We install double glazing in Lambeth across the whole borough, from riverside Vauxhall and Kennington down through Brixton and Clapham to Streatham and West Norwood. Inspired Glazing builds aluminium windows and doors in its own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, and its own installers fit them. We also offer UPVC windows, composite doors, secondary glazing and conservatories. There is no Lambeth branch; we come from Fifield, roughly 28 miles by road and usually an hour or a little more each way, and plan dates around that.

How Lambeth was built
North Lambeth was largely marshland until Westminster Bridge opened in 1750 and roads such as Kennington Road brought ribbon development of houses and shops. The council describes Kennington’s conservation area as smart terraced housing built from the late 18th century onwards, and its Duchy of Cornwall Estate as laid out in the 1910s to a very high standard.
From the mid-19th century the railways pushed the suburbs south. Brixton’s stations drew lower-middle-class workers from the City and West End, and Norwood grew from about 600 to 6,000 people in fifty years. Clapham and Streatham were part of Wandsworth until 1965, when they joined Lambeth; by 1930 Streatham was a busy suburb. After the Second World War, slum clearance and public housing programmes replaced many large Victorian houses, so today Victorian and Edwardian terraces, converted flats and council estates sit side by side.
Lambeth planning: what to check first
Lambeth Council publishes profiles for more than 60 conservation areas, from Abbeville Road to Westow Hill, including Brixton, Kennington, Vauxhall, Clapham Park, Rush Common and Brixton Hill, and South Bank. Nine of them have Article 4 directions that remove some permitted development rights for external alterations: Albert Square, Hyde Farm, Lansdowne Gardens, Leigham Court Estate, Park Hall Road, St Marks, Stockwell Park, Streatham Lodge and Vauxhall.
If you live in a flat, remember that flats have no householder permitted development rights. If you own a converted flat in a Victorian house, the freeholder may also need to approve new windows. Check with Lambeth Council, and your freeholder if you have one, before you order. Our planning permission guide has more detail.
Good fits for Lambeth homes
- Kennington’s older terraces: where original windows are protected, our secondary glazing is fitted behind them. We do not make timber windows or doors.
- Brixton and Streatham terraces: outside protected areas, our UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system, with woodgrain finishes, are a lower-cost choice, and a composite front door completes the front.
- Conversions, mews and modern builds: slim aluminium windows, led by the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement, plus Cortizo and Alunet.
- Rear extensions and gardens: Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds, roof lanterns and conservatories.
Replace, or keep and add secondary glazing?
In Lambeth the honest answer often depends on what the council will accept. Where a terrace is in a conservation area with an Article 4 direction, keeping the original windows and adding secondary glazing behind them can be the simplest route, because the outside of the house is unchanged. Where full replacement is acceptable, new double-glazed units in a modern frame usually give the bigger improvement. We will show you both at survey and let you decide.
We also fit porches, garage doors, fascias, soffits and guttering, and supply blinds and shutters.
Covering the whole borough
We work in Waterloo, Vauxhall, Kennington, Stockwell, Brixton, Herne Hill, Clapham, Streatham, Tulse Hill and West Norwood. Our neighbouring borough pages are Wandsworth, Southwark and Croydon.
Survey, quote and fit
Our surveyor visits from Fifield, measures each window and door, checks access and parking, and brings samples so you can choose colours and handles at home. Your written quote follows. Aluminium windows start from £400, and the double glazing cost guide explains the main variables. Aluminium frames are fabricated in Fifield, with lead times from 10 days once you have ordered and any consents are confirmed. Our own fitters install, seal and remove the old frames.
Every installation includes a 10-year guarantee. Inspired Glazing is a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and holds Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions
Which Lambeth conservation areas have Article 4 directions?
Lambeth Council lists nine: Albert Square, Hyde Farm, Lansdowne Gardens, Leigham Court Estate, Park Hall Road, St Marks, Stockwell Park, Streatham Lodge and Vauxhall. Each removes some permitted development rights for external alterations, so changing windows or doors may need planning permission. Check the direction for your street with the council.
Can I replace windows in my converted flat in Brixton?
Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so replacement windows will usually need planning permission from Lambeth Council. If the building has a freeholder, you will normally need their consent as well. We can survey the flat and provide a written specification to help with both applications before you order.
Do you fit windows on the Duchy of Cornwall estate in Kennington?
We can survey and quote, but check first. The Duchy of Cornwall Estate lies within the Kennington conservation area, and the council describes it as laid out to a very high standard of design. Talk to Lambeth Council, and your landlord or freeholder if relevant, before choosing any replacement windows or doors.
How far is Lambeth from your workshop?
Our only base is our workshop at Fifield, near Windsor. Lambeth is roughly 28 miles away by road, usually an hour or a little more each way depending on traffic. We bring samples to your home for the survey and book fitting days in advance, starting early to make the most of the day.
What is the cheapest way to double glaze a Streatham terrace?
UPVC windows are usually the most economical option. Ours use the Selecta Advance 70 system and are available in woodgrain finishes as well as plain colours. If the house is in a conservation area such as Streatham Lodge, which has an Article 4 direction, check with Lambeth Council first. A free survey gives you a fixed written price.
