Haverhill’s homes: weaving town to expansion town
A great fire in 1667 destroyed most of Haverhill’s older buildings, so only a few medieval structures survive. The town you see today owes much to the Gurteen family, whose weaving business expanded through the nineteenth century; Chauntry Mill was built in the 1850s and 1860s and, by the end of that century, most residents worked for the firm in some way. Red-brick terraces with slate roofs, often with sash windows, date from that period.
From the late 1950s, Haverhill was chosen for planned expansion to take people and jobs out of London, with the aim of roughly tripling a population of around 5,400. Large estates followed, and building has carried on since, with rapid growth on the western edge absorbing the hamlet of Hanchet End. As a result, a large share of Haverhill homes date from the 1960s to the present, with plenty of first- and second-generation double glazing ready for replacement.
Queen Street conservation area
West Suffolk Council is the planning authority. Its appraisal for the Queen Street conservation area covers the town centre and nearby residential streets such as Broad Street, Withersfield Road, Mill Road and Chauntry Road. The appraisal identifies original sashes as a key feature and notes that many have been replaced with unsuitable alternatives that break up the rhythm of the terraces. If your home is in the conservation area or is listed, check with West Suffolk Council before changing windows or doors, particularly on the front elevation. The appraisal also highlights red brick, slate, render and contrasting brick bands as part of the local character, so frame colour and glazing pattern matter as much as the material you choose. Our planning guide gives the general rules.
Products that suit the town
Expansion-era estates
For the many 1960s and 1970s houses, UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system offer a good balance of cost and performance. Owners who want slimmer frames and a more modern look often choose aluminium windows from Cortizo or Alunet.
Victorian terraces
The Reynaers SlimLine 68 is an outward-opening casement with slim sightlines. Where the council accepts it, it can sit neatly in a brick opening. We do not make timber windows; woodgrain finishes are our timber-look option.
Newer homes on the west side
Recent houses often have room to open up the back with Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold doors or Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, along with composite front doors and conservatories or orangeries.
More than windows
Homes from Haverhill’s expansion years often reach the point where several exterior parts need work at once. Alongside windows and doors, we fit garage doors, porches, fascias, soffits and guttering, so the whole front of the house can be refreshed in one planned visit. Inside, we can supply blinds and shutters. For older terraced houses where the frames must stay, secondary glazing is another way to cut draughts and road noise.
Getting to Haverhill
There is no Inspired Glazing office in Suffolk. Our only base is the Fifield workshop, roughly 85 miles by road, usually around an hour and three-quarters via the M25 and M11. Because Haverhill is well over 50 miles away, we plan surveys and installations in advance around the journey, and our fitters arrive with everything needed to complete the work.
Your survey is free and comes with a written quote. Aluminium windows start from £400, lead times start from around 10 days, and installations are covered by a 10-year guarantee. Our cost guide explains what affects price.
Surrounding villages
We cover Haverhill, Hanchet End, Withersfield, Kedington, Great Wratting, Steeple Bumpstead and Sturmer, and nearby towns including Saffron Walden, Sudbury and Cambridge.

Frequently asked questions
Is my Haverhill house in a conservation area?
If you live in or near the town centre, it may be. West Suffolk Council's Queen Street conservation area covers the shopping streets plus residential roads such as Broad Street, Withersfield Road, Mill Road and Chauntry Road. Check the council's map or contact West Suffolk Council before changing windows, especially on front elevations.
What windows suit a 1960s Haverhill estate house?
Many owners consider UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system, which are cost-effective, low maintenance and available in white or woodgrain colours. If you want slimmer frames, Cortizo or Alunet aluminium windows give a cleaner look. Our surveyor will measure every opening and price both options for you.
How far is Haverhill from your workshop?
Haverhill is roughly 85 miles by road from our Fifield workshop near Windsor, usually around an hour and three-quarters via the M25 and M11. We have no Suffolk branch, so we plan surveys and installations ahead and schedule the fitting days carefully, so the work is completed without repeated journeys.
Do you fit bifold doors in Haverhill?
Yes. We install Smart Visofold and Cortizo aluminium bifold doors, and Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors as an alternative. Bifolds open the whole width, while sliders keep more glass and slimmer frames. Our surveyor will explain the differences and check whether the opening needs structural work before quoting.
What guarantee do you offer in Haverhill?
Our windows and doors come with a 10-year guarantee. We fabricate our aluminium frames in our own workshop and our own team installs them, so we are responsible for both the product and the fitting. The terms are set out in writing with your quote before you agree to anything.
