Alfred’s town at the foot of the Downs
Wantage is where King Alfred was born in 849, and his statue still stands in the Market Place, where markets are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The town was in Berkshire until 1974 and is now in the Vale of White Horse. The Letcombe Brook, a chalk stream, runs through the centre, and the North Wessex Downs National Landscape rises to the south.
The Wantage Neighbourhood Plan describes a town made up mostly of two- to two-and-a-half-storey semi-detached homes, with a historic core of brick, render, clay tile, slate and stone. Around that core you will find older terraces and cottages, twentieth-century estates, and several recent developments, including housing on greenfield land beside the A338 and on brownfield sites near the brook. Grove, just to the north, has large housing plans of its own and shares the same roads.
Two conservation areas, and Charlton
Vale of White Horse District Council has designated two conservation areas here: Wantage Town Centre and Wantage Charlton. The neighbourhood plan sets out expectations for materials and scale in both. If your home sits in either, or is listed, check with Vale of White Horse District Council before you replace windows or doors. We do not make timber windows, and we would rather tell you that at the start than fit something that causes a problem later. Our planning permission guide covers the general rules for houses outside conservation areas.
Matching our products to Wantage homes
Older cottages and town houses. Outside the conservation areas, our aluminium windows give you slim, strong frames. The Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement is our core range, with Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows as alternatives.
Semi-detached family houses. This is the most common house type in the town, and UPVC windows and doors in the Selecta Advance 70 system suit them well. Add a composite front door for security and a timber look without the painting.
New-build homes. Recent houses rarely need new windows, but owners often want a better link to the garden. Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding patio doors, Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold doors, and conservatories or orangeries are all options. Check your estate’s covenants first.
Homes near the Letcombe Brook. If your property is low-lying, mention it at the survey so we can look carefully at door thresholds.
Fitting day
On the day, our own installers remove the old frames and fit the new ones opening by opening, working from the measurements taken at your survey. We agree the date with you well in advance, and we talk you through the handles, locks and opening settings before we go, so you know how everything works. The people who fit your windows are the same company that made them, so any question goes straight back to us.
Wantage was part of Berkshire until 1974. Our Berkshire double glazing page covers the county where our Fifield workshop sits.
Villages we cover
We also quote in Grove, Charlton, East Hendred, Letcombe Regis, Letcombe Bassett and Childrey. Several of these villages have their own conservation areas, so the same advice applies: check with the council first. For other nearby towns, see Didcot, Abingdon and Swindon.

Frequently asked questions
Is my Wantage home in a conservation area?
Vale of White Horse District Council has two conservation areas in the town: Wantage Town Centre and Wantage Charlton. Nearby villages such as Grove, Letcombe Regis, Letcombe Bassett and Childrey also have their own. The council's online maps show the boundaries. If you are inside one, check with the council before changing windows or doors.
How far is Wantage from your workshop?
Our workshop is at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor. Wantage is roughly 45 miles away by road, usually around an hour's drive using the M4 and A34. We have no local showroom, so we bring samples to your free survey, and the same team returns to fit your windows and doors.
What windows suit a semi-detached house in Wantage?
Most semis suit either UPVC or aluminium. Our Selecta Advance 70 UPVC windows are good value and come in white or woodgrain. For slimmer frames and more glass, the Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium casement is our core product. A survey lets you compare samples of both in your own rooms.
Can you replace the patio doors on a new-build in Grove?
Yes. We fit Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors and Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold doors. On newer estates, check your title deeds or management company rules for any covenants about external changes before you order. Our surveyor will measure the opening and explain whether any structural work is needed.
How much does double glazing cost in Wantage?
Our aluminium windows start from £400. The total depends on the number of windows, their size, opening style, colour and glass. Doors, bifolds and conservatories are priced individually. We give a fixed written quote after a free survey, so you know the full cost before deciding anything.
