Designing for Marlow gardens

Garden sizes and shapes vary a lot across Marlow. Some houses near the centre have long, narrow plots. Suburban semis tend to have more regular rectangular gardens. On the slopes towards Marlow Bottom and Marlow Common, the ground can fall away quite sharply. We also build in Little Marlow, Bisham and Medmenham. Before suggesting a shape, we look at which way the garden faces, how the room will be used and where the doors from the house sit.

Which conservatory shape?

Roof choices for comfort all year

The roof makes the biggest difference to how comfortable a conservatory is. A solid roof conservatory is insulated, quieter in heavy rain and easier to heat. A glass roof conservatory with modern solar-control glass stays bright and keeps glare in check. Polycarbonate is still the lightest and simplest roof, though it is the least effective at controlling temperature. If you have an older conservatory with a polycarbonate roof, look at our replacement conservatory roofs. We can usually keep the frames and replace just the roof. For a more solid feel, an orangery combines brick piers with a roof lantern. A small front porch is another project we often build.

Colours and doors to the garden

White is a classic choice. Woodgrain foils give a softer look, and a dual-colour frame lets you have grey outside and white inside. For the garden opening, choose between uPVC French doors, a sliding patio door and aluminium bifolds from the Smart Visofold or Cortizo ranges. If you prefer aluminium for the whole room, see our aluminium windows and doors in Marlow page.

Bases on sloping and riverside plots

Marlow Town Council notes that flood risk limits building in the southern part of the town by the river. Higher up, the issue is more often a sloping garden. Either way, the conservatory base is designed for the specific site, with the floor level, drainage and footings decided before the frames are made.

Planning rules and Building Regulations

The Planning Portal sets out the permitted development limits for a single-storey conservatory:

Rules are stricter in conservation areas such as central Marlow and Little Marlow. Check with Buckinghamshire Council before going ahead. You can find more in our guide to planning permission for conservatories and porches.

Building Regulations normally do not apply if the conservatory:

If the plan involves cutting a new opening through the back wall of the house, that part of the work still needs approval.

What affects the cost

Floor area, roof type, base work and the doors you choose all affect the price. Our conservatory cost guide explains each factor. If your house windows need replacing too, see uPVC windows and doors in Marlow. We also build conservatories in Bourne End, Cookham and Maidenhead.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Marlow home covered by permitted development for a conservatory?

Most houses outside conservation areas have permitted development rights for a modest single-storey conservatory within the size limits. However, flats do not have them, and some estates have conditions removing them. In central Marlow or Little Marlow, check with Buckinghamshire Council. We can help you find out whether a planning condition applies to your property.

Can a conservatory be built on a sloping Marlow garden?

Yes. On a slope, we design the base with stepped footings or a raised floor so the conservatory sits level with the house. On some plots, a few steps down to the garden become part of the design. The survey is where we measure the fall and plan the base properly.

Which roof is best for a south-facing conservatory in Marlow?

A south-facing room gets a lot of sun, so a solid roof or solar-control glass is usually the best choice. A solid roof with one or two glazed panels or a lantern still lets in good light while keeping summer heat down. Polycarbonate is the least effective option facing south.

Do you build orangeries in Marlow?

Yes. An orangery uses brick or rendered piers and a flat perimeter roof with a central lantern. It feels more like a proper extension than a fully glazed conservatory. Orangeries suit many of Marlow's brick houses. They follow similar planning limits, so we will talk through permitted development and Building Regulations at the design stage.

Are bifold doors available on a uPVC conservatory?

Yes. We can fit aluminium bifolds from the Smart Visofold or Cortizo ranges as the garden opening on a uPVC conservatory. If you prefer a simpler or more affordable option, uPVC French doors and sliding patio doors are also available. All of them come in colours that match the frames.
