An old county town on the Thames
Abingdon grew around its Saxon abbey, prospered on wool and weaving, and was a county town of Berkshire before moving into Oxfordshire in 1974. Later it was home to the MG car factory from 1929 until 1980. That long history means the housing ranges widely. Medieval and Georgian buildings line the old streets around the Market Place. Victorian suburbs spread out from the centre. Twentieth-century estates such as Peachcroft spread the town outwards, and former industrial sites, including the old Morland brewery and the Gaol, have been turned into homes and flats.
Albert Park, Northcourt and the town centre
Vale of White Horse District Council lists three conservation areas in Abingdon: the Town Centre, Albert Park and Northcourt. The Albert Park suburb was laid out from 1860, and a 2026 draft appraisal says almost all its housing dates from between about 1860 and 1912. It describes red and polychrome brick, Corallian stone, bay windows, tile-hung gables and some surviving wooden sashes, and its guidance favours wooden casement or sash windows. We do not make timber windows, so if your home is in one of these areas, or is listed, check with Vale of White Horse District Council before choosing replacements. Our article on planning permission for replacement windows sets out the general rules.
If you live in a flat, such as one of the brewery or Gaol conversions, flats do not have householder permitted development rights, and you will normally need the freeholder’s consent as well. Ask your managing agent early.
Flood risk and riverside homes
Abingdon has flooded in 2000, 2003 and 2007; the 2007 floods affected around 400 homes. The Ock, the Thames, the Stert and Sandford Brook all play a part. Double glazing is not flood protection, but if you live near the rivers, tell us at the survey. Thresholds and door positions on low-lying properties are worth discussing before we order.
Which products suit which Abingdon homes
- Victorian villas and terraces outside the conservation areas: slim aluminium windows, led by the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement, with Cortizo and Alunet as alternatives.
- Post-war and later estate houses: UPVC windows and doors in the Selecta Advance 70 system, including woodgrain finishes for a timber look.
- Front doors: a composite door for a solid, low-maintenance entrance.
- Gardens and extensions: Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding patio doors, Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold doors, and conservatories or orangeries.
Worth checking before we visit
- Whether your house falls inside the Town Centre, Albert Park or Northcourt conservation areas, or is listed.
- Whether you own the freehold. Leaseholders in converted buildings will need consent before work starts.
- Which rooms feel coldest or noisiest, so we can prioritise them if you are phasing the work.
- Whether the garden or ground floor sits low towards the Ock or the Thames.
Having those answers ready means the survey can focus on measuring and choosing, and the quote you receive will reflect the house as it really is.

Frequently asked questions
Which parts of Abingdon are conservation areas?
Vale of White Horse District Council lists three conservation areas in Abingdon: the Town Centre, Albert Park and Northcourt. A draft appraisal of Albert Park favours wooden sash or casement windows on its Victorian houses. If your home is in any of them, or is listed, check with the council before replacing windows or doors.
Can I replace the windows in my Abingdon flat?
Usually, but there are extra steps. Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, so planning permission may be needed, and most leases require the freeholder's written consent for new windows. Speak to your managing agent and the council first. We can provide specifications and drawings to support both requests.
Do you offer timber windows for period homes in Abingdon?
No, we do not make timber windows or doors. For a timber look, we offer woodgrain-finish UPVC and aluminium, and composite front doors. Where a conservation area or listed building requires timber, we will tell you honestly that we are not the right supplier rather than fit something the council may reject.
How long does it take to get to Abingdon?
Our team travels from our workshop in Fifield, near Windsor. Abingdon is roughly 40 miles by road and usually takes about an hour. We do not have a local showroom, so we bring frame, colour and hardware samples to your free survey, and the same team returns to carry out the installation.
Is it worth replacing older double glazing in an Abingdon estate house?
Often, yes. Older frames can have failed seals, worn hinges and draughty gaskets, and modern units perform better. Our surveyor will check whether new glass alone would do the job or whether full replacement gives better value. Aluminium windows start from £400, and the survey and quote are free.
