Double Glazing in Tewkesbury: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Inspired Glazing installs double glazing in Tewkesbury using aluminium windows and doors fabricated in our own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, plus UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories. Tewkesbury is one of the furthest towns we serve, roughly 95 miles by road and typically around an hour and fifty minutes’ drive. We have no office nearby, so surveys and fitting are arranged well in advance and timed around the journey.

Where two rivers meet

Tewkesbury grew up where the Severn and the Avon converge, and that setting has shaped the town in two ways. The first is its medieval plan. The layout of the centre and its radiating roads has barely changed since the Middle Ages, and Church Street, Barton Street and High Street still carry long burgage plots and narrow alleys running back from the frontages. Timber-framed buildings are everywhere, from the medieval town houses at 82–83 Church Street to the row on the north side of St Mary’s Lane. Some timber frames hide behind later fronts: 74 Church Street has an eighteenth-century stuccoed brick front with a parapet over its timber frame.

The second is flooding. Flood-prone land has made it hard for the town to expand, and in July 2007 more than 3,500 homes were evacuated as the rivers overflowed. Growth has continued beyond the old core: the Mitton estate was added in 1965, with more homes at Mitton in the 2000s, and Newtown, Wheatpieces and Northway form the suburbs. Ashchurch for Tewkesbury station lies about two miles east of the centre.

The old town brings its own fitting challenges. Many houses front directly onto the pavement on busy streets, and some are reached only along the narrow alleys between buildings. At survey we work out where frames can be unloaded and how far they need to be carried, so the fitting team arrives with enough people and the work causes as little disruption as possible to neighbours and passers-by.

Our approach for each kind of Tewkesbury home

Historic centre. In the medieval streets, the question is often whether replacement is allowed at all. Where originals must stay, secondary glazing can help with draughts and noise. We do not make timber windows, and we will not suggest UPVC where it would be refused.

Later houses near the centre. Our aluminium windows include the Reynaers SlimLine 68, an outward-opening casement with slim frames, and Cortizo and Alunet ranges.

Mitton, Wheatpieces, Northway and newer estates. Selecta Advance 70 UPVC windows and doors are a cost-effective replacement, and a composite door finishes the front.

Gardens. Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors, and conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns. If your home has flooded before, tell us at survey so we can talk through thresholds.

Planning with Tewkesbury Borough Council

Tewkesbury Borough Council covers the town and a large rural area of north Gloucestershire, including Bishop’s Cleeve, Winchcombe and Twyning. Its conservation areas include Tewkesbury itself, Twyning and Bishops Cleeve. The council says some conservation areas have Article 4 Directions, covering whole areas or targeted buildings, and gives replacement windows as an example of work that may then need permission. It also offers an online heritage constraints checker. Check with Tewkesbury Borough Council before ordering for any listed building, conservation area home or flat; flats have no householder permitted development rights. See our guide to planning permission for replacement windows.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace windows in a timber-framed Tewkesbury house?

Many of the town's timber-framed buildings are listed, which means listed building consent is needed and replacement may not be allowed. Check with Tewkesbury Borough Council before ordering. Where the original windows must stay, secondary glazing fitted inside is often the practical route, and we can survey and quote for it.

Does an Article 4 Direction affect my Tewkesbury home?

It might. Tewkesbury Borough Council says some conservation areas have Article 4 Directions, covering either a whole area or particular buildings, and replacement windows are one example of work that may then need permission. Use the council's heritage constraints checker or contact its planning team for your address.

How far do you travel to Tewkesbury?

Our workshop is at Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 95 miles from Tewkesbury by road, typically just under two hours. We have no local branch, so we plan surveys and fitting dates in advance. Our own team does the survey, fabrication and installation, with no subcontractors.

What windows suit a house in Northway or Wheatpieces?

For most modern estate houses, UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system are a cost-effective replacement, with composite front doors to match. If you prefer slimmer frames or a contemporary finish, our aluminium windows start from £400. We will compare both options at your free survey.

Our home flooded in 2007. Can you help with new doors?

Yes, tell us at survey. We cannot make flood-proofing claims, but we can discuss threshold heights, door styles and what sits at ground level. You may also want specialist flood-resilience advice. Tewkesbury sits where the Severn and Avon converge, and more than 3,500 homes were evacuated in 2007.
