Double Glazing in Chatham: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Inspired Glazing supplies and installs double glazing in Chatham: aluminium windows and doors fabricated in our own workshop, UPVC windows, composite doors, bifolds and conservatories. Our base is at Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 72 miles from Chatham by road, which is typically around an hour and a half to an hour and three quarters depending on the M25. We have no office in Kent. Our own fitters make the trip, and we schedule Chatham surveys and fitting days in advance so nothing is left to chance.

Chatham’s housing, from the river up

Chatham was built by the Royal Navy. For centuries the dockyard drove the town, and the streets climbing the steep valley sides were filled with Victorian terraces for the people who worked there. Those terraces, many with bay windows and small front gardens, still make up much of central Chatham and Luton. The higher ground to the south then filled in during the twentieth century: Walderslade and Lordswood are largely post-war and later estates of semis, detached houses and bungalows, and Princes Park followed. Down by the water, St Mary’s Island and Chatham Maritime added modern homes and flats on former dockyard land.

Each layer needs something different. A hillside terrace usually wants slim frames and proportions that suit the facade. A 1970s Lordswood semi often just wants efficient, low-maintenance replacements for old frames. A riverside flat brings questions about freeholders and management companies before anyone gets a tape measure out.

The hills are worth mentioning too. Some Chatham streets are steep enough that access, parking and carrying large glazed units up front steps need thinking about before the fitting day. We check this at the survey, so the installation team knows exactly what to expect and can bring the right equipment for your street.

Conservation areas and Article 4 in Chatham

Medway Council is the planning authority. Chatham’s conservation areas include New Road Chatham, Maidstone Road Chatham and Chatham Historic Dockyard, with Brompton Lines on the boundary with Gillingham. Medway lists Article 4 directions on dwellings in New Road, Maidstone Road and Brompton, and says that replacing windows and doors on frontages facing a highway or public footpath needs planning permission in those areas. If you live in or near one, check with Medway Council first. Our replacement windows planning guide covers the general position, and we can supply product drawings for an application.

If you own a flat, remember that flats do not have householder permitted development rights. Window changes may need planning permission, and almost always need the freeholder’s written consent.

Frequently asked questions

Does the New Road Article 4 direction affect my windows in Chatham?

If your house is in the New Road, Maidstone Road or Brompton areas, Medway Council's Article 4 directions say that replacing windows and doors on frontages facing a highway or public footpath needs planning permission. Check with Medway Council whether your address is included before you order anything. Rear windows may be treated differently.

What windows suit a Victorian terrace on the hills above Chatham?

Slim aluminium casements such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 often suit Victorian terraces well, because the narrow frames keep the glass area generous. Woodgrain-finish UPVC is a lower-cost alternative. In Article 4 areas, Medway Council may want a closer match to the original, so check first.

How far do your fitters travel to reach Chatham?

Our team travels from our workshop in Fifield, near Windsor. Chatham is roughly 72 miles by road, usually around an hour and a half to an hour and three quarters. Because of the distance, we plan surveys and installations in advance and book fitting days back to back so the job is done in one run.

Can I replace the windows in my St Mary's Island flat?

Possibly, but flats have no householder permitted development rights, so planning permission may be needed, and you will need consent from the freeholder or management company. Many developments also have rules on frame colour and style. Get those answers first and we can then quote to the agreed specification.

How quickly can you fit new windows in Chatham?

Lead times for our aluminium windows start from 10 days once the survey is done and the order is confirmed, because we fabricate them ourselves in Fifield. We then book your installation as a planned visit, and most homes are completed in a single run of consecutive days.
