Inspired Glazing surveys, makes and installs with its own team. Hatfield is really two towns side by side, an old estate village at the gates of Hatfield House and a post-war New Town, and each calls for a different approach.

Old Hatfield and the New Town

Old Hatfield grew around the gates of Hatfield House, the Cecil family seat, with the Old Palace of 1497 and St Etheldreda’s Church at its heart. Its streets form the Old Hatfield conservation area, managed by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council.

When Hatfield was designated under the New Towns Act 1946, planners chose not to build the new centre around the old village, judging it to be on the wrong side of the railway and too intimate in scale. Instead the town centre went up along St Albans Road, and much of Hatfield’s 1950s modernist housing and architecture survives. These post-war homes typically have large, simple window openings that suit a clean modern replacement.

The de Havilland aircraft factory, which built the Mosquito and the Comet, was the town’s biggest employer until British Aerospace closed the site in 1993. The former airfield has since been redeveloped for housing, business and the University of Hertfordshire’s de Havilland Campus, so Hatfield also has a large stock of newer homes and student lets.

Planning in Welwyn Hatfield

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council is the planning authority. If your home is in Old Hatfield, is listed, or is a flat, check with the council before replacing windows. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, and leaseholders usually need freeholder consent too. Landlords with properties near the university should also check any terms in their leases. Our guide to replacement windows and planning gives the general picture.

Road noise and the A1(M)

The A1(M) runs through Hatfield in a tunnel, and the M25 is close to the south of the town. If you live near a busy road, mention it at the survey so we can talk through glass options for your windows and doors.

Our range for Hatfield properties

  1. Post-war New Town houses: UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system for good value, or Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium windows, an outward-opening casement with slim frames, for a sharper modern look.
  2. Old Hatfield cottages: where the council allows replacement, slim aluminium or woodgrain UPVC; where it does not, secondary glazing. Timber windows and doors are not something we make.
  3. Newer homes on the former aerodrome: often already double glazed, so the usual upgrade is a Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding door or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors.
  4. Front doors: composite doors in many colours and woodgrain effects.
  5. More space: conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace windows in Old Hatfield?

Old Hatfield is a conservation area with several listed buildings, so extra controls can apply. Check with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council before ordering. Where replacement is allowed, slim aluminium or woodgrain UPVC may be suitable. Where it is not, secondary glazing improves comfort without altering the original windows. We do not make timber windows.

Do you work with landlords near the University of Hertfordshire?

Yes. We replace windows and doors in rented houses and flats around Hatfield. For flats, landlords need freeholder consent and possibly planning permission, as flats have no householder permitted development rights. UPVC on the Selecta Advance 70 system is a common choice for rentals, with composite front doors for security and low maintenance.

What windows suit a 1950s Hatfield New Town house?

These houses often have large, simple openings, which suit either UPVC or aluminium. Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium windows give slimmer frames and more glass, from £400 each, while UPVC usually costs less. We bring samples of both to the survey so you can compare them in your own openings before deciding.

How far do you travel to Hatfield?

Our only base is our workshop at Fifield, near Windsor. Hatfield is roughly 38 miles away by road, around 50 minutes via the M25. The same team handles your survey and installation, so the people who measure are the people who fit. We do not have a local showroom, but we bring samples.

How soon can new windows be fitted in Hatfield?

Once you have approved the survey and quote, aluminium windows are made in our own workshop with lead times from 10 days. Fitting dates are then fixed together with you. UPVC, composite doors and conservatories have their own timescales, which we confirm in writing with your quote so you can plan around the work.
