Double glazing in Sheerness and on the Isle of Sheppey has to deal with something inland homes do not: salt-laden wind off the Thames Estuary and the North Sea. Inspired Glazing makes aluminium windows and doors in its own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, and supplies UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories, all installed by our own team. Sheppey is roughly 90 miles from us by road, usually around an hour and three quarters to two hours over the Sheppey Crossing, so we plan island surveys and installations well in advance.

An island of dockyard streets and seaside terraces
Sheerness grew around the Royal Naval Dockyard, founded in 1669 after the Dutch raid on the Medway. Blue Town, beside the yard, took its name from the naval paint used on early workers’ houses. Once that ground was full, Mile Town developed about a mile away and became the heart of the modern town, and Marine Town grew to the east with terraced streets near the seafront. Much of the housing is Victorian terraced stock, often with small front gardens or opening straight onto the pavement.
Elsewhere the island is varied. Minster, now the largest town on Sheppey, has a large share of twentieth-century and newer housing. Halfway sits between them. Queenborough is a small historic port with its own character, Eastchurch is a village in the middle of the island, and Leysdown on the east coast is known for holiday parks and chalets as well as permanent homes.
Salt air, wind and what it means for frames
Coastal exposure affects every product. Hardware, hinges and finishes take more punishment near the sea, and wind-driven rain finds any weakness in sealing. On exposed elevations we pay particular attention to drainage, seals and fixings, and we will talk through finish and maintenance with you. Simple care, such as rinsing salt from frames and tracks a few times a year, makes a real difference on Sheppey. The island also has a long memory of flooding: the 1953 North Sea flood swamped the dockyard and the town centre.
Wind also affects how doors behave. A large door on the seaward side of a house sees far more load than the same door facing a sheltered garden, so we think about opening direction, threshold detail and the type of door before recommending bifolds or sliders. Sometimes a composite door with a porch in front of it is the more sensible answer on an exposed elevation, and we will say so.
Planning on Sheppey
Swale Borough Council is the planning authority. Sheerness has three conservation areas: Sheerness Royal Naval Dockyard and Bluetown, Sheerness Mile Town and Sheerness Marine Town, and Swale enlarged Mile Town and Marine Town in 2024, adding the rest of Alma Street among others. Queenborough has its own conservation area. An Article 4 direction covers front elevation alterations, including porches, at 43 to 72 Marine Parade, and another applies to a property in Minster. If you are in any of these areas, check with Swale Borough Council before you order. Flats have no householder permitted development rights. Our planning permission guide explains the general rules.
What we would fit on Sheppey
- Exposed seafront homes: aluminium windows such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 casement, or Cortizo and Alunet, give rigid frames for wide, windy openings.
- Terraces in Mile Town and Marine Town: UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system, including woodgrain finishes, with a composite front door. We do not make timber.
- Garden and sea views: Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds, or Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors.
- Extra space and shelter: porches, which make a lot of sense in an exposed spot, plus conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns.

Survey, make, fit
We book your free survey on a planned Sheppey day, measure and assess exposure, then send a written quote. Aluminium windows start from £400; our double glazing cost guide explains the rest. Aluminium frames are fabricated at Fifield, with lead times from 10 days, and installations are scheduled as consecutive days so our fitters complete the work in one trip. All work is covered by a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner with Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions
Are aluminium windows a good idea near the sea at Sheerness?
They can be. Aluminium frames are rigid and stable, and suit wide openings facing the estuary. Salt air is hard on any frame or hardware, so regular rinsing and occasional cleaning of tracks and hinges is worth doing. We will talk through finishes and care for your specific exposure at the survey.
Do I need permission to change windows in Marine Town?
Marine Town is a conservation area, enlarged by Swale Borough Council in 2024, and an Article 4 direction covers front elevation alterations, including porches, at 43 to 72 Marine Parade. Check with Swale Borough Council before you order. Elsewhere on the island, ordinary houses often fall under permitted development.
Will you travel to Leysdown or Eastchurch?
Yes. We cover the whole island, including Minster, Halfway, Queenborough, Eastchurch and Leysdown. Our team travels from Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 90 miles away by road. We plan surveys and installations ahead of time, so you get a fixed date rather than a vague promise.
Can you fit a porch on an exposed Sheppey house?
Yes, we design and build porches in UPVC or aluminium with composite or glazed doors. On a windy coastal site a porch adds a useful buffer against weather at the front door. Check with Swale Borough Council if you are in a conservation area or covered by an Article 4 direction.
What is the cost of double glazing on the Isle of Sheppey?
Our aluminium windows start from £400 per window, and UPVC in the Selecta Advance 70 system usually costs less. Size, style, glass and colour all affect the final figure. We give a written, itemised quote after a free survey, with no obligation to go ahead.
