Double Glazing in Totton: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Inspired Glazing fits double glazing in Totton: aluminium windows and doors fabricated in our own workshop, UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories, installed by our own team rather than subcontractors. We are based at Fifield, near Windsor, and that is our only premises. Totton is roughly 65 miles from Fifield by road, normally about an hour and a quarter via the M3 and M27, so we arrange surveys and fitting days in advance and the team travels down from Fifield.

The village that became a town

Totton liked to call itself the largest village in England until it became a town in 1974, and its housing still reflects how it grew. Several separate settlements, among them old Totton, Testwood, Calmore and Hammonds Green, were joined together by new housing, and the built-up area expanded a great deal in the later twentieth century. Today it runs almost unbroken towards Ower, Netley Marsh and Ashurst. In practice that means most Totton homes are estate houses, semis and bungalows from the 1960s onwards, with a scattering of older cottages and Victorian houses along the original village roads.

On the waterside, Eling has a different character entirely. Its tide mill, one of only two still working in the UK, stands by the toll bridge where the causeway crosses the old mill pond, with older cottages and the church close by.

Conservation areas and the National Park edge

Totton is planned by New Forest District Council, which lists both Eling and Hanger Farm and Hazel Farm among its conservation areas. The western fringes of the town also run up to the New Forest National Park, and inside the Park boundary, as in Ashurst, the New Forest National Park Authority deals with planning instead. If your home is listed, inside a conservation area, inside the National Park or a flat, check with the relevant authority before you order. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so new windows normally need consent and your freeholder’s agreement. See our planning guide for replacement windows for the general rules.

Low-lying ground near the Test estuary and around Eling is also worth thinking about if you are adding a conservatory or a ground-floor extension; the Environment Agency’s flood map shows whether your address is affected.

What suits a Totton home

1960s to 1990s estate houses

Most of our Totton enquiries are for replacing first-generation double glazing. UPVC windows built on the Selecta Advance 70 system are the economical choice, in white, colours or woodgrain. If you prefer slimmer frames, our aluminium windows include the Reynaers SlimLine 68, an outward-opening casement, plus Cortizo and Alunet systems.

Bungalows

Bungalows often gain most from the back of the house: replacing a tired patio door with Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, adding Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds, or building a conservatory, orangery or roof lantern for extra light.

Older cottages in Eling and on the village roads

We do not make timber windows or doors. For cottages where timber is original, we compare slim aluminium casements and woodgrain-finish UPVC and help you work out what the council will accept. A composite front door gives a traditional look without the upkeep of timber.

Neighbourhoods and villages we cover

As well as central Totton, we work in Eling, Calmore, Testwood and Hammonds Green, and out to Netley Marsh, Ower and Ashurst. We also have pages for Southampton, Romsey and Lymington.

The process, step by step

  1. A free survey at your home, booked on a day we are working in the Southampton area. We measure every opening and talk through styles, glass and colours.
  2. A clear written quote. Aluminium windows start from Β£400, and our guide to double glazing costs explains what affects price.
  3. Fabrication of aluminium frames in our Fifield workshop, with lead times from 10 days.
  4. Installation by our own fitters, who remove the old frames, fit and seal the new ones and leave the house tidy. Bigger jobs are scheduled over consecutive days.

All installations carry our 10-year guarantee. Inspired Glazing is a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner with Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Who handles planning for windows in Totton?

New Forest District Council handles planning for Totton, including the Eling and Hanger Farm and Hazel Farm conservation areas. Homes inside the New Forest National Park boundary, such as in Ashurst, come under the New Forest National Park Authority instead. Check with the right authority if your home is listed, in a conservation area or a flat.

How far away are you from Totton?

Our only base is our workshop and office at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor. Totton is roughly 65 miles away by road, usually around an hour and a quarter's drive. Our own surveyors and fitters travel from Fifield, and we plan Totton surveys and installations in advance so the job runs to time.

Is it worth replacing 1980s double glazing in my Totton house?

Often, yes. Older units tend to suffer from failed seals, misted glass, worn hinges and draughts. Modern UPVC in the Selecta Advance 70 system or aluminium such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 will improve comfort and security. We assess the existing frames at the free survey and give an honest view before quoting.

Can you fit bifold doors on a bungalow?

Yes. Bifolds from Smart Visofold or Cortizo, or Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, are a popular way to open a bungalow living room or kitchen to the garden. A wider opening may need a new lintel or steel beam, which we identify at survey. We can also add a conservatory or roof lantern.

Do you offer timber windows for cottages in Eling?

No, we do not make timber windows or doors. For cottages we offer slim aluminium casements, woodgrain-finish UPVC and composite doors with a traditional look. Eling is a conservation area, so check with New Forest District Council what they will accept before ordering, and we can supply product details for your enquiry.
