Reading Salisbury’s streets
Salisbury was laid out in the 13th century as a planned new town. Its grid of streets created the blocks known as chequers, many named after trades, inns and merchants. In the Close, large houses such as Mompesson House and Arundells were built or rebuilt from the late 17th century. That historic centre is why window work in the middle of the city is so closely watched.
The Victorian city grew to about half its present size. It spread up the west-facing slope of Milford Hill, onto the former Wyndham estate between London Road and Castle Street, and around Wilton Road, Devizes Road, Fisherton Street and Church Fields, where railway, brewing and brickmaking jobs were based. The council built houses from 1920 to 1930, and private building between Castle Road and London Road followed. Later growth took the population from 33,000 in 1951 to more than 40,000. Across the river, East and West Harnham, Bemerton Heath and Bishopdown Farm have their own mix of homes.
Water, meadows and low ground
The city sits where the Avon, Nadder and Bourne meet, and the low-lying land floods, especially in winter. The Town Path across the Harnham water meadows is sometimes impassable. If your home is near the rivers, mention any past flooding at survey. It affects how we detail thresholds on new doors, and we would rather know before we measure.
Choosing products for Salisbury homes
- Victorian and Edwardian houses on Milford Hill or around Fisherton. Our aluminium windows, led by the outward-opening Reynaers SlimLine 68, give slim frames and many colour options. Cortizo and Alunet are also available. Prices start from £400 a window.
- Interwar and post-war semis. UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system are a cost-effective replacement, including woodgrain finishes.
- Front doors. A composite door suits most terraces and semis. We do not make timber doors or windows.
- Garden openings. Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliders, or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifolds.
- Extra space. Conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns.
Planning with Wiltshire Council
Wiltshire Council, the unitary authority, handles planning for Salisbury. The national conservation area register lists two Salisbury conservation areas as well as separate ones for Old Sarum, Stratford sub Castle, Britford and Wilton. With the Close, the chequers and a great many listed buildings in the centre, check with Wiltshire Council before changing windows on any older property. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so they often need consent. Our planning permission guide explains the common cases. Laverstock and Ford, including Bishopdown Farm, is a separate parish but is still in Wiltshire.
From survey to fitted
We visit, measure and talk through the options, then send a written quote. Our cost guide explains the main price factors. Aluminium frames are made at Fifield with lead times from 10 days. Fitting dates are booked as a block to make the most of each trip, and the work carries a 10-year guarantee. We cover Harnham, Bemerton, Fisherton, Old Sarum, Laverstock and Wilton. See also Andover, Romsey and Ringwood.
Almshouses, infirmaries and big houses: a note on listed fabric
Salisbury’s building history goes well beyond the Cathedral. Almshouses were founded here from 1683 onwards, including Taylor’s in 1698, Frowde’s in 1750 and Hussey’s in 1794. On Fisherton Street, the Georgian former infirmary has been converted into homes as Pembroke House. If you own a flat or house in a converted historic building like these, expect tighter controls than on a 1930s semi. Talk to Wiltshire Council and your management company before getting quotes.
For homes without heritage restrictions, the choice comes down to looks, budget and how you use the rooms. Slim aluminium suits larger rear openings and modern extensions. UPVC is the economical route for whole-house replacement. As a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner with Constructionline Silver, we can talk you through both honestly at survey.

Frequently asked questions
Do you really cover Salisbury from Windsor?
Yes. We travel from our workshop in Fifield, near Windsor, which is roughly 70 miles and around an hour and a half from Salisbury by road. We have no office in Salisbury. To keep things efficient, we plan the survey and fitting days in advance and usually complete an installation over consecutive days.
Is my Salisbury home in a conservation area?
It might be. The national register lists two Salisbury conservation areas, plus separate areas for Old Sarum, Stratford sub Castle, Britford and Wilton. The historic centre, the Close and the chequers carry heavy protection, and many buildings are listed. Check your address with Wiltshire Council's planning team before ordering new windows.
My house is near the river in Harnham. Does that change anything?
It can. Salisbury's rivers flood the low-lying land, especially in winter. If your home has flooded before or sits close to the water, tell us at survey. That way we can plan door thresholds and drainage details properly. We cannot flood-proof a home, but we can avoid choices that make low thresholds more vulnerable.
Can you fit windows in a Salisbury flat?
Yes, but check permissions first. Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, so new windows may need planning permission from Wiltshire Council. Leaseholders usually need the freeholder's written consent too. In or near the conservation areas, the council may also have views on appearance. We can supply drawings and specifications to support your application.
What will double glazing cost in Salisbury?
Our aluminium windows start from £400 each. Size, opening type, colour and glass specification decide the final figure. We plan the work to make the journey efficient. A free survey gives you a fixed written quote, and our cost guide explains the main factors.
