We are a Berkshire company working from Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor. Building for a north-facing coast

Whitstable looks north across the Thames Estuary and the Swale, and in winter the wind off the water is cold and full of salt. Front windows on Marine Parade, Island Wall or the Tankerton seafront get the worst of it. Low-lying parts of town, particularly towards Seasalter, have flooded in the past, notably in 1953. For window buyers this means two things: choose frames and hardware that will not corrode or stiffen in salt air, and insist on careful sealing at the sill, where wind-driven rain gets in first.

Whitstable homes, from net lofts to 1930s semis

The old town is a tight grid of small fishermen’s cottages, weatherboarded houses and alleys running down to the beach, with Victorian terraces behind. Tankerton, on the slopes to the east, has larger Edwardian and interwar houses looking over the water. Seasalter has bungalows and chalets close to the marshes, while Swalecliffe and Chestfield are mostly twentieth-century suburbs, with post-war and later estates filling the land around the town.

Weatherboarded cottages are a case where the look matters. We do not make timber windows, so the realistic options are a slim aluminium casement or a woodgrain-finish frame chosen to suit the elevation, and in a conservation area that choice needs checking with the council first.

Holiday lets and second homes are common in Whitstable too. If the property is let, tell us at the start so we can plan the survey and the fitting days around bookings, and so the quote reflects any access arrangements. For a house that stands empty for part of the year, multi-point locking on doors and secure, lockable window handles are worth specifying, and a composite front door gives a strong, low-maintenance entrance that will not need repainting after a winter of salt spray.

Conservation areas and who decides

Whitstable is in the Canterbury district, so Canterbury City Council handles planning. Conservation areas here include Whitstable Town, Tankerton, Church Street, and the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway at the old station. If your house is listed, inside one of these areas or a flat, check with Canterbury City Council before you commit, and remember flats have no householder permitted development rights. Our replacement windows planning guide covers the basics.

What we make and fit

Neighbourhoods we travel to

We cover the whole of Whitstable, including Tankerton, Seasalter, Swalecliffe, Chestfield and Yorkletts. Along the coast see our page on double glazing in Herne Bay, and inland Canterbury and Faversham. The Kent hub page lists everywhere else we work in the county.

The survey and fit, step by step

Because Whitstable is a long drive, we plan the survey for a day when we are already in north Kent. The surveyor measures each opening, looks at the state of sills and reveals, and notes which elevations take the weather. You get a written quote; aluminium windows start from Β£400, and the cost guide explains the variables. Once you approve, aluminium frames are fabricated in our workshop with lead times from 10 days. Our own fitters then come down with the full order, remove the old frames, fit and seal the new ones, and clear up. Bigger jobs run over consecutive days.

All installations carry a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and hold Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a local office in Whitstable?

No. Our only workshop and office are at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor. Whitstable is roughly 85 miles away by road, about an hour and three quarters' drive, so our own surveyors and fitters travel from Fifield and we plan each visit in advance around the journey.

Can I replace the windows of a weatherboarded cottage in Whitstable's old town?

Often, but check first. The old town is within the Whitstable Town conservation area, and some cottages are listed. Canterbury City Council can tell you whether consent is needed. We do not make timber windows, so the options are slim aluminium, woodgrain-finish frames, or secondary glazing where originals must stay.

Which windows last best facing the sea in Tankerton?

Powder-coated aluminium is very durable in salt air and gives slim frames for wide views. Good-quality UPVC also performs well. On exposed seafront elevations the hardware specification and the quality of sealing around the frame are what keep the window working and watertight over the years.

Is my Whitstable home in a conservation area?

Canterbury City Council has designated several in Whitstable, including Whitstable Town, Tankerton, Church Street and the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway area at the old station. The council's planning pages or its planning team can confirm whether your address falls inside a boundary and what that means for windows.

How quickly can you fit new windows in Whitstable?

Aluminium windows are fabricated in our workshop with lead times from 10 days after you approve the order. Because Whitstable is a long drive from Fifield, we book the installation on a date that suits you and fits our planned trips to north Kent.
