How New Milton came to be
Unusually, New Milton is a railway town. The station opened in March 1888, and the town grew quickly around it; the name itself comes from a sub post office opposite the station, signed “New Milton” in 1895 to tell it apart from the one in the original village, now called Old Milton. The orange-red brick water tower on Osborne Road, built in 1900 with battlements and a turret, is the landmark of that first period of growth.
The housing is layered accordingly. Late Victorian and Edwardian houses sit near the station and the town centre. Ashley, to the east, grew from an old hamlet into a suburb with its own shops and schools. From the 1960s farmland around the town was built over for commuter housing, which accounts for many of the semis, chalet bungalows and detached homes on today’s estates, and towards the edges there are older cottages too.
Barton on Sea and the cliff top
Barton on Sea, part of the same parish, mostly took its present shape after land sales between 1904 and 1907. It stands on cliffs around 34 metres high, and those cliffs have retreated by up to a metre a year in places, with several buildings lost over the past century. Barton is also a popular place to retire, with large numbers of bungalows and purpose-built apartments facing the sea.
For windows, the main issue here is exposure. Cliff-top homes take the full force of wind and salt spray off Christchurch Bay, so the quality of the seals and the fixing matters as much as the frames. Keep drainage slots clear and rinse frames and handles with fresh water now and then.
Planning in New Milton
New Forest District Council is the planning authority for New Milton. Its conservation areas include Old Milton Green, and nearby Milford-on-Sea has its own. Homes north of the town that fall inside the New Forest National Park come under the New Forest National Park Authority. If your property is listed, in a conservation area, inside the National Park or a flat, check with the relevant authority before ordering. Flats, including Barton’s seafront apartments, have no householder permitted development rights, so new windows need consent and the agreement of the freeholder or management company. Our planning guide for replacement windows explains the general rules.
Our products for New Milton homes
- Bungalows and chalet bungalows: UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system are a sensible, cost-effective upgrade, available in white, colours and woodgrain.
- Edwardian and character houses: our aluminium windows include the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement, with slim frames, and Cortizo and Alunet systems. We do not make timber windows or doors; woodgrain UPVC is our timber-look option.
- Sea-facing rooms: Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors suit wide views without doors swinging out into the wind, while Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds work well onto sheltered gardens.
- Front doors and extra space: composite doors need little maintenance by the coast, and we build conservatories and orangeries, porches and roof lanterns.
Local areas we cover
Our New Milton work takes in Barton on Sea, Ashley, Old Milton, Bashley, Becton and Hordle. Neighbouring pages cover Christchurch, Lymington and Bournemouth.
What to expect from us
It starts with a free survey on a date when our surveyor is working along the coast. We measure every opening, look at exposure and access, and agree styles and colours. Then comes a written quote; aluminium windows start from Β£400, and our double glazing cost guide shows what affects the figure. The aluminium frames are made in our own workshop, with lead times from 10 days. Fitting is booked as a run of consecutive days, and our own fitters bring the full order, replace the old frames, seal everything properly and clear up.
Each installation carries our 10-year guarantee. We are listed by Reynaers as a Reynaers at Home installer partner and hold Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have a local office in New Milton?
No. Our only base is our workshop and office at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor. New Milton is roughly 90 miles away by road, around an hour and fifty minutes' drive. Our own team travels from Fifield, and we plan surveys and installations in advance, grouping the fitting into consecutive days.
What windows suit a cliff-top bungalow in Barton on Sea?
Exposure is the main concern, so installation quality matters most. UPVC in the Selecta Advance 70 system is the usual cost-effective choice for bungalows, while the Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium casement gives slimmer, rigid frames. Either way, careful sealing, clear drainage and an occasional freshwater rinse help them cope with salt and wind.
Can I change the windows in my Barton seafront apartment?
Usually only with consent. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so replacement windows normally need planning permission from New Forest District Council. Your lease is also likely to require approval from the freeholder or management company, who may specify a style. Once that is arranged, we can survey and quote.
Do I need planning permission for new windows in Old Milton?
Most houses can replace windows under permitted development, but Old Milton Green is a conservation area where extra controls may apply, and listed buildings always need consent. Homes inside the New Forest National Park fall under the National Park Authority. Check with the relevant authority for your address before ordering.
Are sliding doors or bifolds better facing the sea?
On a windy, sea-facing elevation, Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors are often easier to live with because the panels slide rather than fold out into the wind. Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds suit more sheltered gardens where you want the full opening. We look at the exposure at survey and advise honestly.
