uPVC Conservatories in Old Windsor

We design and build uPVC conservatories in Old Windsor, from compact lean-tos on post-war semis to large Victorian and Edwardian designs on detached houses, and we also fit orangeries, porches and replacement conservatory roofs. Our fitters set out from Fifield, about 5 miles off in a straight line and typically a quarter of an hour or a little more by road. Each build is backed by a 10-year guarantee.

Garden rooms in a green, riverside parish

With about 93% of the parish in the Green Belt and Windsor Great Park on the doorstep, this is a village where people like to look out at trees and open ground. Many of the estate homes off Kingsbury Drive, Meadow Way and Ashbrook Road have long gardens that suit a conservatory across the back. Older properties near Burfield Road and The Moor often have room for something more generous.

Choosing a conservatory style

Small conservatories make a breakfast nook or reading spot; large ones can hold a family kitchen table. The main conservatories page shows the full range of shapes.

Roofs that work in every season

A glass roof lets in the most light, and modern solar-control units avoid much of the glare older designs suffered. Polycarbonate roofs are lighter in weight but noisier in heavy rain. Solid roof conservatories with an insulated, tiled finish feel more like an extension and stay comfortable through the winter. Read more about glass roof conservatories if light matters most to you.

Heathrow traffic passes low over neighbouring Windsor, and a solid roof feels noticeably quieter under passing aircraft. If your current conservatory roasts in July and chills in January, replacement conservatory roofs let you keep the frames and base and change only the roof.

Orangeries and porches

An orangery mixes brick piers, a perimeter flat roof and a central roof lantern, so it reads as part of the house rather than an add-on. We also build porches, a handy addition to semis where the front door opens straight into the living room.

Planning permission and Building Regulations

A conservatory follows the same planning rules as any single-storey extension. Under permitted development, a rear conservatory may project up to 3 metres beyond the original rear wall of a semi or terrace, or 4 metres on a detached house, with a maximum height of 4 metres. Within 2 metres of a boundary the eaves cannot exceed 3 metres, and all extensions together must cover no more than half the land around the original house. Inside the Old Windsor Conservation Area, side extensions need full planning permission, and the larger prior-approval depths are not available. Flats and maisonettes sit outside these householder rights altogether. Check with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, and see our guide to planning permission for conservatories and porches.

Building Regulations do not normally apply if the conservatory is single storey, at ground level, under 30 square metres, separated from the house by external-quality walls, doors or windows, and heated independently with its own controls, as long as the glazing and electrics comply. Knocking through a new opening between conservatory and house is the exception, as that work still needs approval.

Parts of the village by the Thames lie in the floodplain, so we take particular care over the conservatory base, its damp-proofing and the finished floor level.

Colours and doors to the garden

White frames are traditional, but woodgrain foils and dual-colour finishes, such as grey outside and white inside, suit newer homes well. To reach the garden, choose uPVC French doors, a patio door, or an aluminium bifold from the Smart Visofold or Cortizo ranges.

Costs and nearby areas

Our conservatory cost guide explains what shapes a quote, from roof type to groundwork. We also build in Wraysbury, Datchet and Windsor, and our Old Windsor windows and doors page covers replacement glazing for the rest of the house.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Old Windsor home in the conservation area?

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead publishes a map of the Old Windsor Conservation Area on its website. If your home falls inside the boundary, side conservatories need planning permission and the council may take more interest in materials. If you are unsure, check with the Royal Borough before you settle on a design.

Can you build a conservatory on a floodplain property?

In most cases, yes. Being in a flood zone does not stop a conservatory, but the base needs proper damp-proofing and sensible floor levels. Our surveyor will ask whether your garden has flooded before and look at drainage. Where a full planning application is needed, the council may also ask for a flood risk assessment.

Should I choose a glass or solid roof?

A glass roof brings in the most light and suits a room used mainly in spring and autumn. A solid, insulated roof makes the space feel like an extension, keeps it cooler in summer and quieter under rain and passing aircraft. Many Old Windsor owners with ageing conservatories now choose a solid roof replacement.

How long does a conservatory take to build?

It depends on size and groundwork. The base comes first, then the frames, roof and glazing are fitted, and many builds take a couple of weeks on site once materials arrive. Our product lead times begin at 10 days. We will give you a realistic programme after the free survey.

Can I have bifold doors on a uPVC conservatory?

Yes. Many people fit an aluminium bifold from the Smart Visofold or Cortizo ranges into the garden side of a uPVC conservatory, giving a wide opening onto the patio. French doors and patio doors in uPVC are the alternatives. We will check the opening and roof structure at survey to suit your choice.
