Double Glazing in Richmond upon Thames: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Double glazing in Richmond upon Thames needs care: this is the only London borough on both banks of the Thames, and it mixes Georgian riverside houses, Victorian villas, 1950s Span flats and plenty of planning controls. Inspired Glazing makes aluminium windows and doors at its own workshop in Fifield, near Windsor, and also fits UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories. We have no Richmond office, but the borough is close: roughly 18 to 22 miles by road from Fifield, usually around 40 minutes to an hour.

Heathrow, the river and your windows

Two local factors come up again and again. The first is aircraft noise. Richmond Council explains that the borough lies due east of both Heathrow runways. When the wind is from the west, which it says is about 75% of the year, landing aircraft pass over Richmond, Kew, East Sheen, Barnes and St Margarets. On easterly days, departures affect Twickenham, Teddington, Whitton, Hampton and Hampton Wick. Well-fitted double glazing with good seals is one part of reducing noise indoors; ask us at survey about glass options for bedrooms facing the flight path.

The second is the Thames. Parts of the riverside fall within Environment Agency flood warning areas, and Beverley Brook at Barnes has its own. If you are near the water, check the flood map before planning new doors at garden level.

Eighty-five conservation areas and many Article 4 streets

The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames is the planning authority, and its conservation area guidance lists 85 designated conservation areas. On top of that, the council has Article 4 directions on dozens of streets, from cottages in Kew and Petersham to roads in Barnes, East Sheen, Twickenham and Hampton Hill, and its guidance names new doors and windows among the works that then need planning permission. Barnes Village alone holds Georgian mansions on The Terrace and Victorian townhouses along the river. Before you order anything, check with Richmond Council whether your address is covered. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, and leaseholders will normally need freeholder consent. Our planning guide for replacement windows sets out the basics.

What we fit, and where it suits

Period houses in Richmond, Twickenham and Barnes

Many fine Twickenham houses are Victorian, built after the station opened in 1848. Where planning allows, our aluminium windows give narrow sightlines: the Reynaers SlimLine 68 is an outward-opening casement with slim profiles, and Cortizo and Alunet ranges add choice. We do not make timber windows or doors, so on streets where timber is expected, confirm with the council first.

Mid-century and modernist homes

Ham has the Span estate at Parkleys (1954 to 1955) and Teddington has Mallard Place (1984), both in conservation areas. Clean-lined aluminium can suit these homes, subject to the council’s view.

Family homes in West Twickenham, Whitton and Hampton

Census figures show terraces and semis are the most common homes in West Twickenham. UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system and composite doors are practical for houses like these outside the controlled streets. At the back, Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors open kitchens to the garden, and we build conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns.

Kew, Petersham and the cottage streets

Article 4 directions in Richmond reach some very small homes, such as Cambridge Cottages and Watcombe Cottages in the Kew Green area, as well as streets in Petersham and Ham. On these, the council will want any new window to keep the proportions of the old one. We can measure, draw the existing and proposed elevations, and give you product details for an application, so the decision is made before you spend money on frames.

Frequently asked questions

Will new double glazing help with Heathrow aircraft noise in Richmond?

It can help. Richmond Council says landing aircraft pass over Richmond, Kew, East Sheen, Barnes and St Margarets on westerly winds, and departures affect Twickenham and Teddington on easterlies. Replacing old, poorly sealed windows usually makes rooms quieter. At survey we can discuss glass options for the rooms most affected. Results depend on the house.

How do I know if my Richmond street has an Article 4 direction?

Richmond Council publishes its Article 4 directions by conservation area, covering streets in Kew, Petersham, Barnes, East Sheen, Twickenham, Hampton Hill and elsewhere. Where one applies, new windows and doors can need planning permission. Check with the council for your exact address before ordering. We can provide drawings and specifications for an application.

Can you replace windows in a Span flat at Parkleys in Ham?

Parkleys is a conservation area, and as a flat it has no householder permitted development rights. Any change to the outside is likely to need planning permission and your freeholder's or management company's consent. Check with Richmond Council and the estate management first. We can then survey and quote for aluminium windows that respect the original design.

How far is Richmond from your workshop?

Our workshop is at Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 18 to 22 miles from most of the borough by road. Depending on traffic and whether you are in Hampton or Barnes, the drive is usually around 40 minutes to an hour. We have no local office; our own team travels from Fifield for both the survey and the fitting.

Do you fit sliding doors for riverside homes in Twickenham?

Yes. We fit Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 aluminium sliding doors and Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold doors. If your home is close to the Thames, check the Environment Agency flood map and any conservation area rules with Richmond Council before planning a new garden-level opening. We will measure and advise on the best layout at the free survey.
