Rushden’s houses, from shoe-trade terraces to the A6 estates
Rushden was built on boot and shoemaking. Well over a hundred factories were working in the mid-twentieth century, and only a handful of shoe firms remain. That history is still easy to read in the streets east of the centre, around York Road and Park Road, where late Victorian houses in red and orange brick went up alongside factory buildings in the 1880s and 1890s. Stone sills, segmental brick arches and narrow openings are typical, and they deserve windows that don’t swamp the brickwork with chunky frames.
Several old factories have been converted into flats. Those buildings bring their own glazing questions: tall industrial openings, a freeholder or management company to consult, and a need for every flat to look consistent from the street.
Beyond the Victorian core are twentieth-century semis and later estates, and the town is set to grow again. North Northamptonshire Council has identified land east of the A6 bypass for the Rushden East urban extension of around 2,700 homes. Newer houses usually need less change at the front, but they are often where owners widen the back of the house with sliding or bifold doors.
Planning: Rushden and Higham Ferrers conservation areas
Rushden’s conservation area is compact, roughly 18.6 hectares, centred on the Grade I Church of St Mary and including several listed buildings. Neighbouring Higham Ferrers has its own conservation area. If your home is inside either boundary, or is listed, check with North Northamptonshire Council before choosing replacement windows; the council publishes an online map of the boundaries. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows sets out the general position. Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, so converted factory flats need their own approach.
Which windows and doors suit which Rushden homes
- Victorian brick terraces: slim-framed aluminium windows such as Reynaers SlimLine 68, an outward-opening casement with a narrow profile, keep openings looking light against red brick. UPVC windows are the lower-cost alternative.
- Front doors: a composite door suits most terraced and semi-detached frontages, with woodgrain finishes if you liked the look of the old wooden door. We do not make timber doors.
- Semis and newer estates: Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors or Smart Visofold and Cortizo aluminium bifold doors for the garden side.
- Extra space: conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns.
Distance from Fifield and how we plan a Rushden job
Rushden is about 55 miles from our workshop in a straight line and roughly 75 miles by road, typically an hour and a half or more each way via the M25 and M1, depending on traffic. There is no Inspired Glazing office or showroom in Northamptonshire; the team travels from Fifield. Because of that, we book Rushden surveys and installations in advance and group the work so fitting days run efficiently.
- Enquiry: send photos and rough sizes through our quote form, or by WhatsApp on 07934 152 343, for an initial idea of cost.
- Survey: we measure each opening, check the brickwork and reveals, and show you frame colours and finishes.
- Manufacture: aluminium frames are made in our Fifield workshop, with lead times from 10 days.
- Installation: our own fitters install on the agreed dates, and the work carries a 10-year guarantee.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have a showroom near Rushden?
No. Our only base is the workshop at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 75 miles from Rushden by road. The team travels from there for every survey and installation, and we plan Rushden appointments in advance so the drive is built into the schedule. We bring frame samples and finishes to the survey at your home.
Do I need planning permission for new windows in the Rushden conservation area?
It depends on the property. Rushden's conservation area is centred on St Mary's Church, and listed buildings and flats carry extra controls. If you are inside the boundary, check with North Northamptonshire Council before ordering. Outside it, like-for-like replacement windows on a house are usually permitted development, but always confirm for your own home.
Can you replace windows in a converted shoe factory flat?
Often, yes. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so planning permission may be needed, and the freeholder or management company usually has to agree the design. Tall factory openings often suit slim aluminium frames such as Reynaers SlimLine 68. Once you have the building's requirements in writing, we can survey and quote.
How long does it take from order to fitting?
Our aluminium windows are made in our own Fifield workshop, with lead times from 10 days. For Rushden we also allow time to schedule the installation around the journey, so we agree a fitting date with you when you order rather than squeezing it in at short notice. Larger jobs may run over consecutive days.
Is aluminium or UPVC better for a Victorian terrace in Rushden?
Both work well. Aluminium gives slimmer frames and more glass, which suits the proportions of red brick terraces, with windows from £400. UPVC on the Selecta Advance 70 system is usually the lower-cost option. We bring samples of each to the survey so you can compare them against your own brickwork before deciding.
