From Regency resort to suburban sprawl

Worthing began to grow as a seaside resort in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and its centre still has Regency and early Victorian terraces and crescents, Park Crescent and the houses around Steyne Gardens among them. The old villages of Broadwater, West Tarring, Heene, Goring and Salvington were absorbed as the town spread. Most of today’s housing came later: Victorian and Edwardian terraces close to the centre, a great deal of inter-war building in Goring-by-Sea, and post-war estates and bungalows in Durrington, Salvington and Findon Valley, climbing towards the South Downs.

Those hillside streets in High Salvington and Findon Valley look out over the Downs, and owners there often want larger glass to make the most of the view. Findon village itself lies inside the South Downs National Park, so planning decisions there are made by the South Downs National Park Authority rather than the borough council.

Twenty-seven conservation areas

Worthing Borough Council, which works jointly with Adur as Adur & Worthing Councils, has designated 27 conservation areas. They range from Marine Parade and Hinterland, Steyne Gardens, Park Crescent and South Street in the centre to Broadwater Green, West Tarring, Goring Hall, Salvington and Durrington further out; Castle Goring and Highdown fall inside the South Downs National Park. The council has also served Article 4 directions in some conservation areas, removing normal permitted development rights for alterations to houses.

So in Worthing it is especially worth checking before you order: check with Adur & Worthing Councils whether your address is in a conservation area or covered by an Article 4 direction. Our planning guide for replacement windows sets out the general rules, and seafront flats need freeholder consent and have no householder permitted development rights.

Products for each part of town

Goring and Durrington semis and bungalows. UPVC windows on Selecta Advance 70 are the economical choice for a full house, and woodgrain finishes suit inter-war houses that once had timber casements. A composite front door often goes in at the same time.

Victorian and Edwardian houses. Our aluminium windows, including the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement and the Cortizo and Alunet ranges, offer slim profiles and heritage colours. We do not make timber windows; where originals must be retained, secondary glazing is an option.

Garden openings and extensions. Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors for wide glass, Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors for full-width openings, and conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns for extra room.

Near the front, salt-laden wind is part of life. Rot-proof frames help, and rinsing salt from frames and hardware a few times a year keeps them in good order.

Frequently asked questions

Do Article 4 directions affect windows in Worthing?

They can. Worthing has 27 conservation areas, and the council has served Article 4 directions in some of them, removing normal permitted development rights for alterations to houses, which can include windows and doors. Check with Adur & Worthing Councils whether your address is covered before ordering, and our surveyor can provide drawings for any application.

What windows suit an inter-war house in Goring?

Many Goring houses were built in the 1920s and 1930s with timber casements. Woodgrain-finish UPVC on the Selecta Advance 70 system recreates that look affordably, while aluminium in a heritage colour gives slimmer frames. Some homes in Goring are in the Goring or Goring Hall conservation areas, so check with the council first.

How long does it take you to reach Worthing?

Worthing is roughly 65 miles from our Fifield workshop by road, usually around an hour and a half via the M25 and A24, depending on traffic. We have no local branch, so the surveyor and installation team both travel from Fifield, and visits are booked in advance so the job runs to plan.

Can you replace windows in a Worthing seafront flat?

Yes, once approvals are in place. Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, and much of the seafront is within the Marine Parade and Hinterland conservation area, so planning permission may be needed. Your freeholder or management company will also usually need to consent. We can supply specifications to support both.

Do you fit conservatories in Worthing?

Yes. We build conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns, as well as replacing tired conservatory roofs and doors. Whether you need planning permission depends on size, position and whether your home is in a conservation area or covered by an Article 4 direction. Check with Adur & Worthing Councils, and we will explain options at survey.
