Double Glazing on Hayling Island: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Inspired Glazing installs double glazing on Hayling Island: aluminium windows and doors fabricated in our own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, along with UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories, fitted by our own team. The island is more than 50 miles from us in a straight line and roughly 65 miles by road, usually around an hour and a half before the last stretch over Langstone Bridge. We do not have a base on the island, so every survey and installation is planned well in advance around that journey.

One bridge in, and plenty of weather

Hayling has a single road link to the mainland, the bridge from Langstone to Northney. In summer the run from the bridge to South Hayling can take anywhere from half an hour to an hour, so we time arrivals to avoid the worst of it and bring everything we need in one trip. Once across, homes face open water on every side: the Solent to the south, Langstone Harbour to the west and Chichester Harbour to the east. Wind-driven rain and salt are part of daily life, and in October 2013 a tornado damaged more than a hundred properties on the island.

Much of the island is low-lying, and the beach at Eastoke has been built up with dredged shingle to reduce erosion and flood risk. That makes the quality of the seals, drainage and fixing on new windows and doors more important here than in most places we work.

Hayling homes and what suits them

Hayling is largely residential, with Mengham its largest settlement and South Hayling the most populated area. Much of the housing is twentieth-century: bungalows and chalet-style homes, interwar and post-war houses, and later estates and seafront flats. Older cottages survive around West Town, Stoke and Northney.

On any coastal home, rinse frames, hinges and sliding tracks with fresh water now and then to keep salt from building up.

Planning on the island

Hayling Island is part of Havant Borough, so Havant Borough Council handles planning. Some of the borough’s conservation areas cover small groups of historic buildings rather than whole streets, including at North Hayling. If your home is listed, in a conservation area or a flat, check with Havant Borough Council before ordering. Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, so replacement windows can need permission and the freeholder’s agreement. Our guide to planning and replacement windows covers the basics.

Where we go on Hayling

We cover the whole island: Northney and Stoke in the north, West Town and Sinah to the south-west, Mengham and Eastoke in the south-east, and Sandy Point at the tip. On the mainland, see our pages on double glazing in Havant, Portsmouth and Chichester.

Survey to installation

Your free survey is booked on a day we are already working around the harbours. We measure every opening, check how exposed each elevation is and talk through glass, colours and handles. You receive a written quote; aluminium windows start from Β£400, and our double glazing cost guide explains what drives the price. Aluminium frames are fabricated in Fifield, with lead times from 10 days, and our own fitters usually complete over consecutive days so the bridge traffic only has to be faced once. Every installation carries a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner with Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Will you really travel to Hayling Island from Windsor?

Yes. Our workshop is at Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 65 miles from Hayling by road, usually around an hour and a half plus the bridge. Because of the distance we plan surveys and installations in advance, avoid peak summer traffic where we can and bring every frame and fixing in one trip.

What windows are best for a low-lying home in Eastoke?

Homes near the beach at Eastoke face salt, wind and driven rain, so good seals, drainage and fixings matter most. Aluminium windows such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 and UPVC in the Selecta Advance 70 system both cope well. Rinsing frames and hinges with fresh water occasionally helps prevent salt build-up.

Do I need planning permission for new windows on Hayling Island?

For most houses, like-for-like replacement windows are usually permitted development, but listed buildings, conservation areas and flats are different. Flats have no householder permitted development rights. Hayling is in Havant Borough, so check with Havant Borough Council about your address before ordering anything.

Can you fit sliding doors on a Hayling bungalow facing the sea?

Yes. Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors suit sea-facing rear walls because the large panes keep the view open. We check the opening, the structure above it and the exposure at survey. Rinse the tracks with fresh water from time to time so salt and sand do not affect how smoothly they run.

How soon can you install aluminium windows on Hayling?

Our aluminium windows are fabricated in our own Fifield workshop, with lead times from 10 days after order. For Hayling we then book fitting days that work around travel and bridge traffic, usually over consecutive days. We give you a realistic date with your quote rather than an optimistic one.
