Double Glazing in Cambridge: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

For double glazing in Cambridge, Inspired Glazing makes aluminium windows and doors in its own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, and fits them with its own installation team. We also supply UPVC windows and doors, composite front doors and conservatories. Aluminium windows start from £400, lead times start from 10 days, and every installation carries a 10-year guarantee. We have no Cambridge branch; the team travels up from Fifield for every survey and fit.

A city of terraces, villas and new quarters

Cambridge housing changes sharply from one street to the next. Romsey and Petersfield, either side of Mill Road, are mostly tight Victorian terraces of gault and red brick, many with original bays and narrow front gardens. Chesterton and the De Freville area add larger late Victorian and Edwardian semis and villas. Newnham Croft is a compact pocket of cottages and terraces close to the Backs. Further out sit inter-war and post-war semis in Cherry Hinton and Arbury, and newer quarters such as Eddington, Trumpington Meadows and the CB1 flats near the station, where a lot of homes are leasehold apartments.

That mix means there is no single answer for Cambridge. A Romsey terrace, a 1950s Arbury semi and a Trumpington townhouse each need a different window.

Conservation areas and who decides

Planning for the city is handled by Greater Cambridge Shared Planning, the joint service of Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council. The city has 18 conservation areas with published appraisals, including Mill Road, De Freville, Newnham Croft, New Town and Glisson Road, Castle and Victoria Road, Ferry Lane in Chesterton, Storey’s Way, Trumpington and the Historic Core. Some streets may also be covered by Article 4 directions that bring window changes under planning control.

If your home is in one of these areas, check with Greater Cambridge Shared Planning before you order. Listed buildings always need consent, and flats have no householder permitted development rights, so apartment owners should also ask their freeholder or managing agent. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows explains the questions worth asking.

Matching products to Cambridge homes

Homes near the Cam and its tributaries can sit in mapped flood zones. If that applies to you, mention it at survey so we can look carefully at thresholds and door levels.

Landlords, students and short windows of time

A large share of Cambridge homes are rented, from shared student houses in Romsey to professional lets near the station. Landlords often want replacement windows fitted between tenancies, when the house is empty. Tell us your dates when you enquire and we will work back from them, booking the survey early enough to make the frames in Fifield and fit them before the next tenants move in. If tenants are still living there, we agree access in advance and replace windows one opening at a time.

Villages around the city

We cover the city and nearby villages including Cherry Hinton, Histon and Impington, Girton, Great Shelford and Grantchester. Many of these have their own conservation areas, which are also handled by Greater Cambridge Shared Planning.

How the survey and fit work from Fifield

Cambridge is roughly 80 miles from our workshop by road, typically around an hour and three quarters via the M25 and M11. Because of that journey, surveys and installations for Cambridge are planned in advance and grouped together where we can.

  1. Survey: a surveyor visits, measures every opening and talks through frames, colours and glass.
  2. Quote: you receive a written quote. Our double glazing cost guide shows what affects the price.
  3. Making: aluminium frames are fabricated in Fifield, with lead times from 10 days.
  4. Fitting: our own team drives up and installs, then clears away.

Further afield in the county, we also cover Ely, Newmarket and St Ives.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission to replace windows in a Cambridge conservation area?

Not always, but it depends on the property. Listed buildings need consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and some streets may be covered by an Article 4 direction. Check with Greater Cambridge Shared Planning before ordering, especially in areas such as Mill Road, De Freville or Newnham Croft.

Can you fit windows that look like timber on a Victorian terrace near Mill Road?

We do not make timber windows. For a traditional look we offer woodgrain-finish UPVC or slim aluminium frames in heritage colours. At survey we look at the existing openings and glazing bars and suggest the option most likely to suit the street, then you confirm any planning requirements with the council.

How long does it take to get new windows fitted in Cambridge?

Aluminium windows have lead times from 10 days once the survey is done and the order is confirmed. Because Cambridge is roughly 80 miles from our Fifield workshop, we book the installation date in advance and plan the journey, so allow a little extra time when you are arranging other trades.

Do you install windows in Cambridge flats and apartments?

Yes, subject to the right permissions. Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, and most leases need freeholder or managing agent approval before windows change. We can provide specifications and drawings to support that request. Once approval is in place, we survey, fabricate and fit in the same way as for a house.

What do aluminium windows cost for a Cambridge home?

Our aluminium windows start from £400 per window. The final price depends on size, opening style, colour and glass, so a three-bedroom semi will differ from a small terrace. A free survey gives you a written, itemised quote, and our double glazing cost guide explains the main factors.
