For double glazing in Rickmansworth, Inspired Glazing offers aluminium windows and doors made in our own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, together with UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories. We survey, manufacture and fit with our own people, so there is no hand-off between a salesperson, a factory and a subcontracted installer. Rickmansworth is a straightforward drive for us, and below we explain how the town’s mix of riverside, Metro-land and conservation area homes shapes the right choice.

Rivers, a canal and Metro-land

Rickmansworth sits where the Colne, the Chess and the Gade meet, with the Grand Union Canal running along the south of the town and a string of flooded gravel pits around the Aquadrome, Batchworth Lake and Bury Lake. Houses near the water and the lakes often have views worth framing, and big sliding doors or wide windows are a common request.

The town grew in two main bursts. The Victorian period brought terraces such as those on Talbot Road, Norfolk Road and Ebury Road, generally in yellow stock or red brick with slate roofs. Then, in the 1920s and 1930s, the Metropolitan Railway made Rickmansworth part of Metro-land, and commuter suburbs spread out towards Croxley Green, Chorleywood and Moor Park. Those inter-war houses, often with mock Tudor detailing and render, make up a large part of the local housing.

Station Road shows the change in miniature: historic buildings near the High Street give way to modern flats close to the station, which is itself a locally valued Metro-land building. If you own one of those flats, replacing windows or balcony doors normally goes through the management company, and the design usually has to match the rest of the block, so it is worth getting their requirements in writing before we survey.

The Rickmansworth conservation area

The town centre has been a conservation area since 1974, and Three Rivers District Council, which is based in the town, has recently consulted on an updated appraisal and management plan. The appraisal describes Church Street and The Bury as the most historic part, with many listed buildings, and the High Street as a mainly nineteenth-century shopping street. It notes that timber sash windows are traditional, that many have already been replaced with uPVC on streets such as Bury Lane and Ebury Road, and that Talbot Road and Norfolk Road still keep many original timber windows.

An Article 4 direction has applied to part of the town centre since September 2023, aimed at changes of use rather than windows. Even so, if your home is in the conservation area or listed, check with Three Rivers District Council before replacing windows. The appraisal treats sympathetic traditional windows as an improvement, and we do not make timber windows, so where timber sashes are expected we will tell you plainly. Our planning guide explains the general position, and flats have no householder permitted development rights.

What we fit on Rickmansworth homes

Metro-land semis and detached houses

Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium windows are an outward-opening casement with a slim frame that sits well in inter-war bays. UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system are a good-value alternative, including woodgrain finishes.

Waterside and garden elevations

Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors make the most of a view across the garden or the water. If you prefer the whole opening clear, we fit Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors.

Front doors and extensions

Composite doors for Victorian and inter-war frontages, plus conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need permission to replace windows in the Rickmansworth conservation area?

It depends on the building. Listed buildings and flats always need extra consent, and the council expects changes in the conservation area to respect its character. The town centre Article 4 direction covers changes of use rather than windows, but check with Three Rivers District Council before ordering if your home is inside the boundary.

Can you replace timber sash windows on Talbot Road or Norfolk Road?

We do not make timber windows or sash windows, so if the council wants original timber sashes kept or copied, we are not the right firm and will say so. Where a modern replacement is acceptable, we can offer slim aluminium casements or UPVC. Secondary glazing is another way to improve comfort without changing the original windows.

What doors suit a house overlooking the lakes or canal?

Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 aluminium sliding doors are popular for views because the panels are large and the frames slim. Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors suit gardens where you want the whole width open. We measure the opening at the survey and check whether any structural work is needed before quoting.

How far do you travel to Rickmansworth?

Our only base is the workshop at Fifield, near Windsor. Rickmansworth is roughly 22 miles by road, usually around 35 to 40 minutes via the M25. The same team surveys and fits, so the people who measure your windows are the ones who install them. There is no local showroom, but we bring samples.

How much does double glazing cost in Rickmansworth?

Prices for our aluminium windows start at £400. The total depends on size, opening style, glass, colour and the number of windows. UPVC is usually the lower-cost option. A free survey gives you a written quote for your home, and our double glazing cost guide explains the main factors that affect the price.
