A New Town built neighbourhood by neighbourhood
Hemel Hempstead was designated a New Town in February 1947 to rehouse families from bombed-out London, and the first new residents arrived in 1949. Geoffrey Jellicoe’s idea was “a city in a park”, and the town was built as a series of neighbourhoods, each with its own era:
- Adeyfield, the first New Town district, on the hill east of the Old Town;
- Bennetts End, begun in 1951, and Warners End, from 1953;
- Highfield and Gadebridge, the latter a later 1960s development;
- Grovehill, started in 1967 near the northern edge.
Many of these post-war houses have plain, generous window openings and have already had at least one round of replacement windows. When owners come to us they are usually choosing between a like-for-like UPVC upgrade and aluminium for slimmer frames and a more contemporary look, often with a new front door at the same time.
The Old Town, Boxmoor and the older villages
Older Hemel survives too. The Old Town High Street was left largely intact during the New Town rebuild and is a conservation area, designated in 1968, with around 60 listed buildings including the Grade I Church of St Mary and the Charter Tower. Boxmoor grew up after the London and Birmingham Railway opened its station in 1837, and its Victorian family houses near the station and the Box Moor Trust meadows remain in demand. Apsley and Nash Mills have their roots in milling and paper-making beside the River Gade, while Leverstock Green was a village before the New Town arrived.
Planning and Dacorum Borough Council
Dacorum Borough Council handles planning for the town and has 25 conservation areas across the borough. Close to Hemel these include the Old Town, Piccotts End and Water End, with others at Winkwell, Potten End and Kings Langley. The Chiltern countryside rises to the north and west of the town. If your home is in a conservation area or is listed, check with Dacorum Borough Council before choosing new windows; their conservation team can advise. For general rules, see our planning permission guide. Flats, including many New Town maisonettes, have no householder permitted development rights, and leaseholders usually need the freeholder’s consent too.
Choosing products for Hemel homes
If you live in a 1950s or 1960s New Town house, UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system are a cost-effective replacement, and Cortizo or Alunet aluminium windows give a sharper finish.
If you have a Victorian house in Boxmoor, Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium windows open outwards like a traditional casement and keep frames narrow against the brickwork.
If you want to open up the garden, we fit Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors and Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold doors.
For the front of the house, composite doors come in many colours and woodgrain effects; we do not make timber doors. We also build conservatories, porches, orangeries and roof lanterns, and supply fascias, soffits and guttering.
Survey and installation from Fifield
Hemel Hempstead is about 21 miles from our workshop as the crow flies and roughly 30 miles by road, typically around 40 to 45 minutes via the M25 and A41 or the M1. We do not have an office or showroom in Hertfordshire; our team travels from Fifield. The survey covers measurements, the condition of the existing frames and sills, colours and hardware. Frames are made in our own workshop with lead times from 10 days, and our fitters install them with a 10-year guarantee. Aluminium windows start from £400; our cost guide breaks down the rest.

Frequently asked questions
Do you replace windows in New Town maisonettes and flats?
Yes, but there are extra steps. Flats and maisonettes have no householder permitted development rights, so planning permission may be needed, and leaseholders usually need written consent from the freeholder, which may be the council or a housing association. Once you have their requirements, we can survey and quote for UPVC or aluminium windows to match.
Is the Hemel Hempstead Old Town a conservation area?
Yes. The Old Town High Street has been a conservation area since 1968 and contains around 60 listed buildings. If you live there, check with Dacorum Borough Council before replacing windows or doors, because changes that are normally permitted on a house may need consent. We are happy to work to the council's requirements.
What is the best window for a 1950s Adeyfield or Bennetts End house?
There is no single answer, but most owners choose between UPVC on the Selecta Advance 70 system, which keeps costs down, and aluminium for slimmer frames and more glass. Reynaers SlimLine 68 is our core aluminium range. We bring samples to the survey so you can see both in your own window openings.
How long does an installation in Hemel take to arrange?
After the survey and order, our aluminium frames are made in our own Fifield workshop with lead times from 10 days. We then agree installation dates with you. Most whole-house window jobs are fitted over a small number of days by our own team, who travel up from Fifield, roughly 40 to 45 minutes away.
Do you fit sliding doors in Boxmoor Victorian houses?
Yes. Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 aluminium sliding doors are a popular choice for the back of Victorian houses, giving large glass panels and slim frames. If the opening needs widening, a builder and building regulations approval may be needed. We check the structure and access at the survey before giving you a fixed quote.
