A harbour town at the mouth of the Arun

Littlehampton grew as a small port where the River Arun meets the sea, then as a Victorian and Edwardian resort along the front and the East Beach. You can still trace both stories in the housing. Near the river and the harbour are older cottages and Victorian terraces; along the seafront and the roads behind it sit larger Victorian and Edwardian houses and terraces, some of them now flats. Inland, Wick and the estates towards Lyminster were built up through the twentieth century with semis, terraced houses and bungalows, and newer developments continue on the edges of town.

Arun District Council and the two conservation areas

Arun District Council is the planning authority. Littlehampton has two conservation areas: Littlehampton (Seafront) and Littlehampton (River Road). If your home is in either, or is a listed building, check with Arun District Council before changing windows or doors, particularly on elevations facing the street or the sea. The council publishes conservation area maps, so it is quick to confirm whether your road falls inside either boundary. For houses elsewhere, our replacement windows planning guide explains when permission is normally needed. Flats in converted seafront houses have no householder permitted development rights and usually need the freeholder’s consent as well.

Living with wind and salt

Homes on the front and around the harbour mouth take the full force of south-westerly weather. Frames that cannot rot, whether aluminium or UPVC, are a sensible choice here, and a quick rinse of salt from glass, seals and hardware every few months keeps them working well. Outward-opening casements such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 are worth considering on exposed elevations, because wind pressure pushes the sash against its seals.

Our surveyor also checks the details that matter most near the sea: the condition of the brickwork around each opening, how water drains away from door thresholds, and whether existing cills are sound enough to keep. Those checks shape the quotation, so there are no surprises on installation day. On bungalows, where every window faces the weather at low level, we look closely at how each frame will be sealed.

Getting from Fifield to Littlehampton

We have no office on the Sussex coast. Our only base is Coningsby Farm in Fifield, roughly 65 miles from Littlehampton by road, usually around an hour and a half via the A3 and A29 or the M25 and A24. Because of that distance, we plan surveys and installation days in advance and organise each visit so the job is completed efficiently.

At the survey we measure every opening and go through frame styles, colours and glass, then send a written quotation. Our double glazing cost guide shows what affects the price. Once you accept, frames are built in our workshop and our fitters travel down to install them.

Frequently asked questions

Does Littlehampton have conservation areas?

Yes. Arun District Council has designated two in the town: Littlehampton (Seafront) and Littlehampton (River Road). If your home is inside either boundary, or is listed, check with Arun District Council before replacing windows or doors, especially on the front of the building. Most homes in Wick and the inland estates are outside these areas.

What windows are best for a Littlehampton seafront home?

Rot-proof frames are the sensible start, so aluminium or UPVC both suit the coast. Aluminium gives slimmer frames for large bays and sea-view rooms. Outward-opening casements such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 press against their seals in strong wind. Rinsing salt off frames and hardware a few times a year keeps everything working smoothly.

Can I replace windows in my Littlehampton flat?

Usually, with approvals. Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, so planning permission can be needed, particularly in the Seafront or River Road conservation areas. Most leases also require the freeholder's written consent before windows change. Our surveyor can supply drawings and product details to support both requests.

How far do you travel to Littlehampton?

Littlehampton is roughly 65 miles from our Fifield workshop by road, usually around an hour and a half. We have no local branch, so the surveyor and installers travel from Fifield on dates agreed in advance. Planning visits this way means the team arrives with everything needed to finish the work.

What is the lead time for new windows in Littlehampton?

Lead times start from 10 days after survey and order confirmation, because we make aluminium frames in our own workshop. Larger orders, special colours or conservatories take longer. As Littlehampton is a longer journey, the installation day is booked in advance with you, and we will confirm the date in writing.
