A riverside market town that keeps growing west
The old centre runs back from the 15th-century stone bridge, with Bridge Street, The Broadway and the riverside quays lined by Georgian and Victorian fronts. Beyond it, Needingworth Road has a run of Victorian, Edwardian, Arts and Crafts and inter-war houses in red brick and painted render. The large central belt of the town was built from the 1950s to the 1970s, mostly semi-detached homes in pale and red brick with tile hanging. Burleigh Hill followed in the last two decades of the 20th century, with box bays and mock-Tudor panels, and the western edge around The Spires and Houghton Grange is 21st-century building.
Water, flooding and your door choices
The Great Ouse defines St Ives. Land east of Harrison Way lies in the river floodplain, and the Environment Agency issues flood alerts for the river at St Ives when levels rise. If you live near the river, the Waits or low-lying streets, it is worth telling our surveyor. We will look at thresholds, drainage at door sills and how a new door sits against the existing step, and you can check your flood zone on the government’s flood map.
Conservation areas and planning
St Ives is in Huntingdonshire, so Huntingdonshire District Council handles planning. The historic town centre is a conservation area, Houghton and Wyton has its own, which also covers the newer homes at Houghton Grange, and Hemingford Grey and Hemingford Abbots share the Hemingfords Conservation Area. Listed buildings on Bridge Street and around the bridge need listed building consent for window changes. Check with Huntingdonshire District Council if you are in any of these areas, or in a flat. More background is in our planning guide for replacement windows.
Which products fit which St Ives house
1950s to 1970s semis in the central estates make up a large part of the town. Most suit either UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system or aluminium windows such as Reynaers SlimLine 68, which has slim outward-opening casements.
Late 20th-century homes on Burleigh Hill often have box bays and patio doors from the 1980s or 1990s. Replacing the back doors with Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors transforms the garden side.
Period houses near the centre and on Needingworth Road may want a traditional look. We do not make timber windows, so we offer woodgrain-finish UPVC or slim aluminium in heritage colours instead.
For front doors, our composite doors come in a wide range of colours. Larger plots can take a conservatory, orangery or roof lantern.
Fitting in the old centre
The streets around Bridge Street, The Broadway and the quay are narrow, busy and often short of parking, so we plan town-centre jobs carefully. Before installation day we will ask where our van can stop, whether frames need to go through the house to reach the back, and whether there are shop or flat entrances to keep clear. Homes on the guided busway side of town and around Station Road have their own access quirks, and our surveyor will note them so the fitting day runs smoothly.
Villages we cover
We also work in Hemingford Grey, Hemingford Abbots, Houghton and Wyton, Fenstanton, Needingworth and Holywell. Nearby town pages: Huntingdon, Cambridge and Ely.
Distance and how we plan the work
St Ives is roughly 90 miles from our Fifield workshop by road, typically around two hours via the M25 and A1(M) or M11. We do not have a local office, so surveys and installations here are planned in advance around the journey. The surveyor measures and talks through options, you get a written quote (see our double glazing cost guide), the frames are made in Fifield, and our own fitters come up to install.

Frequently asked questions
My St Ives house is near the river. Can you still fit new doors?
Yes. Homes near the Great Ouse may sit in a flood zone, so we take extra care over thresholds and sill drainage when replacing doors. Tell the surveyor if your property has flooded before. You can check your flood zone on the government's flood map, and we will plan the fitting around the existing step and floor levels.
Do I need permission to replace windows on Bridge Street in St Ives?
Many buildings on and around Bridge Street are listed, which means listed building consent is needed for window changes. The town centre is also a conservation area. Check with Huntingdonshire District Council before ordering. We can provide product details and drawings to support any application you make.
Are aluminium windows a good choice for a 1960s semi in St Ives?
They often are. Aluminium frames are slim and strong, so you get more glass and a clean modern look. The Reynaers SlimLine 68 casement is our core window and suits many post-war semis. If budget is the priority, UPVC on the Selecta Advance 70 system is a good alternative. We price both at survey.
Do you cover the Hemingfords and Houghton?
Yes, we cover Hemingford Grey, Hemingford Abbots, Houghton and Wyton, Fenstanton, Needingworth and Holywell. Several of these villages have conservation areas managed by Huntingdonshire District Council, so check with the council first if your home is inside one. Our survey, fabrication and fitting process is the same as in St Ives itself.
How long will I wait for new windows in St Ives?
Aluminium windows have lead times from 10 days after the order is confirmed. Because our team travels roughly 90 miles from Fifield, we agree installation dates well ahead and plan the visit around the journey. The quote will set out the expected timescale so you can plan around it.
