Eastleigh’s railway streets and what came after
Eastleigh is a railway town in the truest sense. The lines through what was then called Bishopstoke opened in 1839 and 1840, and the parish of Eastleigh was only created in 1868. The London and South Western Railway moved its carriage and wagon works here around 1890 and its locomotive works in 1909, and the workers needed homes. The result is the Victorian grid of streets around the town centre, which the Swan Centre was built into in 1989, lined with terraced and semi-detached houses of that era.
Around that core, the borough grew outward. Chandler’s Ford, west of the M3, started with 1920s building at King’s Court, Merdon and Hiltingbury and now forms most of the Eastleigh urban area. Bishopstoke, Fair Oak and Boyatt Wood add post-war and later estates. The railway works closed in 2006, though work has since resumed there on a smaller scale, and the town has kept growing with new residential and commercial schemes. Eastleigh became a civil parish with its own town council in 2021.
Eastleigh’s housing is therefore a mix of late-Victorian terraces, inter-war semis and a great many homes from the 1960s onward.
Noise from the airport and the motorway
Southampton Airport sits within Eastleigh, and the M3 and M27 meet on the edge of the town. If you live under the flight path or near the motorway, noise reduction is often as important as heat retention. Mention it at the survey and we will discuss glass options aimed at reducing sound, along with the fitting details, such as well-sealed frames and properly filled gaps, that make a difference.
Conservation areas and the council
Eastleigh Borough Council is the planning authority. The borough has eight conservation areas: Bishopstoke, Botley, Old Bursledon, Bursledon Windmill, Gaters Mill, Hamble-le-Rice, Netley Abbey and Orchards Way. None covers the railway streets of central Eastleigh, but Bishopstoke is right next door. If your home is in one of these areas, is listed, or is a flat, check with Eastleigh Borough Council before you order; flats do not have householder permitted development rights. Our guide to planning and replacement windows explains more.
Which products for which Eastleigh homes
- Victorian and Edwardian railway terraces: slim aluminium casements keep the narrow front elevations looking right. The Reynaers SlimLine 68 is our core aluminium window, built in our workshop; Cortizo and Alunet are also available. Aluminium windows start from £400.
- Chandler’s Ford and Bishopstoke family homes: UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 profile for an affordable upgrade, or aluminium if you are extending and want the new and old windows to match.
- Front doors: composite doors for security and low maintenance, with timber-effect finishes; we do not make timber doors or windows.
- Extensions and gardens: bifold doors from Smart Visofold or Cortizo, Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, and conservatories and orangeries.
Flats are common close to the Swan Centre and the station. If you own one, remember that the freeholder or managing agent normally controls the windows under the lease, and that planning rules for flats differ from those for houses.

Frequently asked questions
Can double glazing reduce noise from Southampton Airport?
Good double glazing, properly fitted, will cut outside noise compared with old single glazing or failed units. If aircraft or M27 traffic is your main concern, tell us at the survey. We will talk through glass options aimed at better acoustic performance and the fitting details, such as well-sealed frames, that matter most for reducing sound coming into the house.
Is central Eastleigh a conservation area?
Eastleigh Borough Council lists eight conservation areas: Bishopstoke, Botley, Old Bursledon, Bursledon Windmill, Gaters Mill, Hamble-le-Rice, Netley Abbey and Orchards Way. The railway streets of the town centre are not among them. Even so, listed buildings and flats have their own controls, so check with the council before replacing windows if either applies to your home.
How far do you travel to Eastleigh?
Eastleigh is about 55 miles by road from our workshop in Fifield, near Windsor, typically an hour or a little more via the M3. We have no Eastleigh office. Our own surveyors and installers travel down, and we plan visits in advance so that surveys run to time and fitters arrive with every frame and part needed for the job.
Are aluminium windows right for a Victorian terrace in Eastleigh?
They can be an excellent fit. Our Reynaers SlimLine 68 casement has slim frames that suit the narrow fronts of railway-era terraces and let in plenty of light. Aluminium windows start from £400 each. If budget is tight, UPVC in the Selecta Advance 70 system is the alternative, and we can show both at the free survey.
How long will I wait for new windows in Eastleigh?
Lead times start from 10 days after you order for aluminium windows made in our own Fifield workshop. Bifold doors, sliding doors, special colours and conservatories usually take longer. Because we travel from Fifield, we will agree the fitting date with you well in advance and confirm it nearer the time.
