Old town, railway suburb, hillside villas
Godalming is an old market town on the River Wey, and its centre still has the timber-framed and brick-fronted buildings of a medieval and Georgian high street, with the Pepperpot at its heart. Victorian growth followed the railway: Farncombe in particular has rows of terraced and semi-detached houses from that era. On the higher ground, around Charterhouse school and towards Busbridge, are larger late-Victorian and Edwardian houses in generous plots, and the twentieth century filled in the gaps with semis, bungalows and small estates such as those around Binscombe and Aaron’s Hill.
The Wey and its Lammas Lands meadows give the town a green centre, but they also flood. If you are adding a garden door or a conservatory on a low-lying plot by the river, it is sensible to discuss thresholds and drainage at survey stage.
Godalming also has a place in engineering history: in 1881 it became one of the first towns in the world with a public electricity supply. Today the more practical concern for many households is traffic noise. Homes close to the A3 around Milford, or on the busier roads through the town, can ask at survey about glass specifications and secondary glazing to reduce the sound coming through the windows.
Conservation areas and the Surrey changes
Waverley Borough Council has designated several conservation areas in the town: Godalming Town Centre, Godalming Crown Pits, Godalming Navigations and River Wey, Ockford Road and Binscombe. Nearby, Milford, Witley and Wheelerstreet have their own. Much of the countryside around Godalming is within the Surrey Hills National Landscape.
If your home is in a conservation area or listed, check with Waverley Borough Council before ordering new windows or doors. Note that Surrey’s councils are being reorganised: from 1 April 2027 Waverley’s planning role passes to the new West Surrey unitary council, so applications made after that date go there instead. Our planning permission guide explains the general principles.
What we would suggest for Godalming homes
Victorian terraces in Farncombe and the town
Most of these houses lost their original sashes long ago. UPVC windows on Selecta Advance 70 in a woodgrain finish are a cost-effective replacement, while a composite door in a period panel design suits a terrace frontage. We do not make timber windows, so if original timber must stay in a conservation area, ask about secondary glazing.
Edwardian and inter-war family houses
Our aluminium windows, led by the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement with Cortizo and Alunet alternatives, have slim frames and come in heritage colours that sit well on bigger houses towards Busbridge and Charterhouse.
Extensions and gardens
Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifolds suit rear extensions with views over the hills, and we build conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns.
Villages and towns nearby
We regularly quote in Farncombe, Busbridge, Milford, Witley, Hambledon, Bramley and Shackleford. Further afield, see double glazing in Haslemere and Bordon, or our Surrey windows and doors page.
Close enough for a quick survey
Our only premises are at Coningsby Farm in Fifield; we have no Godalming showroom. The town is roughly 30 miles from us by road, usually around 50 minutes via the M25 and A3 or across country through Bracknell and Camberley. That makes it easy to fit in a survey, and our team travels from Fifield for every installation.
The surveyor measures each opening, shows samples of frames, colours and glass, and talks through any conservation area questions. You receive a written quotation, and our guide to double glazing costs explains what affects the price. Frames are then built in our workshop and fitted by our own installers.

Frequently asked questions
Which parts of Godalming are conservation areas?
Waverley Borough Council lists Godalming Town Centre, Godalming Crown Pits, Godalming Navigations and River Wey, Ockford Road and Binscombe as conservation areas, with Milford, Witley and Wheelerstreet nearby. If your property is in one of these or is listed, check with the council before changing windows or doors, as the rules can differ from elsewhere.
Who will handle planning in Godalming after 2027?
Waverley Borough Council handles planning now. Under Surrey's local government reorganisation, Waverley is replaced by the new West Surrey unitary council from 1 April 2027, so applications after that date go to the new authority. Conservation areas and listed buildings remain protected, so the need to check before replacing windows does not change.
Can I get a timber look for my Farncombe terrace?
Yes, though we do not make timber windows. Woodgrain-finish UPVC on the Selecta Advance 70 system gives a timber appearance without the repainting, and aluminium comes in heritage colours. A composite front door in a traditional panel design completes the look. If original timber windows must stay, secondary glazing is an alternative.
How quickly can you survey in Godalming?
Godalming is roughly 30 miles from our Fifield workshop, usually around 50 minutes by road, so it is one of the easier towns for us to reach. Call or send photos and we will offer a survey date. After you accept the quote, lead times start from 10 days because we fabricate aluminium frames ourselves.
Are sliding doors or bifolds better for a Godalming extension?
It depends how you use the space. Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors give large glass panels and slim meeting frames, ideal for framing a view of the hills. Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds open almost the full width for summer living. Our surveyor can show both and measure the opening for either.
