How Gillingham grew

Gillingham began as a cluster of farms around its parish church, but the dockyard next door changed everything. Because the military lines left little room near the yard, New Brompton grew up beyond them to house dockyard workers, and the town spread along the road from Brompton to the station. The population rose from under 28,000 in 1891 to over 42,500 by 1901, and that burst of building left the long Victorian terraced streets that still define central Gillingham. Older villages, such as Gillingham Green, were swallowed up along the way.

The twentieth century pushed the town south and east. Twydall, Hempstead, Wigmore and Parkwood are largely post-war and later, with semis, detached houses, bungalows and terraces. Rainham, part of the borough since 1928, has an older high street and the hamlet of Lower Rainham near the estuary, surrounded by later estates.

The practical upshot is that two Gillingham homes a mile apart can need very different advice. A bay-fronted terrace off Canterbury Street might have original openings, tight access and a planning question to settle. A 1960s semi in Wigmore is more likely to have tired double glazing from the 1990s, with failed seals and draughty doors, and simply needs a sound, efficient replacement. We tailor the recommendation to the house in front of us, rather than to a brochure.

Check before you change: conservation areas in Gillingham

Medway Council handles planning. The Gillingham side of Medway has a long list of conservation areas: Gillingham Green, Gillingham Park, Railway Street Gillingham, Brompton Lines, Rainham High Street, Lower Rainham, Lower Twydall, Moor Street and Meresborough among them. Gillingham Park and Brompton also have Article 4 directions on dwellings, and Medway’s guidance says replacing windows and doors on frontages that face a highway or public footpath needs planning permission there.

The simplest approach is to check with Medway Council before choosing a style, then let us quote to what is acceptable. Our planning permission guide explains the general rules. Flat owners should note that flats have no householder permitted development rights and usually need freeholder consent.

Good matches for Gillingham properties

Victorian terraces near the station and in Brompton. Slim Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium casements look neat in narrow terraced openings and handle bays well. Cortizo and Alunet are other aluminium options we make.

Post-war semis in Twydall, Hempstead and Wigmore. UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system are popular here, available in white, colours and woodgrain finishes, alongside composite doors. Woodgrain UPVC, aluminium and composite are our timber-look choices, as we do not make timber.

Family homes with gardens in Rainham and Parkwood. Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds, Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, roof lanterns and conservatories or orangeries turn the back of the house into living space.

We also fit porches, garage doors, secondary glazing, fascias, soffits and guttering, and blinds and shutters.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Gillingham house in a conservation area?

Gillingham has several, including Gillingham Green, Gillingham Park, Railway Street, Brompton Lines, Rainham High Street and Lower Rainham. Medway Council publishes maps of each. Gillingham Park and Brompton also have Article 4 directions that bring front window and door replacement under planning control, so check with Medway Council first.

What is the best value double glazing for a Twydall or Hempstead semi?

For most post-war semis, UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system give good thermal performance at a lower cost than aluminium, with little maintenance. If you want slimmer frames or a more modern look, aluminium windows start from £400 each. We will price both after a free survey.

Do you fit bifold doors in Rainham?

Yes. We fit Smart Visofold and Cortizo aluminium bifold doors, and Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors if you prefer large sliding panes. Many Rainham and Parkwood homes have gardens that suit either. We survey the opening, check the lintel, and recommend the option that fits your space and budget.

How do you manage jobs in Gillingham when you are based near Windsor?

We plan ahead. Gillingham is roughly 75 miles from our Fifield workshop by road, so surveys are grouped on Medway days and installations are booked as consecutive days. Our own fitters travel with the finished frames, which we make ourselves, so there are no third-party installers involved.

Can you replace windows in a Victorian terrace without spoiling the look?

Yes, with care. We measure each opening individually and suggest frames with slim sightlines, such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68, or woodgrain UPVC for a softer finish. We can include glazing bars where they suit the house. If the street has an Article 4 direction, Medway Council's view comes first.
