Victorian streets built over market gardens

Most of Fulham’s housing went up from the 1870s, when rows of terraced houses spread over former market gardens and the grounds of large private estates. The Peterborough Estate near Parsons Green took its name from Peterborough House, which was demolished to make way for it. Sands End was industrial land reclaimed from marsh, and its deserted riverside became the site of large modern schemes, starting with Chelsea Harbour in the 1980s and continuing to Imperial Wharf.

Hammersmith has Georgian houses along the riverside around The Mall and St Peter’s Square, and Victorian streets around Brook Green, Ravenscourt Park and Shepherd’s Bush. The council built several estates before and after the Second World War, most visibly on the eastern side of West Kensington. Further north, the London County Council began the White City Estate in the late 1930s, finishing 23 blocks before the war and the rest after it.

Conservation areas and Article 4 directions

Hammersmith and Fulham Council has 44 conservation areas, plus two more in the north, Grand Union Canal and Cumberland Park Factory, which fall within the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation’s area. Names include Barons Court, Bishops Park, Brook Green, Central Fulham, Hurlingham, Parsons Green, Queen’s Club Gardens, Ravenscourt and Starch Green, Sands End, St Peter’s Square, The Mall and Walham Grove.

The council’s published list shows Article 4 directions in many of these areas, among them St Peter’s Square, The Mall, Brook Green, Hurlingham, Bishops Park, Ravenscourt and Starch Green, Parsons Green, Queen’s Club Gardens and Fulham Park Gardens. An Article 4 direction removes some permitted development rights, so work that would otherwise be allowed may need an application. Design guidance for every conservation area is in the council’s Planning Guidance SPD. If you are in one of these areas, or in a flat, which has no householder permitted development rights, check with Hammersmith and Fulham Council before ordering. Our planning permission guide explains the process.

Which of our products fit which homes

Fulham and Hammersmith terraces. Front elevations in conservation areas are the most sensitive. Where originals must be kept, secondary glazing improves comfort without changing the outside; we do not make timber windows. At the rear, and where the council agrees, slim aluminium windows such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement, or Cortizo and Alunet, work well.

Kitchen extensions. If you have, or are planning, a rear or side-return extension, glass is where it pays off. Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors give wide panes of glass, and Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold doors fold right back. Roof lanterns brighten flat extension roofs.

Estates, maisonettes and newer flats. Our UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system are an economical replacement, subject to landlord or freeholder consent. Front doors can be upgraded to a composite door.

We also build conservatories, orangeries and porches, and fit garage doors, fascias, soffits, guttering, blinds and shutters.

Areas we cover in the borough

We work in Fulham, Parsons Green, Sands End, Hammersmith, Brook Green, Ravenscourt Park, Shepherd’s Bush, White City, West Kensington and Barons Court. Next door, see our pages for Kensington and Chelsea, Ealing and Wandsworth, or our West London windows and doors hub.

How we handle a job here

A surveyor visits from Fifield, measures each opening and checks parking and access, which can be tight on busy residential streets. We bring samples, as there is no showroom other than our Fifield base. Aluminium windows start from £400; the double glazing cost guide explains how a full-house price is built up. Lead times start from 10 days, and our own installers fit, seal and clear away. Work comes with a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner with Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Fulham house covered by an Article 4 direction?

It may be. Hammersmith and Fulham Council's published list shows Article 4 directions in many conservation areas, including Parsons Green, Hurlingham, Bishops Park and Fulham Park Gardens, and on some individual streets. These remove certain permitted development rights. Check your address with the council's planning team before choosing new windows or doors.

Can I fit sliding doors on a Fulham kitchen extension?

Yes, rear and side-return extensions are a good place for Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifolds. Whether the extension itself needs permission depends on its size and on whether you are in a conservation area. Check with Hammersmith and Fulham Council, and we can supply door details for your application.

How far are you from Hammersmith and Fulham?

We are based at Fifield, near Windsor. Hammersmith is roughly 22 miles by road via the M4 and A4, usually 45 minutes to an hour, with Fulham a little further. That makes it one of the easier parts of inner London for us to reach, and we can often offer a range of survey dates.

Can I replace windows in my White City or West Kensington flat?

Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so new windows usually need planning permission. If you are a leaseholder, your freeholder or council landlord must normally agree too, and estates may set a standard design. We can measure and provide a specification for your application. Check with the council and your landlord first.

Do you make timber sash windows for Hammersmith period houses?

No, we do not make timber windows or doors. If you want to keep original timber sashes, our secondary glazing fits inside them to reduce draughts and noise. For a timber look elsewhere, woodgrain-finish UPVC or aluminium, or a composite front door, are the options we offer. Check conservation area rules with the council.
