Stone, wool and a market town’s layers
Cirencester sits on the lower dip slope of the Cotswold Hills, on oolitic limestone, and its building stone shows it. The medieval wool merchants left fine Cotswold stone houses that still stand in and around Coxwell Street and Dollar Street, and the Grade I listed church of St John the Baptist dominates the Market Place. Cotswold District Council even publishes technical guidance on Cotswold stone slate roofing, a sign of how much of the town’s character depends on traditional materials.
Beyond the centre the town divides into recognisable parts: Stratton, Chesterton, Watermoor and The Beeches, with Bowling Green and New Mills too, and Siddington now almost joined to Watermoor in the south. Victorian streets, twentieth-century estates and newer development sit around the historic core, so the right window depends very much on which street you are on.
The Arts and Crafts movement left its mark nearby too: Sapperton, a few miles west, was one of its main centres. Where a house has small-paned or leaded windows, we talk through whether glazing bars or a simpler pattern will look right, and hold frame colour samples up against the stone so you can see how each one reads before deciding.
Conservation areas and the planning authority
Planning in Cirencester is handled by Cotswold District Council, with Cirencester Town Council as the local parish-level council. The district council has published conservation area appraisals for Cirencester town centre, Cirencester Park and Cirencester South, If your home is listed, in one of these conservation areas, or a flat, check with Cotswold District Council before ordering replacement windows or doors. Flats do not benefit from householder permitted development rights. Our page on planning permission for replacement windows covers the common questions.
Our products for Cirencester houses
- Stone cottages and townhouses outside the protected streets: aluminium windows such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68, an outward-opening casement with slim frames that sits neatly in stone reveals. Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows widen the choice.
- Twentieth-century and newer houses: UPVC windows and doors in the Selecta Advance 70 system, including woodgrain finishes.
- Front doors: composite doors for a painted-timber look without the upkeep. We do not make timber windows or doors.
- Garden openings: Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors.
- Extra space and finishing: conservatories, orangeries, porches, roof lanterns, secondary glazing, and fascias, soffits and guttering.
For listed buildings, where the original windows usually have to stay, secondary glazing fitted inside can be the more realistic way to cut draughts, subject to the council’s view.

What to expect from survey to fit
We start with a free survey at your home. We measure every opening, look at the stone or brick reveals, discuss glass and colour, and point out anything that may need the council’s approval. Because the drive is longer, we try to gather everything on one visit so you are not waiting on a second appointment.
Your written quote follows. Aluminium windows start from £400, and our guide to double glazing costs explains what makes prices rise or fall. Once you order, aluminium frames are made in Fifield with lead times from 10 days, then our own fitters travel up, install and leave the house tidy. If you would rather spread the cost, we can quote the whole house and fit in phases, keeping the same colour and sightlines throughout. The work is covered by a 10-year guarantee, and we are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner with Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions
Can I fit double glazing in a listed Cirencester house?
Usually not without listed building consent, and in many cases the council will expect original windows to be repaired rather than replaced. Check with Cotswold District Council first. Secondary glazing fitted on the inside is often the more acceptable way to improve comfort, and we can survey and quote for it.
Do you have a showroom in the Cotswolds?
No. Our only premises are the workshop and office at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 70 miles from Cirencester by road. Our surveyor brings frame samples, colour charts and hardware to your home, so you can see how each option looks against your own stone or brickwork.
Which window suits a Cotswold stone cottage?
Where replacement is allowed, slim aluminium casements such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 tend to sit well in stone openings because the frames are narrow and the sashes open outward like traditional casements. We do not make timber windows. We will advise at survey whether planning consent is likely to be needed first.
How much do aluminium windows cost in Cirencester?
Our aluminium windows start from £400 per window. The final price depends on size, opening style, glass and colour, and on how many windows are fitted at once. Travel to Cirencester is built into the quote. Our double glazing cost guide explains the main factors before you book a survey.
Do you cover the villages around Cirencester?
Yes. We work in Siddington, South Cerney, Kemble, Bagendon, North Cerney and other villages near the town. Many of these have their own conservation areas, so we always suggest checking with Cotswold District Council before ordering, and we will flag any concerns at survey.
