A young town with a smallholding past

Carterton is one of the newer towns in Oxfordshire. In 1894 part of the estate here was sold to Homesteads Ltd, run by William Carter, who divided the land into smallholdings with bungalows. The settlement became known for market gardening, with tomatoes and grapes sent to Covent Garden. Construction of the airfield that became RAF Brize Norton began in the mid-1930s, and the base, now the RAF’s main air transport station, shaped almost everything that followed.

The housing reflects that story. From the 1960s large estates went up in the north-east of the town, many of them uniform houses with concrete cladding, and more than 2,000 houses had been built by 1976. Some mobile home sites were replaced by council housing in the early 1980s. Shilton Park, a mixed private and social development, followed in the 2000s, and a further eastern expansion was planned. The airfield perimeter limits growth to the south.

Older buildings are few but they do exist. Rock Farm, a Georgian farm complex, dates from around 1823, and the Emporium on the main road was built in 1911. If you own one of the town’s older properties, it is worth asking the council about its status before you change the windows.

What that means for windows and doors

Most Carterton homes are twentieth- or twenty-first-century, so the questions we hear are practical ones: tired early double glazing, draughty doors and how to get more from the garden.

1960s and 1970s estate houses

If the windows on a house of this age are failing or draughty, our UPVC windows and doors in the Selecta Advance 70 system are a cost-effective upgrade, and our aluminium windows, led by the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement, are there if you want slimmer frames. Cortizo and Alunet give you more aluminium styles.

Front doors

A composite door is a straightforward way to improve security and appearance on an estate house.

Newer homes and extensions

For Shilton Park and other recent developments, the windows are usually still sound, so the interest is in Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding patio doors, Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold doors, and conservatories, orangeries or porches. Check your estate covenants before changing the outside of a newer house.

If you live near the airfield and aircraft noise bothers you, mention it at the survey so we can talk through the glazing options available.

Planning in Carterton

Planning in the town is handled by West Oxfordshire District Council. Most houses can have replacement windows without a planning application, but listed buildings, flats and any home in a conservation area are different. Check with West Oxfordshire District Council if you are unsure, and see our guide to planning permission for replacement windows. If you live in service family accommodation, speak to the housing provider before arranging any work.

We cover Brize Norton, Black Bourton, the original mother parish of Carterton, and Alvescot, as well as all of the town’s estates. Witney is about four miles to the north-east; see our Witney page, and our Cirencester and Swindon pages for towns further west and south.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover Carterton, given you are based near Windsor?

Yes. Carterton is roughly 55 miles from our workshop at Fifield, usually around an hour and a quarter by road. Because of the distance, we plan survey and installation dates in advance and try to complete each stage in as few visits as possible. The same team measures your home and fits the windows and doors.

Can I replace the windows on a 1960s concrete-clad house?

Usually, yes. Many Carterton homes from the 1960s and 1970s have concrete cladding, and our surveyor will check the openings, cills and any cladding details carefully before measuring. UPVC in the Selecta Advance 70 system is a practical choice, and Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium is available if you prefer slimmer frames.

I live in service family accommodation. Can I order new windows?

You should speak to your housing provider before arranging any work, because the property is not yours to alter. If you own your Carterton home, the normal rules apply. Most houses can have replacement windows without planning permission, but check with West Oxfordshire District Council for flats or listed buildings.

Which doors suit a newer house in Shilton Park?

On newer homes, sliding doors and bifolds are worth considering. We fit Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors and Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold doors, plus composite front doors. Check your title deeds or estate management rules for covenants first, then our surveyor can measure the opening and quote.

How long does it take from survey to installation?

Lead times start from 10 days once the survey measurements are approved, since we fabricate aluminium frames in our own Fifield workshop. For Carterton we then agree an installation date that suits you and fits the travel plan. Sliding doors, bifolds, conservatories and unusual colours can take longer, and we confirm timings in writing.
