A railway town that kept on growing

Swindon has two historic hearts. Old Town is the original market settlement on top of the hill, while the new town grew up below it after the Great Western Railway built its works in 1841 to 1842. The GWR built a railway village for its workers, and those cottages are now Grade II listed. The two halves merged in 1900, and the new town’s streets spread out around the railway in districts such as Rodbourne, Gorse Hill and Eastcott.

After the Second World War Swindon took in London overspill and became one of the fastest-growing towns in Europe. West Swindon was built from the 1970s onwards, with Toothill receiving its first residents in 1976, and Freshbrook, Shaw and Westlea following. The Northern Expansion then added Abbey Meads, St Andrew’s Ridge and finally Priory Vale, begun in 2001, and Wichelstowe is still taking shape to the south. That spread means a Swindon window job can be anything from a listed railway cottage to a 1980s semi with failed sealed units or a newer house wanting wider doors to the garden.

Planning in Swindon: the Railway Village is different

Swindon Borough Council is the planning authority. It lists 27 conservation areas, including Swindon Old Town, Old Town Devizes Road, Prospect Place, Town Gardens, the Swindon railway conservation area, Rodbourne Cheney, Lower Stratton, Kingsdown, Highworth and Wroughton. The council also has an Article 4 Direction for the Swindon railway village, which removes some permitted development rights, so changing windows or doors there is likely to need consent. If you live in a listed building, a conservation area or a flat, check with Swindon Borough Council before ordering. Flats have no householder permitted development rights. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows explains the basics.

Which windows and doors suit which Swindon homes

Older houses in Old Town and the new town

Narrow fronts and modest openings suit slim sightlines. Our aluminium windows, led by the outward-opening Reynaers SlimLine 68 casement, keep frames thin so more glass shows. Cortizo and Alunet aluminium ranges give alternative styles and price points.

West Swindon and post-war estates

Many 1970s and 1980s houses already have UPVC windows that are now well past their best. A like-for-like swap into our UPVC windows and doors, made in the Selecta Advance 70 system, is usually the simplest route, with a composite front door to match. We do not make timber windows or doors; woodgrain-finish UPVC or aluminium, or a composite door, gives a timber look.

Northern Expansion and newer homes

Newer houses often have room at the back for a bigger opening. We fit Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding patio doors and Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold doors, and build conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns.

How a Swindon job runs from Fifield

  1. Survey. We book a date, measure every opening and bring frame colour and hardware samples, since there is no showroom to visit.
  2. Quote. Aluminium windows start from £400. The double glazing cost guide sets out what drives a whole-house price.
  3. Making. Aluminium frames are fabricated in our Fifield workshop, with lead times from 10 days.
  4. Fitting. Our own installers arrive early, take out the old frames, fit and seal the new ones and clear away the waste.

Installations come with a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and hold Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need permission to replace windows in Swindon's Railway Village?

Very likely. Swindon Borough Council has an Article 4 Direction for the Swindon railway village, which removes some permitted development rights, and the cottages are Grade II listed. Check with the council before ordering anything. We can survey and quote so you have drawings and specifications ready to support any application.

How far do you travel to reach Swindon?

Our workshop is at Fifield, near Windsor. Swindon is roughly 55 miles by road along the M4, usually around an hour's drive. We have no local office, so we book surveys and fitting days in advance and our own team travels over. The same company that measures your windows makes and fits them.

What is the best replacement for 1980s windows in West Swindon?

For most 1970s and 1980s houses a straight swap into modern UPVC windows is the simplest and most affordable choice, and we use the Selecta Advance 70 system. If you prefer slimmer frames, aluminium windows from £400 are an alternative. We will compare both at the survey and quote for whichever suits.

Can you fit bifold or sliding doors on a newer Swindon estate house?

Yes. We fit Smart Visofold and Cortizo aluminium bifolds, and Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors. On many newer homes this replaces an existing pair of French doors or a window. We check the lintel, floor level and garden access at survey before recommending a size and configuration.

How long does it take to get new windows in Swindon?

Lead times for aluminium windows start from 10 days after the order is confirmed, because we fabricate them in our own Fifield workshop. Fitting day is then booked around the journey to Swindon. Most houses are fitted in one or two days, depending on the number of openings.
