Old Tadley and the AWRE years

Tadley’s story is unusual. Before the 1950s, the main village was no bigger than today’s conservation area around Old Tadley, a string of 17th and 18th-century cottages along lanes that branched off the main road onto heath and common land. The arrival of the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment (now AWE) between 1950 and 1952 changed everything. The site itself is in Aldermaston parish, but most of the housing built for its workers in the 1950s and 1960s went up in Tadley, pushing the town northwards.

So the typical Tadley home is a post-war house or bungalow, often now on its second set of windows, while the older lanes keep timber-framed cottages with brick infill, thatched or clay-tiled roofs and small casement windows. Newer closes have filled in around both, and Tadley Town Council, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Hampshire County Council each look after different parts of local government.

Tadley’s conservation areas

There are two. The Tadley Conservation Area, designated in 1981, covers Old Tadley along the A340 from Honey Mill Bridge to Vine Tree Farm, including Malthouse Lane and meadows towards Pamber Forest. The Church Road Conservation Area, designated in 1982, takes in St Peter’s Church and a group of farmhouses. The council’s appraisal notes that casement windows predominate in Old Tadley, with sashes mainly on larger houses.

Planning here is handled by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council. If your home is in either conservation area, is listed or is a flat, check with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council before ordering. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, and leaseholders usually need the freeholder’s consent too. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows explains the usual steps.

Choosing the right product

Post-war houses and bungalows. For most Tadley homes, UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system are a practical replacement, in white, colours or woodgrain.

Homes wanting slimmer frames. Our aluminium windows centre on the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement, with Cortizo and Alunet alternatives. Slim casements can suit cottage-style openings, but in a conservation area ask the council first.

Old Tadley cottages. We do not make timber windows or doors. If a listed cottage needs timber, we will say so; otherwise woodgrain finishes and a composite front door give a traditional look.

Gardens backing onto heath and woodland. Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors bring the view in. We also build conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns, and fit secondary glazing, fascias and guttering.

From first call to finished job

Each job carries our 10-year guarantee, and we are a Constructionline Silver contractor and a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner.

Lanes, hedges and forest edges

The council’s appraisal describes Old Tadley’s narrow lanes, thick hawthorn, hazel and holly hedges and brick-walled plots, a legacy of cottages built by encroachment onto common land and of local trades such as coppicing and besom broom-making. Pamber Forest lies to the east, and the Ron Ward’s Meadow with Tadley Pastures SSSI is on the edge of town. For window work, narrow lanes and mature hedges can make access tight, so at survey we check where the van can park and how large glass units will reach the house.

Villages we cover around Tadley

We also work in Baughurst, Pamber Heath, Heath End, Silchester, Aldermaston, Mortimer Common and Bramley. For neighbouring towns see Thatcham, Newbury and Fleet.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tadley in your area even though it is in Hampshire?

Yes. Tadley is roughly 30 miles from our Fifield workshop by road, usually around 45 minutes via the M4 and A340. County boundaries make no difference to us. Our own surveyor and fitters travel out from Fifield for every visit.

I live in Old Tadley. Can I replace my cottage windows?

Old Tadley is within the Tadley Conservation Area, and several cottages there are listed. Listed buildings always need consent for window changes, and the council may expect timber. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is the planning authority, so check with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council before ordering. We do not make timber windows.

What suits a 1950s or 1960s Tadley house?

Many Tadley homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s for AWRE workers. UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system are a cost-effective replacement that keeps the look of the street, while aluminium casements such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 give slimmer frames. We price both options at survey so you can compare.

How much do new windows cost in Tadley?

Our aluminium windows start from £400 per window. The total depends on sizes, opening styles, glass, colour and the number of windows and doors. We give a fixed written quote after a free survey, and our double glazing cost guide explains what affects the price of a whole-house job.

Do you fit conservatories and porches in Tadley?

Yes. As well as windows and doors, we build conservatories, orangeries and porches, and fit roof lanterns, secondary glazing, fascias, soffits and guttering. We survey the space, advise on whether planning permission or building regulations approval is likely to be needed, and handle the build with our own team.
