Double Glazing in Crowborough: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Looking for double glazing in Crowborough? Inspired Glazing makes aluminium windows and doors in its own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, and fits them with its own team, alongside UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories. We are not a Crowborough firm and we do not pretend to be: the town is roughly 65 miles from us by road, usually around an hour and a half via the M25, and we plan each survey and installation day around that journey so the fitters arrive with everything they need.

A hilltop town with a lot of weather

Crowborough sits at the top of the High Weald, and its beacon is the highest point of the High Weald National Landscape. Houses here face more wind and driving rain than homes in the valleys below, and many back on to the heath and woodland of Ashdown Forest. That makes the quality of the seals, the frame and the fit matter more than the colour chart. A window that rattles in a westerly on Beacon Road is a window that was fitted badly, whatever it is made of.

The town grew in a hurry after the railway arrived in 1868, when it was promoted as a healthy hill resort and estate agents nicknamed it “Scotland in Sussex”. The legacy is a scatter of large Victorian and Edwardian villas on generous plots, often with tall sash or casement openings and deep bays. Around them sit later layers: interwar and post-war houses, 1960s and 1970s estates, and newer developments on the edges of the town. Jarvis Brook, down by the station, has its own older terraced streets.

Planning in Crowborough

Planning in Crowborough is handled by Wealden District Council. The town has a small conservation area at Crowborough Cross, around the listed Cross Hotel, and surrounding villages such as Rotherfield and Mayfield have their own historic cores. If your home is listed, inside a conservation area or a flat, check with Wealden before you commit; flats do not have householder permitted development rights, so replacement windows may need consent and the freeholder’s agreement. Our planning guide for replacement windows explains when permission usually comes into it.

Villages around Crowborough we cover

Alongside the town itself we travel to Jarvis Brook, St Johns and Steel Cross, and out to Rotherfield, Groombridge and Hartfield. Further south we also have pages for double glazing in Uckfield and Hailsham, and our Sussex windows and doors page covers the wider county.

How a Crowborough job runs from Fifield

  1. Survey. We book a free survey on a day we are already heading into East Sussex, measure every opening, and talk through glass, colour and hardware.
  2. Quote. You get a written quote. Aluminium windows start from Β£400, and our double glazing cost guide explains what moves the price.
  3. Making. Aluminium frames are fabricated in our Fifield workshop, with lead times from 10 days.
  4. Fitting. Our own fitters travel down, remove the old frames, install and seal the new ones and leave the place tidy. Larger jobs are planned over consecutive days so we are not making the trip twice for nothing.

Everything we fit carries a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and hold Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have an office or showroom in Crowborough?

No. Our only premises are our workshop and office at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor. Crowborough is roughly 65 miles away by road, around an hour and a half's drive, so our team travels from Fifield for surveys and installations, which we plan in advance around the journey.

Which windows cope best with Crowborough's exposed hilltop position?

Any well-made, well-fitted double glazing will cope, but exposure shows up poor installation quickly. Aluminium frames such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 are rigid and weather-tight, and UPVC in the Selecta Advance 70 system performs well too. The fit, the seals and the cavity closers matter as much as the frame material.

Will I need planning permission for new windows in Crowborough?

For most houses, like-for-like replacement windows fall under permitted development. Listed buildings, homes in the Crowborough conservation area and flats are different, and flats have no householder permitted development rights at all. Check with Wealden District Council before ordering, and we can help you prepare the details they ask for.

Can you make windows that look like the originals on an Edwardian house?

We do not make timber windows. For Edwardian villas we usually suggest slim aluminium casements, which keep narrow sightlines, or woodgrain-finish UPVC if you prefer a traditional look. We can match glazing bar layouts and colours, and we will talk through the options honestly at the survey.

How long does a Crowborough installation take from survey to fitting?

Our aluminium windows are made in our Fifield workshop with lead times from 10 days after the final survey and order. Because Crowborough is some distance from us, we then book the installation as a planned block of days, so the whole job is usually finished in one visit rather than several trips.
