An old Wealden town that grew after the war
Uckfield is an ancient settlement, first recorded in 1220 and once a stop on the pilgrims’ route between Canterbury, Chichester and Lewes. Bridge Cottage, dating from about 1436, is the oldest house still standing. For most of its history it stayed small: in 1931 the population was around 3,500. The real growth came after the Second World War, with estates at Hempstead Fields, Harlands Farm, Rocks Park, West Park, Manor Park and Ringles Cross taking the town past 15,000 people by 2021. More recently, the large Ridgewood Farm scheme to the south has added new homes again.
The result is a town where most houses are post-war and many are on their second generation of double glazing, with a small historic core of much older buildings along the High Street.
That pattern shapes what we are usually asked to do. On the estates, the job is typically a whole-house replacement of frames fitted in the 1980s or 1990s, often with a new front door at the same time. In the older streets, owners are more concerned with keeping slim proportions and the right colour. And on the newest homes, the windows are fine, but the plain patio door at the back is the part people want to change.
Choosing windows and doors for Uckfield homes
Post-war estates. For houses at Manor Park, Harlands or Rocks Park, UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system give good insulation at a sensible price, in white, greys or woodgrain foils.
Older and character houses. Our aluminium windows are led by the Reynaers SlimLine 68, an outward-opening casement with slim sightlines, and we also make Cortizo and Alunet ranges. We do not make timber windows or doors, so for listed buildings needing timber we will say so up front.
Garden openings. Many Uckfield houses sit on sloping plots with views out over the Weald. Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifolds or Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors make the most of them.
Entrances and extra space. Composite doors for the front, and conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns where you need more room.
Flood history in the town centre
The River Uck runs through the bottom of the town, and the low-lying centre and industrial estate have flooded repeatedly, with notable floods in 1989, 1994, 2000 and 2007. Most residential streets sit on higher ground and are not affected. If your home is near the river, mention it at survey: it affects how we detail thresholds and drainage on ground-floor doors.
Uckfield’s conservation area and Wealden planning
Wealden District Council is the planning authority. Uckfield has a compact conservation area of around nine hectares covering the historic part of the town, designated in 1968. If you are in it, in a listed building, or in a flat, check with Wealden District Council before changing windows. Flats lack householder permitted development rights, so permission and freeholder consent may both be needed. North of the town, Ashdown Forest and much of the surrounding countryside fall within the High Weald National Landscape. Our planning permission guide for replacement windows covers the usual rules.

Frequently asked questions
Do you cover Ridgewood and the new homes south of Uckfield?
Yes. We travel from Fifield to Ridgewood and the newer developments south of the town, as well as Maresfield, Buxted, Framfield, Isfield and Piltdown. Owners of recent houses usually ask us about bifold or sliding doors rather than windows, and we can survey for those on the same visit as any window work.
Is the Uckfield conservation area strict about window changes?
Rules depend on the building, so check with Wealden District Council before replacing windows on the front of a property in the conservation area, and always if it is listed. Once you know what the council expects, we can advise whether slim aluminium or woodgrain UPVC is likely to be acceptable.
How do you handle the distance to Uckfield?
Uckfield is roughly 70 miles from our Fifield workshop, about an hour and a half by road. We plan surveys on days we are already in East Sussex, make the frames ourselves, and schedule fitting on consecutive days so the job is finished without repeated trips. You deal with the same team throughout.
Should I replace UPVC windows on a 1970s Uckfield house?
If they are original or early replacements with misted units, dropped sashes or draughts, replacement usually improves comfort noticeably. UPVC in the Selecta Advance 70 system is the cost-effective choice, while aluminium gives slimmer frames and more colour options. We will tell you honestly at survey if your frames have life left.
Can new doors be fitted on a house near the River Uck?
Yes. Where a home is near the river or has flooded before, we take extra care with threshold heights, drainage and sealing at the base of patio, bifold and back doors. Let us know about any past flooding when you book, so we can plan the detail before the doors are made.
