Double Glazing in Guildford: Aluminium & UPVC Windows and Doors

Guildford is roughly eighteen miles from our workshop at Fifield as the crow flies. It is a regular run for our team, who travel down from near Windsor to survey, and later to fit frames we have made ourselves. There is no Guildford branch; there is a small, hands-on business that does the whole job end to end.

A town of many periods

Guildford’s historic centre on the slopes above the River Wey has buildings spanning several centuries, and the town spread outwards in distinct phases. Charlotteville and Warren Road, to the east of the centre, is a Victorian residential area where doors, windows and chimneys are singled out as part of its character. Onslow Village, to the west, was begun in 1921 as a garden suburb inspired by Ebenezer Howard’s Garden City movement, with rendered or red-brick houses, steep clay-tiled roofs and small-paned windows. Beyond these, suburbs such as Merrow and Burpham bring a broad mix of twentieth-century family homes.

Conservation areas and Article 4 Directions

Guildford Borough Council lists forty conservation areas, from the town centre and Bridge Street to villages such as Shalford, Shere, Compton and Ripley, plus the Wey and Godalming Navigations. Seven of them have confirmed Article 4 Directions: Waterden Road, Charlotteville and Warren Road, East Clandon, St Catherine’s, Shere, the Town Centre and Onslow Village. In those areas, replacing windows or doors that face a road or open space generally needs planning permission.

We want to be upfront about this. The council’s character appraisal for Onslow Village prefers repair of the original timber windows, and describes UPVC and colour-coated aluminium as inappropriate there. If you live in Onslow Village or another controlled area, please check with Guildford Borough Council before you spend money on a quotation from anyone, including us. From 1 April 2027 that responsibility passes to the new West Surrey council.

Villages and towns around Guildford

Homes close to the River Wey deserve a mention too. The Wey and Godalming Navigations is itself a conservation area running through the borough, so a riverside house or converted building along the towpath is worth checking with Guildford Borough Council before you change anything visible from the water. On these properties we pay extra attention to how frames will look from the river side as well as the road.

Much of the land south and east of Guildford lies within the Surrey Hills National Landscape, which is another reason to check with the council before changing how a home looks from the outside.

Choosing the right product for a Guildford home

Victorian and Edwardian houses outside Article 4 areas. A slim aluminium casement such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 can give a crisp, narrow frame that respects the proportions of older openings.

Post-war and later homes in Merrow, Burpham and Cranleigh. Here, owners often want warmer rooms and lower maintenance. Aluminium and UPVC are both realistic, and we will set out the differences in cost and appearance.

Garden-facing extensions. Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors and Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds work well where hillside gardens and views are the point.

Front doors. Composite doors suit most house types outside controlled areas.

From survey to finished installation

Your survey covers measurements, the condition of each opening and any lintel or structural issues, which matter on some older Guildford houses. We send a written quote with prices from £400, depending on the specification. Aluminium frames are fabricated at Fifield with a lead time starting from 10 days. Our installers then drive down, fit and seal the new frames, tidy up and remove the old ones. Your guarantee lasts 10 years.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace my windows in Onslow Village?

Onslow Village is a conservation area with an Article 4 Direction, so replacing front-facing windows generally needs planning permission. The council’s appraisal favours repairing original timber windows and describes UPVC and colour-coated aluminium as inappropriate. Check with Guildford Borough Council first. We would rather you know this before asking us to quote.

Which Guildford conservation areas have Article 4 Directions?

According to Guildford Borough Council, seven do: Waterden Road, Charlotteville and Warren Road, East Clandon, St Catherine’s, Shere, the Town Centre and Onslow Village. In these areas, changes to windows and doors facing a road or open space usually need permission. Always confirm with the council, as designations can change.

Do you cover Godalming and Cranleigh as well as Guildford?

Yes. We work across Guildford and nearby areas including Merrow, Burpham, Shalford, Godalming and Cranleigh. Godalming and Cranleigh fall under Waverley Borough Council rather than Guildford, so planning questions there go to Waverley until the new West Surrey council takes over in April 2027.

How far away are you from Guildford?

Our workshop is at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor, roughly eighteen miles from Guildford as the crow flies and further by road. We do not have a local office. Our surveyor comes to you, and our own fitters make the trip on installation days, so the same business handles the job from start to finish.

Are aluminium sliding doors a good choice for a hillside Guildford garden?

They can be, especially where you want wide, uninterrupted views. We fit Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors and Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds. Sloping gardens may need extra thought about thresholds, steps and drainage, which we check at survey. We will recommend the option that suits the opening and the way you use the space.
