For double glazing in Calne, Inspired Glazing makes aluminium windows and doors in its own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, and also supplies UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories. Our own team fits everything. Calne is roughly 70 miles from Fifield by road, around an hour and twenty minutes along the M4. We have no Wiltshire office, so we plan surveys and fitting days in advance around that journey.

Stone, wool and bacon: how Calne was built
Older Calne is a stone town. Its 17th- and 18th-century houses have stone outer walls, mostly limestone rubble with ashlar dressings on the grander houses, and many are rendered. The broadcloth trade left Georgian clothiers’ houses around the triangular green by St Mary’s Church, where 24 listed buildings survive. Five of them are Grade II*. St Mary’s itself is the only Grade I building in the town.
The 20th century changed the centre. The Harris bacon factory employed about 2,000 people at its height. It closed in 1982 and was demolished, and the site was redeveloped with housing and a library. To the north-west, Lansdowne Park was completed in 2007, adding a large modern suburb. So a Calne survey might mean a rubble-stone cottage one day and a 2000s family house the next.
Downs, river and conservation areas
Calne sits at the north-western end of the North Wessex Downs. That National Landscape reaches as far west as Calne and Devizes, and the Cherhill White Horse, cut in 1780, is about three and a half miles east of the centre. The River Marden runs through the town, which is the only town on that river.
Wiltshire Council is the planning authority. The national register lists conservation areas for Calne itself and for nearby Cherhill, Compton Bassett and old Derry Hill. Stone and rendered houses in these areas are where window style is most likely to matter, so check with Wiltshire Council before you replace windows, and always if the building is listed. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows covers the general principles.
Matching products to Calne properties
Stone and rendered period homes: our aluminium windows, centred on the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement, keep frames slim, which helps on narrow openings in thick walls. Cortizo and Alunet give further choice. Windows start from Β£400.
Lansdowne Park and other modern houses: UPVC windows and doors in Selecta Advance 70 are a practical upgrade. For the rear, a Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding door or a Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold opens the room to the garden.
Doors and extensions: composite front doors give a timber look without timber upkeep. We do not make timber windows or doors. We also build conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns, and fit secondary glazing where a listed building rules out replacement.
What working with us looks like
First comes a free survey at your home, where we measure and talk through finishes and options. A written quote follows, and our double glazing cost page explains what moves the price. Frames are fabricated at Fifield with lead times from 10 days. Fitting is booked as consecutive days so the team is not driving the M4 more than it needs to, and work comes with a 10-year guarantee.
We cover Calne, Quemerford, Derry Hill, Cherhill, Compton Bassett and the Bowood side of town. Neighbouring pages include Chippenham, Devizes and Swindon.
Bowood, Derry Hill and the London Road side
South-west of the centre, the Bowood estate dates from 1725 and is a Grade I listed family seat. Derry Hill, on the approach to Bowood, has an old village core with its own conservation area. Quemerford, along the London Road, has grown into a suburb of Calne. Its Holy Trinity Church was built in 1852β3. These edges of town mix older cottages with later infill, so we look at each property on its own merits rather than assuming a standard fit.
We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and Constructionline Silver. Doing our own fabrication means that if a Calne opening is an awkward size, as stone-built houses often are, we make the frame to suit rather than forcing a stock size into the hole.

Frequently asked questions
Can aluminium windows work in Calne's old stone houses?
Often, yes. Slim aluminium frames such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 casement suit the narrow openings and deep reveals of stone and rendered houses. Whether they are allowed depends on the building. If it is listed, or in the Calne conservation area, check with Wiltshire Council first. Secondary glazing is an option where replacement is refused.
Is Calne in the North Wessex Downs National Landscape?
Calne sits at the north-western end of the North Wessex Downs, which reaches as far west as Calne and Devizes. Whether your property falls inside the designated area depends on its exact location. Wiltshire Council's planning team can confirm, and this matters mainly for extensions and larger changes rather than like-for-like windows.
How far do you travel to reach Calne?
We drive from our workshop in Fifield, near Windsor. That is roughly 70 miles, or around an hour and twenty minutes via the M4. We have no office in Wiltshire. Because of the distance, we agree survey and installation dates in advance and try to complete each job over consecutive days.
Do you replace windows in newer Lansdowne Park homes?
Yes. Newer houses like those in Lansdowne Park are usually straightforward to survey. Typical work is upgrading windows, adding a sliding or bifold door to the garden, or fitting a new composite front door. Check any covenants or estate rules on your property before choosing colours or styles that differ from the neighbours.
What guarantee do I get?
Our installations come with a 10-year guarantee. We make the aluminium frames in our own Fifield workshop, and our own team fits them, so one company answers for the product and the installation. If something needs attention, contact us on 01753 965 005 and we will arrange a visit.
