Double Glazing in Camden: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

If you need double glazing in Camden, Inspired Glazing can survey, manufacture and install aluminium windows and doors, UPVC windows, composite doors, secondary glazing and conservatories for homes from Bloomsbury up to Hampstead. We fabricate the aluminium frames in our own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, and fit them with our own team. There is no Camden branch; the borough is roughly 27 miles from Fifield by road, normally around an hour via the M4 and A40, and we travel in from Fifield for every survey and installation.

Half the borough is a conservation area

Camden Council has 40 conservation areas covering about half of the borough, so the starting point for most window projects here is planning rather than product. Several areas also have Article 4 directions, and Camden updated a number of them in June 2026, including Belsize, Hampstead, Fitzjohns Netherhall, Redington and Frognal, and South Hampstead (formerly Swiss Cottage). Primrose Hill has had a direction since 1983.

The Belsize fact sheet gives a clear idea of what these directions can mean. On the front of a house, or a side facing the road, planning permission is needed to replace windows or doors with a different material or design, and also to replace them with double-glazed versions, even if they match. Like-for-like replacement in the original material, size, profile and opening method does not need permission. For flats, rear windows are controlled too. Other areas have their own wording, so check with Camden Council for your address before choosing anything.

What Camden’s houses are like

In the south, Bloomsbury was laid out largely by the Dukes of Bedford, and Georgian town houses still surround Bedford Square, built between 1775 and 1783. Further north, much of Kentish Town’s residential fabric dates from the mid-nineteenth century and survived post-war redevelopment. The north of the borough is leafy and residential around Hampstead Heath: Hampstead, Belsize Park and parts of Highgate and Kilburn. After the Second World War, Camden built public housing to rehouse Londoners bombed out in the Blitz, and new homes have since gone up on former railway and gasworks land around King’s Cross.

So a Camden enquiry might involve a Belsize Park villa, a Kentish Town terrace, a mansion flat, a council-built maisonette or a new apartment near the canal, and each comes with different rules.

Flats and freeholders

Flats have no householder permitted development rights, and in areas such as Belsize the Article 4 controls reach rear windows of flats as well. On top of planning, leaseholders generally need written consent from the freeholder or managing agent. Get both sorted before booking a fit.

How the survey and fit work

A surveyor comes out from Fifield to measure, photograph each elevation and talk you through options that suit the planning position. You receive a written quote; aluminium windows start from £400 and lead times start from 10 days. If permission is needed, we can supply drawings and product specifications for your application, and we order only once you have the go-ahead. Our fitting team then removes the old frames, installs the new ones and finishes the reveals. Every installation carries our 10-year guarantee. Our double glazing cost guide and our page on planning permission for replacement windows go into more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace my sash windows with double glazing in Belsize Park?

Under the Belsize Article 4 direction, replacing front or road-facing windows with double-glazed versions needs planning permission, even if they match the originals. Like-for-like replacement in the same material and design does not. Rear windows on houses are not affected, but rear windows on flats are. Check with Camden Council before ordering.

Which Camden conservation areas have Article 4 directions?

Camden lists directions for areas including Belsize, Hampstead, Fitzjohns Netherhall, Redington and Frognal, South Hampstead and Primrose Hill, plus smaller ones for specific streets. Several were updated in June 2026. Camden has 40 conservation areas in total, so check with Camden Council for your exact address before planning new windows or doors.

Is secondary glazing allowed in a listed Camden building?

Secondary glazing is fitted inside the existing windows and leaves the outside unchanged, which is why it is often used in historic buildings. Internal works to a listed building can still need listed building consent, so ask Camden Council first. Once you know what is acceptable, we can survey and quote for made-to-measure secondary glazing.

Do you make timber windows for Hampstead houses?

No. We do not make timber windows or doors. Our timber-look options are woodgrain-finish UPVC or aluminium and composite doors. Where Camden requires like-for-like timber on a front elevation, we will tell you plainly, and we can still help with secondary glazing, rear doors or garden-facing windows where the rules allow.

How far is Camden from your workshop?

Our workshop and team are in Fifield, near Windsor. Camden is roughly 27 miles away by road, usually around an hour via the M4 and A40, though London traffic varies. We have no showroom in north London, so we book surveys and fitting days in advance and travel in from Fifield.
