Looking for double glazing in Chertsey? Inspired Glazing makes aluminium windows and doors at its workshop in Fifield, near Windsor, and fits them with its own installers, along with UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories. Chertsey is one of our closer towns: roughly 13 miles by road, usually around 25 to 30 minutes through Windsor and Egham or via the M25. Our team travels from Fifield, which makes it easy to fit a survey around your diary.

Chertsey’s historic core

Chertsey grew up around its medieval abbey, and the town centre still follows the long, narrow medieval plots along Guildford Street and London Street. Runnymede Borough Council first designated the Chertsey conservation area in 1969 and last reviewed it in 2020. Its appraisal describes Georgian and Victorian buildings, the larger and grander houses of Windsor Street, the historic enclave around Abbey Green, and later Victorian semis on roads such as Drill Hall Road. The appraisal also has a section on Article 4 directions within the conservation area.

So if you live in the centre, do not assume replacement windows are permitted development. Check with Runnymede Borough Council first, especially for a listed building, a house covered by an Article 4 direction, or a flat (flats have no householder permitted development rights). Our planning guide for replacement windows explains the general rules. From 1 April 2027 Runnymede becomes part of the new West Surrey Council, so the planning authority’s name will change.

Beyond the centre

Most Chertsey homes are not in the conservation area. Around the centre are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, then interwar semis, post-war estates and newer infill towards Chertsey South, Lyne and Ottershaw. Along the Thames and the low ground near Chertsey Meads there are riverside houses and bungalows. Thorpe, to the north, has its own conservation area and village character.

That variety shows up in what people ask us for. Owners of terraces near the station tend to want slim, neat frames that suit the street. Families in the post-war roads usually want warmer, quieter rooms and a stronger front door. Riverside owners are often thinking about the view, and want a wide sliding or folding door that makes the most of the garden and the water beyond it.

Rivers and roads

Chertsey sits low between the Thames, the Abbey River and the Chertsey Bourne, all of which have Environment Agency flood warning areas here. If your ground floor has flooded before, tell us at survey so we can talk about door thresholds and sealing. The M25 runs along the west of the town at junction 11, and the area lies under Heathrow’s wider flight paths, so acoustic glass is worth discussing for bedrooms facing the motorway.

Frequently asked questions

How far are you from Chertsey?

Our workshop and office are at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 13 miles from Chertsey by road. The drive usually takes around 25 to 30 minutes, so our team can survey and fit at short notice. We have no separate office in Chertsey; everything is made and dispatched from Fifield.

Do I need permission to replace windows in Chertsey town centre?

Possibly. The centre is in the Chertsey conservation area, and the council's appraisal covers Article 4 directions there, which can remove permitted development rights for changes like windows. Listed buildings need consent, and flats have no permitted development rights. Check with Runnymede Borough Council before ordering.

Can you fit acoustic glass for homes near the M25?

Yes. We can specify laminated acoustic glass and suitable cavity widths in both aluminium and UPVC frames to cut road and aircraft noise. It is worth considering for bedrooms facing the M25 at junction 11 or under the Heathrow flight paths. We will discuss options at the free survey.

My Chertsey home is near the Thames and has flooded before. Does that affect new doors?

It does not stop you replacing them, but tell us at survey. We can discuss threshold design and sealing for ground-floor doors. Flood-resistant door products are a separate specialist category, so we will be clear about what our standard doors can and cannot do.

What changes when Runnymede becomes West Surrey Council?

From 1 April 2027 Runnymede Borough Council is replaced by the new West Surrey Council, which takes over planning. Existing conservation areas remain in place unless changed. If you are applying close to that date, check which authority to submit to and whether the application process has changed.
