How Walton was built

Walton started as a riverside village in the north of the parish, around Church Street and Bridge Street. The railway changed everything: the population rose from about 4,000 in 1851 to more than 19,000 by 1911, and suburban streets spread south across the old manors towards the station, Walton Heath, Burwood and Hersham. In 1920 the Ashley Park estate was broken up and its grounds divided into building plots. The town centre was rebuilt in the 1960s and later redeveloped as The Heart, which added around 280 flats. Across the river, the current Walton Bridge to Shepperton opened in 2013, replacing earlier crossings.

If you own one of those apartments, or any flat, remember that flats have no householder permitted development rights. Window changes may need planning permission and almost always need consent from the freeholder or managing agent, and many blocks set a standard frame colour and style.

Today suburban streets dominate. Roughly 28 per cent of homes are detached and about 23 per cent are flats, with Walton Central having the most flats and Walton North the most terraced and semi-detached houses. In short, Walton has everything from Victorian villas to 1930s semis, large post-war detached houses and modern apartments.

Old Walton and the conservation areas

Elmbridge Borough Council handles planning. Walton has two conservation areas: Walton (Church Street and Bridge Street), around the historic junction and the Grade I listed St Mary’s Church, and Walton (Riverside), the small area known as Old Walton that includes the Grade I listed Manor House. Hersham Village is a separate conservation area just to the south. If you live in any of these, in a listed building, or in a flat, check with Elmbridge Borough Council before changing windows or doors. From 1 April 2027 Elmbridge becomes part of the new East Surrey Council. Our planning permission page explains the general rules.

Our suggestions by house type

Victorian and Edwardian villas near the station. Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium windows are an outward-opening casement with slim sightlines that respect a period elevation. Cortizo and Alunet systems give further style choices.

Interwar and post-war semis. UPVC windows on Selecta Advance 70 balance cost and performance, with woodgrain or coloured finishes if white feels too stark.

Larger detached homes in Ashley Park, Burwood Park and towards Oatlands. Big rear elevations suit Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors, often with a roof lantern or an orangery.

Front doors everywhere. A composite door is strong, secure and low-maintenance. We do not make timber doors or windows, but woodgrain composite and UPVC give a similar look.

By the Thames

The streets nearest the river and Walton Bridge are the most exposed to damp air and, in places, flood risk; check the Environment Agency flood map for your postcode. Powder-coated aluminium copes well near water, and we pay attention to door thresholds on lower-lying plots. Traffic on the main roads leading to the bridge is another reason some owners ask for acoustic glass on street-facing rooms.

Price, lead times and guarantee

Aluminium windows start from £400. Because we fabricate in Fifield, lead times start from 10 days. All installations carry a 10-year guarantee. For a breakdown of what affects the total, see the double glazing cost guide.

Survey, make, fit

Our surveyor drives over from Fifield, measures each opening, checks access and parking and talks you through the options. You get a fixed written quote. Once you approve it, we make the frames in our own workshop and our fitters install them, clear away the old frames and leave everything clean.

Beyond Walton we work in Hersham, Oatlands, Burwood Park, Whiteley Village and Shepperton. Neighbouring pages include Weybridge, Molesey and Esher, and our Surrey windows and doors hub.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Walton home in a conservation area?

Walton has two: Church Street and Bridge Street, around St Mary's Church, and Riverside, known as Old Walton. Hersham Village is another nearby. Elmbridge Borough Council publishes maps of each. Check with the council, which becomes part of East Surrey Council from April 2027, before changing windows in these areas.

Can you fit large sliding doors in Ashley Park or Burwood Park?

Yes. Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors suit wide openings on larger detached houses, with big glass panels and slim frames. We survey the opening, check the structure above and access for delivery, then recommend a panel layout. Bifold doors from Smart Visofold or Cortizo are another option.

How long will I wait for new windows in Walton?

Lead times start from 10 days from order, because we make our aluminium frames ourselves at Fifield. Larger sliding doors, special colours or big orders can take longer. Your quote will give a realistic date, and the fitting itself usually takes a few days for a typical house.

Do you have a showroom in Walton-on-Thames?

No. Our only premises are our workshop and office at Coningsby Farm, Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 18 miles from Walton by road. We bring samples to the survey, and you are welcome to visit Fifield by appointment to see frames being made.

What does double glazing cost for a Walton semi?

It depends on how many windows you have, their sizes, whether you choose UPVC or aluminium, and the glass specification. Our aluminium windows start from £400 each. A free survey gives you an itemised written quote. Every installation comes with a 10-year guarantee.
