. Our own planning permission guide explains the general rules. Flats, including the many conversions in larger Victorian houses, have no householder permitted development rights.

What suits a St Albans home

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Outside the Article 4 areas, Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium windows are a popular way to replace tired frames with something slim and durable. They open outwards like a casement. We do not make timber or sash windows, so where the council expects timber, secondary glazing may be the better route.

Post-war family houses

For Marshalswick and similar areas, UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system offer good value, and Cortizo or Alunet aluminium suits owners after a cleaner look.

Kitchen extensions and gardens

Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors give large panes and narrow sightlines, while Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors fold right back. We also build conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns.

Front doors

Composite doors in a range of colours and woodgrain finishes suit both Edwardian and modern frontages.

Survey, manufacture and fitting from Fifield

St Albans is about 24 miles from our workshop in a straight line and roughly 33 miles by road, usually around 45 minutes via the M25. We have no office or showroom in the city; our team travels from Fifield. At the survey we measure every opening, look at the condition of brickwork and sills, and check access for larger doors. Aluminium frames are made in our workshop with lead times from 10 days, then fitted by our own installers with a 10-year guarantee. Aluminium windows start from £400, and our double glazing cost guide covers the rest.

Parking and access in the older parts of the city can be tight, particularly in the narrow streets around Fishpool Street and the centre. Before installation day we agree where the van will go and how the frames will be carried in, so there are no surprises for you or your neighbours, and larger sliding or bifold door panels can be planned around the route through the house.

Nearby villages and towns

Alongside the city we cover London Colney, Sandridge, Redbourn, Wheathampstead, Bricket Wood and Park Street. See also our pages for Harpenden, Hatfield and Hemel Hempstead.

Frequently asked questions

Does an Article 4 direction affect my windows in St Albans?

Possibly. St Albans City and District Council has Article 4 directions on two areas within central St Albans, which means some external changes, potentially including windows and doors, need planning permission. Use the council's mapping service or contact its planning team to check your address before ordering. We are happy to quote to whatever the council approves.

Can you double glaze a listed building near the cathedral?

Listed buildings need listed building consent for most changes to windows, and replacement double glazing is often not approved. We do not make timber windows, so for these homes secondary glazing is usually the realistic option, fitted inside without altering the original frames. Check with St Albans City and District Council first.

What windows suit a Fleetville Victorian terrace?

If the house is outside the Article 4 areas, Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium windows are a good choice, with slim frames that suit narrow terrace openings. UPVC on the Selecta Advance 70 system is the lower-cost alternative. We bring samples to the survey so you can compare colours and frame sizes against your brickwork.

Do you have a showroom in St Albans?

No. Our only premises are the workshop at Coningsby Farm, Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 33 miles from St Albans by road. We bring frame samples, colours and hardware to your home at the survey, and the same team that measures carries out the installation, so you deal with one company from start to finish.

How much are aluminium windows in St Albans?

Our aluminium windows start from £400 each. The total depends on window size, opening style, glass, colour and how many you replace together. Doors and larger openings are priced individually. After a free survey we give you a written quote, and our cost guide explains what changes the price.
