We design and build uPVC conservatories in Colnbrook, including lean-to, Edwardian and Victorian rooms, with solid roofs that help keep aircraft and road noise down. Inspired Glazing works from Coningsby Farm in Fifield, around 20 to 25 minutes away by the M4, and our own fitters lay the base and raise the frames. A 10-year guarantee covers every conservatory we install.

A garden room close to the airport
Colnbrook’s position next to Heathrow and between the M4 and M25 shapes how a conservatory should be specified. A thin roof that drums in the rain and lets every passing aircraft through will not get much use. For that reason we usually steer Colnbrook clients towards a solid or insulated roof, or high-performance glass, and talk about which rooms the new space will join before choosing a design.
Picking a style
Gardens behind Colnbrook’s terraces and post-war semis are often narrow, while newer detached homes may have more width. The shape of the plot usually points to the right design.
- Lean-to conservatories run along the back wall under a single slope, ideal where eaves are low or space is tight.
- Edwardian conservatories give a square footprint that makes the most of every metre.
- Victorian conservatories add a curved, faceted front that softens the end of the garden.
- Gable-ended designs, sometimes described as Regency or Elizabethan, raise the front for extra height and light.
- L-shaped, T-shaped and P-shaped layouts suit corner plots and larger houses that need separate dining and lounge areas.
Small conservatories work well as a reading corner or play room, and large ones as an open-plan living space. Browse all our conservatory designs for ideas.
Roofs that cope with noise and weather
A solid roof is insulated, plastered inside and far quieter in rain, which makes it a natural fit for Colnbrook. Glass roofs bring in more daylight and, with modern coated units, avoid the worst of summer heat. Polycarbonate keeps costs and weight down but lets in more sound. If you already have a conservatory that is too noisy or too cold, a new conservatory roof on the existing frames may solve the problem.
Orangeries, with brick piers and a central roof lantern, give a more solid feel. We also build uPVC porches to shelter a front door from the weather.
Permission and regulations
The Planning Portal sets out the permitted development limits for single-storey additions. At the rear, the usual maximum depth is 3 metres for attached and terraced houses and 4 metres for detached ones, with height capped at 4 metres and eaves at 3 metres if within 2 metres of a boundary. Prior approval is needed for deeper additions up to 6 or 8 metres. Extensions together may not cover more than half the garden around the original house, and these rights do not apply to flats or maisonettes. Read our page on conservatory and porch planning permission for more.
Under Building Regulations, a conservatory is normally exempt if it is single storey, built at ground level, smaller than 30 square metres, separated from the house by external walls, doors or windows, and heated by its own system with separate controls, with compliant glazing and electrics. A new structural opening into the house still requires approval. Because Colnbrook has a conservation area and listed buildings, check with Slough Borough Council if your home falls into either category.
Foundations and finishes
A conservatory is only as good as the ground it stands on. Our conservatory base guide explains the footings and dwarf walls. Frames come in white, woodgrain or dual colour, for example grey on the outside and white inside. Into the garden, choose uPVC French doors, sliding patio doors, or aluminium bifolds from Smart Visofold or Cortizo.
Working out a budget
Floor area, roof type, base work and doors all affect the cost. Our conservatory cost page explains each element, and after the survey you receive a written quotation for your own home. We itemise the base, frames, roof and doors separately, so you can see where the money goes and adjust the design if you want to bring the figure down.

Frequently asked questions
Which conservatory roof is quietest near Heathrow?
An insulated solid roof is the quietest option, because its layers absorb far more sound than a thin sheet. High-performance glass sits in between, and polycarbonate is the noisiest. For Colnbrook homes under the flight path, we normally recommend a solid roof or a glass roof with acoustic or high-specification units.
Can I put a conservatory on a terraced house in Colnbrook?
Usually, yes. A lean-to or compact Edwardian design suits a terrace well. Under permitted development, a terraced house can extend up to 3 metres at the rear without prior approval, provided height and boundary limits are met. Check with Slough Borough Council if the house is listed or in the conservation area.
Will my conservatory need Building Regulations approval?
Usually not, if it is under 30 square metres, at ground level, single storey, separated from the house by external-quality doors or windows, and heated independently. Glazing and electrics must still comply. Removing the existing back wall or creating a new opening into the house does need approval, which we explain before you decide.
How long does a conservatory take to build?
It depends on size and roof type. The base and dwarf walls come first, then the frames, roof and glazing, followed by electrics and finishing. Our lead time for manufactured items begins at around 10 days. At the survey we give you a realistic schedule for your own project, including any weather allowances.
Can a conservatory match my house if it is not white?
Yes. We offer woodgrain finishes and dual colour frames, such as anthracite grey outside with white inside. That lets the conservatory match grey or black windows on the main house. Doors into the garden can be colour matched too, whether you choose French doors, patio doors or aluminium bifolds.
