Double Glazing in Oxford: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Inspired Glazing installs double glazing in Oxford, from aluminium windows and doors made in our own workshop to UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories. We are honest about where we are: our only base is in Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 40 miles from Oxford by road. The drive usually takes around an hour, longer at rush hour on the ring road, and our team makes that journey for every survey and installation.

Oxford’s housing is mostly not what visitors see

The colleges and the city centre take the photographs, but the homes we are asked about are mostly further out. Oxford City Council looks after 18 conservation areas, and their names give a fair map of the city’s residential history:

Beyond those boundaries sit the twentieth-century suburbs of Headington, Marston and Cowley, home of the Mini plant, and the council estate at Blackbird Leys.

Jericho’s Article 4 direction

Jericho is the area where we most often tell people to pause. Oxford City Council served an Article 4 direction there in 2011, soon after the conservation area was designated. On elevations facing a highway or waterway, planning permission is needed to alter or replace windows and doors, their cills, arches and surrounds, or to change the size of openings. If you live in Jericho, check with Oxford City Council before ordering anything. In the other conservation areas, the safest course is the same: ask the council first. We do not make timber windows, so where timber is required we will say so. Read our guide to planning permission for replacement windows for the general picture.

Flats, HMOs and shared houses

Oxford has a large number of flats and shared houses. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so new windows may need planning permission, and leaseholders will normally need the freeholder’s consent. Landlords replacing windows in a rented house should also check any building or licensing conditions with the council. We are happy to supply specifications to help.

Near the rivers

The Thames, known locally as the Isis, and the Cherwell meet south of the city centre, and their flood plains wrap around much of central Oxford. If your home is close to either river or the meadows, tell us when you book. We look at door thresholds and drainage details on low-lying properties before anything is ordered. Landlords should also let us know about tenancy dates, so we can plan fitting days around tenants rather than the other way round.

Products for different Oxford homes

Victorian terraces and villas

Where the council allows aluminium, the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement offers slim frames that respect older openings. Cortizo and Alunet give further options. See our aluminium windows and doors.

Twentieth-century semis

For the suburban semis of Headington, Marston and Cowley, UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system are a practical, good-value choice, and a composite door refreshes the front of the house.

Kitchen extensions and gardens

Narrow Oxford gardens make every metre of glass count. We fit Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding patio doors and Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold doors, along with roof lanterns, orangeries and conservatories.

Neighbouring towns

As well as the city itself, we work in nearby towns including Kidlington, Abingdon and Witney.

How we handle an Oxford job

Send us photos on WhatsApp or ring for an initial chat. We then book a survey, measure every opening and show you frames, colours and handles at home. Parking and access can be tight in central streets, so we note loading arrangements at the same visit. Your written quote follows; aluminium windows start from £400, and our double glazing cost guide explains what affects the price. Aluminium frames are made in our Fifield workshop with lead times from 10 days, fitted by our own team, and covered by a 10-year guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need permission to replace windows in Jericho?

Very probably. Oxford City Council served an Article 4 direction in Jericho in 2011. On elevations facing a road or waterway, planning permission is needed to alter or replace windows and doors, their surrounds, or to change opening sizes. Speak to the council before ordering. We can provide drawings and product details for an application.

How many conservation areas does Oxford have?

Oxford City Council lists 18, including Jericho, North Oxford Victorian Suburb, Walton Manor, Osney Town, St Clement's and Iffley Road, Old Headington, Headington Quarry, Iffley and Wolvercote with Godstow. If your home is in one, or is listed, check with the council before changing windows or doors, as rules vary by property.

Can I fit new windows in my Oxford flat?

You can, but extra permissions usually apply. Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, so planning permission may be needed for replacement windows, and most leases require the freeholder's consent. Talk to your managing agent and Oxford City Council early. We can supply specifications to support both.

Which windows suit a 1930s semi in Headington?

Most interwar semis suit either UPVC or aluminium. Our Selecta Advance 70 UPVC windows are a cost-effective replacement and come in woodgrain finishes. If you prefer slimmer frames and a more modern look, the Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium casement is our core range. Our surveyor can show samples of both at home.

Do you have an office or showroom in Oxford?

No. Our only premises are our workshop and office at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 40 miles away by road. The drive usually takes around an hour. We bring samples to your free survey, and the same team that measures your home also carries out the installation.
