From Roman grid to 1930s semis: Gloucester’s housing
Gloucester City Council’s own townscape study traces the city’s buildings through almost two thousand years. The centre still follows the Roman street pattern of the gate streets, and Westgate Street keeps medieval timber-framed buildings, including the Old Judges House, described as the largest surviving medieval timber-framed building in England. Brick largely took over from stone in the eighteenth century, giving Georgian and Regency houses, and rapid nineteenth-century growth added terraces, villas and by-law houses.
The twentieth century brought brick and render 1930s semis and bungalows with generous gardens, then post-war estates. The study notes 96 surviving Hawksley BL8 bungalows in Podsmead and BISF houses in Moreland. Former villages such as Hempsted were absorbed into the city, Quedgeley is a town within the city boundary, and Churchdown and Brockworth have joined the wider urban area. At the Docks, old warehouses have been converted into flats.
Matching the product to the property
- Victorian terraces and villas: slim aluminium windows, led by the outward-opening Reynaers SlimLine 68 casement, or Cortizo and Alunet ranges.
- 1930s semis and bungalows: UPVC windows and doors in the Selecta Advance 70 system, or aluminium for a more contemporary look.
- Post-war and system-built houses: we survey carefully, because non-traditional construction can affect how frames are fixed. We will tell you honestly if something needs further checks.
- Front entrances: composite doors give a timber-style appearance. We do not make timber windows or doors.
- Rear of the house: Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifolds, and conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns.
Gloucester City Council and conservation areas
Gloucester City Council is the planning authority. There are 14 conservation areas in the city, most around the historic core, with Hempsted and Hucclecote Green among the exceptions; others include Kingsholm and The Docks. If your home is listed, in a conservation area, or a flat, check with Gloucester City Council before ordering. That applies particularly to Docks warehouse apartments: flats have no householder permitted development rights, and the building owner’s consent will usually be needed too. Churchdown and Brockworth fall under Tewkesbury Borough Council rather than the city. Read our guide to planning permission for replacement windows for the general picture.
The city was badly hit by the July 2007 floods, when hundreds of homes flooded. If your house has been affected, mention it at survey so we can discuss door thresholds.
Some practical points are particular to the city. Kingsholm is home to Gloucester Rugby’s stadium, so for homes nearby we avoid booking installation days that clash with home matches, when parking is hardest. In the Docks, the old warehouses now hold the Gloucester Waterways Museum, flats, shops and bars, and access for glass deliveries usually has to be agreed with the building’s management in advance.
Neighbourhoods we cover
We work in the city centre, Kingsholm, Barnwood, Hucclecote, Hempsted and Quedgeley, and out to Churchdown and Brockworth. Nearby pages: Cheltenham, Stroud and Tewkesbury.
Survey to installation
Your free survey covers measurements, access, glass and colour choices, with samples brought to you. A written quote follows: aluminium windows start from £400, and our double glazing cost guide explains the variables. Aluminium frames are fabricated in Fifield with lead times from 10 days, then our own team travels up to fit them on the agreed date and clears away the old frames. If you are replacing windows in a Victorian terrace where the neighbours have kept a consistent look, we can match glazing patterns and colours so the street still reads as one. Every job carries a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and hold Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions
Can I replace the windows in a Gloucester Docks apartment?
Possibly, but it needs checking first. The Docks is a conservation area, several warehouses are historic buildings, and flats have no householder permitted development rights. You will usually need planning consent and the building owner's agreement. Check with Gloucester City Council and your managing agent before getting quotes.
Do you fit windows in BISF or other system-built houses?
We survey these homes carefully, because non-traditional construction can affect how new frames are fixed and sealed. If anything needs further investigation we will say so honestly before quoting. Gloucester has examples such as the BISF houses in Moreland and Hawksley bungalows in Podsmead, noted in the council's own townscape study.
How far are you from Gloucester?
Our workshop is at Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 90 miles from Gloucester by road and usually around an hour and forty minutes away. We have no local office, so survey and fitting dates are booked in advance. Your windows are made in our own workshop and fitted by our own team.
Is UPVC or aluminium better for a 1930s semi in Gloucester?
Both suit 1930s semis. UPVC in the Selecta Advance 70 system is often the more economical choice and comes in woodgrain finishes. Aluminium, from £400 per window, gives slimmer frames and a sharper look. We will price both at your free survey so you can compare.
Who handles planning in Churchdown and Brockworth?
Although they are part of Gloucester's wider urban area, Churchdown and Brockworth come under Tewkesbury Borough Council rather than Gloucester City Council. If you live there and your home is listed, in a conservation area or a flat, check with Tewkesbury Borough Council before ordering new windows or doors.
